magicJack Reviews

magicJack is an extremely cheap VoIP provider that works by using your existing Internet connection to make and receive calls. magicJack provides a plug-and-play device (like a USB drive) that you can connect to your computer or high-speed modem to start making local and long-distance calls. You can use magicJack for as little as $19.95/year per line.

With the newest magicJack Plus system, you don't have to have your computer on at all times in order to receive a call.

Magic Jack does not perform as advertised. Most of the time, it cuts-out, will drop the call or the voice communication on one side or the other or both cannot be understood. I have used it in Europe, Mexico and the States and the results are always the same.

Cheap way to call the States

Be aware that this company WILL NOT help you in case your unit malfunctions and you have a spare unit that you wish to use for the remaining balance of the malfunctioning unit. THEY WILL JUST SAY SORRY, JUST BUY ANOTHER UNIT TO UTILIZE THE REMAINING BALANCE. Yep, they won't let us use a unit we already paid for to use the service we already paid for. Buyer beware!

Not even the price especially when the unit malfunctions suddenly.
Say goodbye to remaining credits when device malfunctions.

bought the unit, went online and paid to have my home number ported and then comes the bomb. You have to sign up for a number registry for either 5 or 10 years at $150 - $200. Had it mentioned this on the box I probably would have gone for it, but given they were sneaky rat battards, I am throwing it away. what a waste of money. Also, the indian customer support is next to impossible to understand.

It is great when it works and as long as you don't have to deal with the fools in tech support its great. When you have to deal with support they just don't listen or rather read what you type as there is no pone number to deal directly with them

WHEN IT WORKS ITS GREAT
WHEN IT STOPS FUNCTIONING PROPERLY THE IDIOTS IN CUSTOMER SERVICE/TECH SUPPORT ARE JUST THAT!

I had AT&T. it got too expensive and retention didn't have any options. I thought I'd give this a try. If you want poor quality sound, iffy service, most of your calls to go unanswered by you, this is the answer for you. If you want clear sounding calls, and you want the option to answer the call yourself, this is not for you. I have fast internet, so I thought how bad could it be? It's bad. If someone does get through to me, I have to apologize because the caller can't hear me well. That's if the caller gets through. Be very cautious. If you need reliable service, DON'T get Magic Jack. It's terrible.

Cheap
Doesn't have quality sound. Makes noise on the other end. It doesn't consistently answer calls. Customer service can't fix it. We can hang up the phone, and try to call it and it doesn't answer. The MagicJack customer is not available recording answers. It doesn't work, doesn't answer calls more than it does. I'm looking for another alternative. BTW I have high speed cable internet. It's wicked fast internet.

For no particular reason, my magic jack began to send all incoming calls to voice mail. I contacted tech support online and after four hours or so, they decided the unit I had was defective and told me I had to purchase a new device for $25.00. I did so, but when it arrived and was installed, the same problem persisted. After another 5 ours on the computer, the techs were unable to fix the problem Due to the way the technical support operates, I had chats with a dozen techs, and every time something had to rebooted, I lost the connection the that tech and had to start over with another tech. After another 5 hours, nothing got accomplished as every time it was "fixed," 15 minutes later it would again not receive calls.
I contacted the corporate offices and talked with a manager who assured me that she would have "one of her techs" call me within the hour, and if they could not fix the problem, she would she to it that a refund was processed. No call came, so I contact the corporate office again. This time I spoke with another manger who was rude and basically combative. She claimed that I would get an email about the refund - which never came. I have today spoken to another manager at corporate who tried to cancel my subscription but "could not do it on her end." So now I am paying for a device that doesn't work for either incoming or outgoing calls.
The deice is fine when it works, but when you have an issue, it is absolutely useless. Worse yet, Magic Jack doesn't really care whether it'd customers get good service or not, and based upon the personnel with whom I have had contact, they have no concept of customer service.

Device works fine until there is a problem. Then it is useless and the support even more useless.
After 10 hours on the computer with a dozen techs, Magic Jack refuses to issue a refund of the subscription or the new device I was forced to purchase which did not solve the problems. Contacted corporate office and they are even more ineffectual. Beware folks!

Always going down. Have to restart all the time. It finally quit entirely. Customer service didn't understand half the questions I asked. They finally said they'd ship me a new Magic Jack Plus for $29.95 to "fix" the problem. Ridiculous! Not worth the cheap price!

service is horrible. They won't talk to you like a person. They do Chat only and people on Chat line don't know how to comprehend what they are reading. This time, they changed Chat person mid-stream and had to start all over. Chat got interrupted and lost all. so, had to start all over for a third time. I understand computer connections and it is a link problem with their system but they won't go there until they have you crawl around your office unplugging etc. That should not be necessary. Once I paid twice, it worked. Surprised?

When phone works it is fine.
end up having to renew twice every year. They mix up the Plus with old regular. Hours after trying to fix, end up having to renew both numbers. Magically....Jack fixes after paying twice for same plan and will not refund overpayment. $35 turns to $70. Second year this happened! Will not renew next year.

I've used Magic Jack for about 3 years, upgrading my equipment as their technology improved. Their software is extremely crude, however. Some days I cannot use the system at all because it drops out so much there is no way to converse with someone. Some days, the device is not recognized by my computer at all and I have to unplug and then plug the box back into my USB port. Faxing is generally not possible. There is no way to set the time stamping of voicemails to your local time zone, so there is no way to tell what time of day a message is actually received. I had to change my phone number because of a stalker, which I informed them of. They sold that old number to my stalker, who then got all the calls to my old number. I think all they care about is having a cheap system that barely works most of the time.

It's cheap and you get unlimited calls.
Intermittent connectivity. No Faxing. No local time stamping of voicemails.

    The Skinny

    magicJack Revealed

    What is magicJack?

A magicJack is a small device that allows you to make Internet phone calls for cheap prices.

As of 2016, magicJack Express costs $39.95 plus shipping and handling. You get 3 months of free unlimited calling to the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. Additional years cost $35.

    How does magicJack work?

One of magicJack's top selling points is its ease of installation.

    1. Plug your phone into the magicJack
    2. Plug the magicJack into your computer
    3. Start making calls

Is there a special magicJack phone?

Nope! The magicJack device is what's known in the industry as an analog telephone adapter (ATA). You won't need a special phone in order to use magicJack.

What do you think of magicJack?

Many users have had a variety of issues with magicJack (as evidenced by the reviews). However, here are a couple of advantages of magicJack:

    1. Lowest Monthly Rates

Setting aside the fact that the first 6 months of phone service with magicJack are absolutely free, monthly rates are available for as little as $3.00 per month. Prices like that are extremely hard to complain about, and even some of our most scathing magicJack reviews still rate magicJack with 5 stars in the price category.

    2. Cheap Equipment

Any way you slice it, $39.95 is a great price to pay for the complete setup of a VoIP phone service that uses your existing phones. Other VoIP companies require specialized IP phones that can cost over $100, and an ATA adapter alone is often more than $50.

Even if the device runs into a problem and needs to be replaced, the low cost takes most of the sting out of a new purchase. In fact, with the money you'll save with magicJack's low monthly rate, the device practically pays for itself.

    3. Easy to Use

MagicJack is designed for people who have never heard of VoIP in the first place, and want a simple plug-and-play device that works right away. That's exactly what magicJack offers, and the new magicJack PLUS offers even more options. The old device required a constant connection to a computer to work, but the new one only needs to do so once to register. After that, just plug it into the wall and feel free to shut the computer off. The video below outlines how to use magicJack without a computer.

Previously the magicJack software was been reported by some as very difficult to remove. MagicJack software now comes with an easier to access uninstall option, so this point is no longer valid.

    MagicJack Customer Service

Unfortunately, magicJack does not have a customer service hotline. That means that the only way to resolve a service issue is through a high-traffic chat room, which occasionally has a slow response time as a result. Fortunately, the device is easy to install, so you'll likely never need the support. If you run into trouble, our best advice is to be patient with the chat, and see if the issue lies with your router configuration or Internet speed in the meantime.

If everything checks out and the chat system seems frustrating, just try doing something else for a while and wait for the chat system to get back to you. You can watch one of the many fan-made YouTube videos for magicJack support, try one of the links below to see if your issue is answered there, or even take care of checking your email while you wait. Sometimes, the best option is to simply wait a few hours for the peak traffic to die down, so that the support team has more time to dedicate to your needs. Either way, spending an hour or two researching and fixing any issues with the magicJack adapter is definitely worth the amount of money that you're saving with .

    Third-party magicJack Support

There are also some helpful blogs out there on the web that cover how to use magicJack if you still encounter trouble.

    Overall Analysis

In the end, and despite the issues that customers raise about magicJack service, we feel that magicJack offers a very low priced Residential VoIP service, especially for someone new to VoIP. However, there are a lot of negative customer reviews you should take into consideration. The extremely low monthly rate for unlimited phone calls is impossible to ignore, and the ease of installation further makes the case that magicJack's barebones VoIP service is one of the best in the industry.!

Don't take our word for it. We've got over 100 magicJack reviews for real magicJack customers. See what magicJack users have to say.
