Editorial Review

An award-winning provider of business and residential VoIP services, Ooma aims to deliver an exceptional calling experience with its cloud-based smart telephony system that surpasses ordinary phone service. At the heart of Ooma’s effort to redefine the home phone service landscape is Ooma Telo, a simple plug-and-play solution that enables residential users with a high-speed Internet connection to access affordable VoIP phone services. With Ooma Telo’s advanced hardware and software components and cloud services, residential users can ensure that every phone call is crystal clear, even under less than optimal Internet connections.

The provider also offers Ooma Office, an enterprise-grade phone service for small businesses. Aside from cloud-based telephony, Ooma also offers Internet security, office security, and other connected services at a fraction of the cost.

Cutting-edge Hardware and Software

Ooma Telo is specifically designed to allow residential users to experience superior home phone telephony service at a cost they can afford. Built with cutting-edge hardware, the Ooma Telo device seamlessly fits with a customer’s home network setup. In fact, the device’s advanced software technology is 20 times more powerful than the industry standard, which speaks to the service’s overall performance.

As a smart cloud-based communications platform, Ooma offers a lineup of innovative products and services including Bluetooth support, mobile phone calling with an iPhone or iPod touch, Google Voice Extensions, Ooma PureVoice, High Definition (HD) Voice, and voicemail transcription.

High Definition Voice Technology

Ooma is the first residential phone service provider that supports high-definition voice technology. With their HD Voice technology, Ooma Telo essentially doubles the audio frequencies transmitted during the call to deliver clearer, richer, and more natural sounding audio. Equipped with PureVoice HD technology, Ooma Telo ensures all calls are clear and reliable even under extreme conditions. Plus, this cutting-edge phone solution uses an advanced voice compression algorithm that lessens bandwidth by up to 60 percent when compared to standard VoIP technology.

Affordable Calling Plans

Ooma Telo is an innovative communication tool that provides free and low-cost calls to the US and Canada in addition to advanced cloud-based telephony services to its global customer base. This affordable cloud-based phone system offers two options for international calling: Standard Rate and Plan Rate. With the Ooma Telo Plan Rate option, users can use up to 1,000 minutes of international calling for under $10 per month. On the other hand, Ooma Telo’s Standard Rate offers no monthly fee, and most calls to 61 countries are typically lower than 1¢ per minute. With the Ooma Telo phone system, users will pay only basic fees and taxes as required by law. These vary by location due to state tax rates, but generally the cost may run between $3 and $4 per month. (To know exactly what the monthly Ooma Telo obligation would be in your region, you can input your zip code on the Ooma website.)

When making international calls with Ooma Telo, users have the option to pay as they go (on a per-minute basis) or they can choose to subscribe to the Ooma World Plan for unlimited calling to over 60 countries for only $17.99 a month. Customers also have the option to select the Ooma World Plan Plus and start calling to over 70 countries for only $25.99 per month. The Ooma Telo Premier service tier expands on the features that are provided in the Basic tier, giving residential users up to 25 additional premium calling features, all for a monthly price of $9.99. Ooma Telo Premier subscribers can enjoy the benefits of call blocking, a second phone number, instant second line, multi-ring, 3-way conference calling, voicemail forwarding, and more.

I have an Ooma Telo with a residential line and an office line. Voice quality is good, and the service has been reliable. However, the customer service is poor. I recently purchased from Ooma a WiFi/Bluetooth adapter to connect my Telo wirelessly. The instructions have a link to click to set up, however the link was broken. I tried the chat service twice but no luck. Then I went to the phone lines. No luck with the first level of customer support and no luck with the second level of support. The third level of customer support was supposed to call back Tuesday. I waited four days but no call back. I called back in. The third level referred me to the fourth level which was supposed to be engineering. After three hours, the third level called back (customers can't speak to engineering). The engineer had solve the problem: my home network name had "spaces" in it!!! What does this indicate? Poor website instructions, poor paper instructions with the product, poorly informed product support at levels one, two, and three, and poor internal communications from engineering. Eric B. Stang, the Ooma CEO, received 2.7 million dollars in total compensation last year. For this level of performance, I'd say he was overpaid by about 2.6 million dollars.

Voice quality good, reliable service.
Untrained customer support. Failure to call back when promised. Poor website installation instructions. Poor printed installation instructions.

Ooma has very shoddy business practices. There are many other companies to choose from that provide much better service!

Ooma quoted me a monthly price for their home service of only taxes and fees once I bought the actual device to get things up and running. The device is a one time charge of $99.00 Since purchasing the device/unit, I have been charged over $10 per month when I was told I would be charged only taxes and fees per month. Those taxes and fees come in at right under $5.00 per month, yet I'm being charged over $10 per month. Ooma has not been helpful at all in getting this issue worked out. Now, I'm stuck with a $99.99 device and charges of double what I was quoted per month. Do not use Ooma. Terrible company. Horrible customer service. Impossible to get a hold of and also rude once you do! Stay away!

This seems like a good deal and sometimes a good deal is not worth it. We
were promised there would be a seamless switch to Ooma service. That was not
the case, our phones did not ring for almost 2 days. We depend on clients to
keep going. This was awful decision on my behalf. Now trying to get my money
back has been a huge hassle. Don't do it!

Ooma has saved us $1600 since we started using the residential service in
2013. The service came highly recommended from a collegue and now I highly
recommend it to others as well. This service allows you to use all your
existing phones in the house, or they have their own handsets with a few
bells and whistles.

I also use the Bluetooth service so that my cell phone can remain upstairs
while I work in my basement office. I just have a house phone next to me and
it rings a different ring pattern when it is a cellular call coming in.
Great feature!

The dashboard is great as well. Lots of choices and info. Overall just very
happy with the product !

My wife and I use their premium service during election years so that we can
use the blacklist service. It works wonders with all those annoying
political calls!

Premium services are beneficial, $4 monthly bill, use existing phones in home, ways to integrate your cell phone into the mix
They need better customer support. The HD2 handsets are disappointing as well, I much prefer "regular" phones. Hopefully they come out with a killer HD3 soon.

I am one of those people who needs to have the peace of mind of having a landline at home. Even though our entire family has cell phones, I like knowing we have a landline in case we need it. Ooma was a great choice for us as it was simple and easy to set up, and the monthly fee is so small we hardly notice it. Definitely recommend it for home use.

I am a little bit old-fashioned in that I like to have landline phone service at home, and not rely completely on my cell phone. With cell phones getting as popular as they are, it makes less and less sense to keep paying monthly for residential phone service. Having found Ooma, I no longer have to pay for monthly phone service now that I have purchased the device. I would recommend Ooma to anyone who just wants to pay once and then have free phone service indefinitely.

essentially free phone service after you purchase the device
