magicJack Reviews

magicJack is an extremely cheap VoIP provider that works by using your existing Internet connection to make and receive calls. magicJack provides a plug-and-play device (like a USB drive) that you can connect to your computer or high-speed modem to start making local and long-distance calls. You can use magicJack for as little as $19.95/year per line.

With the newest magicJack Plus system, you don't have to have your computer on at all times in order to receive a call.

Is magicJack worth it?

We recommend that anyone interested in buying a magicJack read the user reviews here first.

I have used MagicJack since about 2010/11 and the functionality of the device and telephone calls has been exceptional. HOWEVER... I read other reviews here and realised that a major difference is that I have ONLY ONCE called customer service and sure enough my experience was similar to others... frustrating, no straightforward answers, trying to push an additional sale which I knew I didn't need. ***Top Tip*** If you decide to go ahead and purchase a device... do it through a 3rd party reseller (In Canada I use The Source) install it, activate and choose your plan ONLINE yourself. It's easy. Make a note of your plan's expiry date and add your own credit/years when needed. As you will read elsewhere contacting customer service will do nothing except leave you frustrated.

Crystal clear calls - even on international calls.

I recently renewed my magicjack subscription for another year ($45) and noticed the quality of the calls weren't so clear, after trying all their troubleshooting tips and speaking to technical support I inquired about their refund policy and was told they do not give refunds, next thing I know I get an email stating that my service was deactivated per my request when I never requested my service be deactivated especially since they don't give refunds I simply inquired about their refund policy, I called to resolve the matter thinking they would reactivate my service no problem since it was a misunderstanding on their part but that's not how it went, they (3 different reps including a supervisor) kept telling me that their records show I requested my service be deactivated because that's what their rep noted in the computer although I never requested deactivation, nobody would take responsibility for their (magicjack) mistake making it seem like I got what I asked for, so I'm out $45 because they don't give refunds and they just took it upon themselves to deactivate my service because I inquired about their refund policy, doesn't even make sense, clearly they didn't want to keep a customer, I'll gladly invest my money elsewhere, took my money and wouldn't reactivate my service that they deactivated in error (although they wouldn't own up to the error), you might be wondering why would I even want my service reactivated if the calls aren't clear because now I'm out $45, it's the principal of the matter I guess because they took my money and I didn't get what I paid for, unacceptable customer service!!

I've had MJ's for several years and they all ended in disappointment. When they worked, they were fine. But eventually a unit would inexplicably cease to work and when I finally got hold of Customer Support, they would tell me that my account was "under review"!! When I asked why, they could not give me an answer except to say that the review would be done quickly and service returned soon. IT NEVER HAPPENED. The line never came back to life and repeated calls to CS resulted in the same vague answer. Thinking maybe a new unit would get me back on track, I stupidly ordered another and eventually the same thing happened again! Based on the unexplained outages and the resultant lack of explanation and/or support, I WILL NEVER RECOMMEND MAGICJACK TO ANYONE. However, if there's someone out there that you hate, you might consider giving them one as an anonymous gift, as it will eventually cause them no end of anger and frustration. Otherwise, ***** DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF GARBAGE *****

Cheap
Unreliable, no customer support - basically worthless!

Magic Jack is ok as long as you don't need records from them to validate your payments nor you don't get caught up in one of their scams for extended payments for service. I renewwed last year the 4th of november. Well, the scam artists that I happend to be renewing my plan with did a great scam with me. He said if I renewed for 2 years he would send out a new unit to me. I explained to him several times I did not need a new unit, my unit worked just fine. He said no, no since I renewed on their special for 2 years this would be complimentary. Well, I looked for the unit, I had my daughter looking out for the package even my Postal carrier. NOPE,NO PACKAGE, I WAITED ABOUT 2 WEEKS AND CALLED MAGIC JACK BACK, I REVIEWED MY BANK STATEMENT AND CALLED THE BANK AND FILED A DISPUTE!! WELL MAGIC JACK TOLD MY BANK THEY MAILED THE UNIT, WHICH I NEVER RECEIVED AND MY BANK WOULD NOT GIVE ME A CREDIT. MY SERVICE HAS BEEN INTERRUPTED AND AFTER 45 MINUTES OF TALKING TO MAGIC JACK AND 4 PEOPLE AND TWO DISCONNECTS I AM NOW GOING TO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU AND THE FCC! THIS COMPANY IS A SCAM, I'VE HAD MAGIC JACK FOR ABOUT 6 YEARS NOW AND NEVER, EVER AGAIN WILL I RENEW MY SERVICE!!! REMEMBER IF YOU WHENYOUR INTERNET GOES OUT SO DOES THE SERVICE!! BETTER TO JUST STICK WITH YOUR CELLURAL PHONE!!! THAT IS MORE RELIABLE AND A REPUTABLE COMPANY!!!

WHEN IT WORKS YOU CAN CALL YOUR CELL PHONE TO FIND IT

This worked great for 8 years. Now no acknowledgment of renewal. If you phone up customer service, they state they can help if you are going to pay for something. If its for something you already paid for, they tell you to call Magicjackcares which has hour long waiting times and folks that tell you to blame yourself or go the FAQ. You are essentially paying for service that isn't delivered. I'm not sure how much longer these guys can survive chargebacks.

When it's working, the service is excellent.
Renewal billing is acknowledged in their accounting, but not fully in your account. So there are account shut-offs, even after you've paid. Completely disconnecting new subscriber customer service from existing customer service is the bulls-eye brandmark of a fraudulent service - am really sorry that they've figured this is a business model going forward. In a service business, the biggest source of clients is renewals. Ripping them off is unsustainable and fatal.

I've had issues with magicjack repeatedly giving me an error 1 code even after resetting it numerous times. I tried to contact customer and I initially couldn't get any assistance. Therefore, I contacted BBB and made a complaint. I finally got a response from magicjack during my work hours which means I wasn't at home to do trouble shooting. The representative reported back to BBB that they tried to assist me without success. Then they called my cellphone when I was at work late and left a message. They reported back that I answered my cellphone and hung up the phone. How is that possible if they were able to leave a message? Finally, I was told they don't replace magicjack products bought from retailers. I had to replace the USB adapter after having the product for 2 months. Don't waist your time or money.

Customer service is maddening, torturous, and murderous. You will never hear yes, or we will fix it. No matter what you ask, the answer is always NO. If it stopped working, you lost the service and your money. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID, AVOID, AVOID, AVOID, AVOID.

I have been with Magic Jack for the pass five years and I was somewhat satisfy with their service over the years since it was my house phone and mainly used for faxing. My current device broken back in July 2019 with out warning. I think it may have been due to an lightning storm. Anyhow, they tried to help me reset it several times until I decided it was no longer worth it and so, I decided to buy a replacement device. I ordered the replacement (costing about $67) and realized two later weeks I did not received it. I call up they Customer Service # and got the run-around of my life. They claimed the device was shipped to my address, which it was not because zip code of the delivered address and mine are not the same. Still MAGIC JACK is telling me that I need to file a loss claim with the Post Office and the Post Office is telling me that the sender is responsible for filing the claim. I have contacted MAGIC JACK about 7 times on this issue and all I keep hearing from them is "you need to file a loss claim with the post office." In the meantime, I am out of pocket $67 plus $102 for three year subscription that I am unable to use and now I am told it is non-refundable. My advice to new or potential customers, DO NOT GET MAGIC JACK!!! And for existing customers, if your MAGIC JACK DEVICE breaks, GET RID OF MAGIC JACK BEFORE THEY RIP YOU OFF ALSO!!! I say it is time for a class action law suit!!

    The Skinny

    magicJack Revealed

    What is magicJack?

A magicJack is a small device that allows you to make Internet phone calls for cheap prices.

As of 2016, magicJack Express costs $39.95 plus shipping and handling. You get 3 months of free unlimited calling to the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. Additional years cost $35.

    How does magicJack work?

One of magicJack's top selling points is its ease of installation.

    1. Plug your phone into the magicJack
    2. Plug the magicJack into your computer
    3. Start making calls

Is there a special magicJack phone?

Nope! The magicJack device is what's known in the industry as an analog telephone adapter (ATA). You won't need a special phone in order to use magicJack.

What do you think of magicJack?

Many users have had a variety of issues with magicJack (as evidenced by the reviews). However, here are a couple of advantages of magicJack:

    1. Lowest Monthly Rates

Setting aside the fact that the first 6 months of phone service with magicJack are absolutely free, monthly rates are available for as little as $3.00 per month. Prices like that are extremely hard to complain about, and even some of our most scathing magicJack reviews still rate magicJack with 5 stars in the price category.

    2. Cheap Equipment

Any way you slice it, $39.95 is a great price to pay for the complete setup of a VoIP phone service that uses your existing phones. Other VoIP companies require specialized IP phones that can cost over $100, and an ATA adapter alone is often more than $50.

Even if the device runs into a problem and needs to be replaced, the low cost takes most of the sting out of a new purchase. In fact, with the money you'll save with magicJack's low monthly rate, the device practically pays for itself.

    3. Easy to Use

MagicJack is designed for people who have never heard of VoIP in the first place, and want a simple plug-and-play device that works right away. That's exactly what magicJack offers, and the new magicJack PLUS offers even more options. The old device required a constant connection to a computer to work, but the new one only needs to do so once to register. After that, just plug it into the wall and feel free to shut the computer off. The video below outlines how to use magicJack without a computer.

Previously the magicJack software was been reported by some as very difficult to remove. MagicJack software now comes with an easier to access uninstall option, so this point is no longer valid.

    MagicJack Customer Service

Unfortunately, magicJack does not have a customer service hotline. That means that the only way to resolve a service issue is through a high-traffic chat room, which occasionally has a slow response time as a result. Fortunately, the device is easy to install, so you'll likely never need the support. If you run into trouble, our best advice is to be patient with the chat, and see if the issue lies with your router configuration or Internet speed in the meantime.

If everything checks out and the chat system seems frustrating, just try doing something else for a while and wait for the chat system to get back to you. You can watch one of the many fan-made YouTube videos for magicJack support, try one of the links below to see if your issue is answered there, or even take care of checking your email while you wait. Sometimes, the best option is to simply wait a few hours for the peak traffic to die down, so that the support team has more time to dedicate to your needs. Either way, spending an hour or two researching and fixing any issues with the magicJack adapter is definitely worth the amount of money that you're saving with .

    Third-party magicJack Support

There are also some helpful blogs out there on the web that cover how to use magicJack if you still encounter trouble.

    Overall Analysis

In the end, and despite the issues that customers raise about magicJack service, we feel that magicJack offers a very low priced Residential VoIP service, especially for someone new to VoIP. However, there are a lot of negative customer reviews you should take into consideration. The extremely low monthly rate for unlimited phone calls is impossible to ignore, and the ease of installation further makes the case that magicJack's barebones VoIP service is one of the best in the industry.!

Don't take our word for it. We've got over 100 magicJack reviews for real magicJack customers. See what magicJack users have to say.

If you have used magicJack, here's you should do: Write a review. We could use your voice on our website.
