VOIP QOS stands for Quality of Service over IP and being able to achieve this is much easier than it once was. Although advancements have been made with VOIP QOS, in depth research is still needed, specifically in regards to authorization.
VOIP QOS focuses on the quality in which data and voice are sent over the Internet. Additionally VOIP QOS is about the assurance that low delay and Jitter over IP when it is being used heavily. This means that VOIP is given priority over other types of traffic and that when QOS is not at its peak performance, or not working altogether, the VOIP is stopped so that it does not travel over a faulty link.
You will find that to support VOIP QOS, there is an application called VOIPMonitor, which will shut down certain portions of the VOIP network anytime the QOS begins to fail. Whenever VOIP starts to deteriorate, the VOIPMonitor will trigger the VOIP network so that no more VOIP calls are sent to the destination where the problem resides.
Additionally working with VOIP QOS is an ITU-T G.113 standard for measuring quality known as ICPIF. This particular solution has replaced the old Quantization Distortion Unit (QDU) that was very subjective. What happens is that Cisco gateways will generate the ICPIF values for every VOIP call. The calculations are then stored for the call record that resided in the AARNet Billing System.
