Residential VoIP providers have very similar service. The main differences between VoIP providers are price, features, and customer service. Plans may vary in minutes and price but, in general, you have per-minute rate plans and flat-rate unlimited monthly plans.

Residential VoIP service has steadily increased since the early 2000s. Technology has improved to the point that, with a good Internet connection, a VoIP phone system can carry the same or better voice quality than traditional landlines.

Business VoIP Service Providers

Business VoIP is much more varied. You can pay for basic VoIP service or you can pay for a hosted PBX system in order to have professional communications management, especially with the standard auto attendant.

If you're a bigger business, you may want to provide your own IP PBX phone system with your own software and hardware.

A survey in summer 2011 by 8x8, a VoIP service provider, has indicated that small to medium businesses are really turning to VoIP phone systems. The study showed that businesses signed up for VoIP to reduce costs, get more features, and hand off hosting and maintenance of communications systems to another party.

If you're interested in business VoIP features, the list from many providers includes:

If you're looking to resell or become a service provider, wholesale VoIP is for you. Wholesale VoIP is a way that individuals can resell voice over IP services, and is a great way to enter the telecom business. Different providers can offer turn-key wholesale VoIP, direct inward dialing (DID) for call centers and calling card companies, collocation, toll-free numbers, and more.  Select wholesale VoIP providers even offer SMS and faxing options as well.
