Future of VoIP

When it comes to VoIP technology for corporations, small businesses, and individuals, long-distance phone calls, conferencing, e-mail, and other communications needs are now affordable and flexible. The future of VoIP technology is looking very promising as new dimensions are being explored and enhancements offered to customers.
When VoIP technology was first developed, many people were skeptical, mainly because it sounded too good to be true. However, as time has passed and this technology has proven itself time after time, these same people are now realizing that the future of VoIP technology is indeed solid and are switching over from their legacy systems.
Already VoIP technology has made advancements that are catching business owners’ interest. In addition to making long-distance calls all around the world for little to no money, this technology is always on the move, introducing new features. For example, once considered a future aspect of VoIP technology, SIP has now come to fruition.
Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) retrieves server responses and handles client requests. This technology is able to determine the end system that will be used for a communication session, automatically sets the appropriate parameters at both ends of the communication, and then manages both call transfer and call termination. Additionally, SIP allows users to initiate and receive communication from any location. It allows networks to identify the user, regardless of where they are. This technology is an alternative to H.323, which is the protocol, used for IP videoconference transmissions used for the past eight years.
SIP has taken the future of VoIP technology to a new level and in the spring of 2004, several companies will be showcasing SIP-based products in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the Networld+Interop Conference. Many of the VoIP technology heavyweights such as Microsoft and Cisco are including SIP in their standard offerings, giving this new enhancement the boost it needed.
In addition to SIP, the future of VoIP technology looks bright for other reasons. For instance, Cisco has recently unveiled a new VoIP telephone that offers a color and touch screen. In addition to the phone being easier to use, it provides a completely new level of VoIP technology for both small and large businesses. Cisco’s revolutionary features currently cost $1,000 and are available on the Cisco 7970G although you can be sure that other companies will soon follow.
Without a doubt, when it comes to the future of VoIP technology, Cisco is on the leading edge. For more than four years, Cisco has been dominant in the world of VoIP, and to date, has sold more than two million VoIP capable handsets. That is, far more than all other companies combined. However, other companies such as Avaya are stepping up to get a piece of the VoIP market.
With the current offering of VoIP technology of little to no long-distance phone bills coupled with the exciting future of VoIP technology, regardless of your company size, you definitely want to look into the opportunities available.
