I started using VOIPYourLife about 2 months ago, most important feature for me - unlimited overseas calling.
Customer service is not bad, at least they are here, in US, porting number takes painfully long time - more than a month in my case.
Do not expect to pay the quoted rate, I am on $29.95 plan and actually paying almost $39 a month with taxes, fees, etc.
Somehow I am being charged about 17% misterious state tax among other things...
International calls are not always connecting, if they do connect - it takes more than a minute most of the time to connect with confusing tones, when you think that there is a ring on the other end, but after 20-30 or more seconds it switches to another set of beeps, which is actually ringing number you are dialing.
Well, using their line for faxing is not reliable (most VOIP providers are the same).
Their website sucks!
Conclusion:
Service: Average
Support: Above Average
Features: Above Average
Reliability: Above Average
Website: Poor
Rates: Better than Average (if you need to call Internationally)

I got this service about 2 weeks ago. I decided to try it along side Ethlnk 1VOice to compare. There is NO comparison. VYL is great. Terriffic quality, Customer/tech support is US located- need I say more? Patient, knowledgeable, even personable - customer service was becoming a lost art, until NOW. Excellent audo quality, no echo, no dropped calls. When I use the SoftPhone with a headset my friends can't believe its VOIP - almost like Carnegie Hall, unreal.
The service did go down for about a 1/2 hour but they fixed it immediately which is why I gave reliability a 4. TO compare, I am also running Erthlnk 1Voice to compare, there is NO comparison. Ertlnk cust supp stinks - in India/Phill, spend hours trying to get issues resolved and you get nowhere..thinking of switching other line to VYL. Great experience..HIGHLY recommend. IF you go elsewhere you might not like what you get. WORTH every cent and more. - Tom

I switched to them from my old wire line service about a year and a half ago and have had no regrets. Their service works as well as Ma Bell’s or better. The features are much better (blacklisting, call filtering, etc).
Since I ordered the service I have made two calls to customer service. Unlike Ma Bell where you have to talk to a computer or work through a long series of pressing digits, both calls were answered quickly and by a person that speaks English as a first language. Both calls were resolved quickly.
If you are trying to decide between VoIP service and your old wire line service, all I can say is there is no way I would ever go back to the Ma Bell nightmare. I get more features, better service, better customer service and actually pay less.

I've had the service for about 4 months now. I switched from Packet8 after being with them for over a year. With Packet8 I had the $20 service, yet after all the fees and taxes I was paying over $25 and they were starting to add more fees, so I left. VYL had a $24 plan and when I spoke with customer service, they said monthly bills are around $25.50 so I switched. The call quality is about the same as Packet8, not the best, but not too bad either. The caller ID never did give out the name, usually just my number. Recently they started having issues where when someone calls me, the name of the incoming caller sometimes comes up and sometimes it just says incoming call. The call history can be pulled up, but all times are Eastern, I live on the West Coast. Called tech. Support, they said they changed it, but everything is still the same here. The bills were $25.50, but all of a sudden last month I get the statement and it is now $27.47 I called up cust. service and asked whats up. They said that they have been paying all the E911 fees, but now decided to pass it along to the customers. He also mentioned that basically all the other VOIP companies were having the cust. pay for it. Which is 1, but because of them paying the fee, they used to be somewhat compatitive, not anymore. I used to pay $30 with fees and taxes for my land line, so this is not going to work for me. I'll be looking for another VOIP company thats cheaper. The whole point of VOIP was to save money compared to the land line, well they're making it real hard to do that. I dont do that much long distace calling, so there is no way I would ever pay for a VOIP as much as for a land line, it's just crazy. So I'm off to reading more reviews on the other providers. Hope this helps to some of you looking to switch to VYL.

I just moved from Vonage at a lower rate. I chose VOIP Your Life because of the international plan and the greater number of countries that they offer. The instructions to set up are not too clear and hard to understand. I have Verizon FIOS (Fiber Optic), and they had me install the phone connector in front of my router. Their technical service did not know that FIOS has a different type of modem as the signal is a laser light, not an electrical pulse. It took several calls before I spoke to a technician that had experience with Verizon FIOS. They had me place the phone connection after the router and it worked.
My only issues so fare are as follows; 1) it takes a relatively long time for calls to connect. The quality is great and I have never had a issue with the system going down. 2) I ported my telephone number of 9 years and they can not make it my primary number.
Overall I ma satisfied with the service and quality of the calls. My suggestions are as follows; 1) Speed the connections when dialing out. 2) Add some more features. Specifically the caller ID name. 3) Prepare your technical staff on the new internet access technologies that are available. WIMAX is right over the horizon.

Been with them since start of 2007. Sound quality is very good... the included router was fine, but the echo problems with it were addressed by tech support. However, they are very quick to blame your connection first--I did NOT like that. Almost a scripted reaction to end the call....the tech rep pretty much did not listen to me or believe me that everything was fine on my end--he's like "Oh I see some latency on hop#3 to our servers". Yeah a whopping extra 15ms. -Not- the cause of the echo... anyway, it was clear he wan't about to help me so I just hung up and had -much- better results by emailing (surprisingly) tech support. They remotely adjusted the router which fixed the echo-I knew it was a simple fix!
Price is about average--however, they just recently added extra surcharges... Basically, you add an extra 25%-30% to the base price and that is your 1 monthly charge. It's almost getting to the point of might as well just get a regular landline! The gov't and the big telecos win I guess! Though I didn't like how voipyourlife just 'snuck' in those charges without any warning or notice. (How hard would it be to do a group email?)
Overall, it's a good solid service--though I get the feeling the company is much smaller than it appears to be. If they add any more extra fees, then i will probably dump them and just get a regular landline--why not???
** Extra note: *** Just noticed they now have an -optional- annual plan--this makes me a little nervous! At the first hint of them wanting/requiring us to switch to annual plans, i will drop them so fast and switch to landline. Let's hope that will never be the case!

I've been using VYL service for almost a year now. Up until last month it was great, except occasional echo during calls and call display not showing the name of the caller.
Now when I make a call, it doesn't show my number on people's call display, just some dummy number, different every time. But the worst thing is that I can not call any 1-800... numbers. When I dial, I hear a prerecorded message "You can call this # from your calling area 1-3-60" WTF!? I'm in 416 (Toronto), haven't change anything on my side (cable internet, modem, adapter, etc).
I've been talking to tech support, customer service, tech support again and the issues are still not resolved. I wouldn't even repeat all bull$hit explanations from VYL.
Think twice before signing with them!
