Magic Jack - We've all heard the saying, 'You get what you pay for,' and it's become increasingly clear that magicJack is no exception. Sure, it appears to be a small, crafty device claiming to change the world of communications for a ridiculously low annual fee, but the reality is you may find yourself down and out after ordering from this company.

I too am in agreement.  In theory, MagicJack is a good idea.  In practice, MagicJack stinks.  There are answering issues, audio issues and for me the worst I've experienced is with the voicemail.  I get notification via email that I have messages yet no messages are recorded.  This is frustrating. The device is totally unreliable.   I was looking to save a buck since I've joined the ranks of the unemployed.  However, I am not sure I want to give up reliability, especially when potential jobs are at stake.

Magic Jack works perfect for our needs and was simple to use if you have the right environment and expectations

Reviewed by: AnotherConsumer (xxx.xxx.67.146)

I have a wireless network and cell phones.  I bought the magic jack to replace our hardly ever used home line at $50\month --I ordered Online, got the product, plugged it in and it worked immediately for me -- I use a wireless G network and have Comcast internet.  Anyway, it fired up, installed the software, asked me for my information, I picked my area code, and within 5 minutes it was working with an old phone just laying down in my storage room (nothing fancy, I also since have connected my new phone with remote receivers and it worked with every phone in my house)  I could within minutes make outbound calls and I made calls to the house (with my cell) and it worked fine.  After reading all the negative reviews I was pleased and amazed at how simple it was -- I was thinking it probably all depends on your Home Computer, Network Setup, and HighSpeed provider.  Making sure you dont have any firewall software misconfigured on your PC's and network is probably a good thing to check. Anyway, I did have 1 issue -- I could not make long Distance calls or 800 calls for some reason -- At 11:00 PM I went to magic Jack.COM and did a LIVE CHAT with a support rep -- which I was amazed at that time of night. He had me install a "newer version" of software to the Magic Jack and instantly problem solved.** Overall at this point I thought no sweat how simple to setupGiven we use our cell phones most of the time our main goals were to not pay for home phone but still have a #, be able to make calls free (on occaission), have a message box, and of course have it work.  Magic Jack did all these things.  However, if this was my only phone line I probably would go with something else as it does depend on several things, Internet Service, Cable Modem, Power, Computer software and desktop, and the quality of the phone calls isnt as good for me once in a while.  But you know what-- I DONT CARE since I rarely use it to make calls. besides its almost free and it does work.  Also I love I can take it with me on trips and with my laptop to make calls.  The voicemail going to my email address in WAV files is cool -- so I can get messages online. My overall review is this is an awesome product for those who want the savings but dont rely solely on this phone as their only phone. and\or arent going to get upset if it isnt PERFECT in some way.   You need to have a good internet connection, adequate computer and network, and thats it.  I would recommend this to any tech savy person who wants to not pay so much and has a cell phone or anyone who wants a great deal and takes if for what it is intended to do -- Im definately a happy customer

The price is the only thing good about Majic Jack.Basically I have thrown $46 down a hole.I have tried to find ways to contact these guys at Majic Jack to communicate to them issues we are having.Daily, we run into issues with the phone.Dail phone numbers and they don't ever dail out.The people at the other end of the line can hears us but we can't hear them and vise versa.Sound quality is OK - Kinda like how cell phones us to be. with a little bit of lag. There are certian numbers we have called but it will never connect to. Not sure why. Anyway out shopping for better voip service and this site has a lot of info. but stay away from majic jack!

Works intermittently. Many times I can not connect; dial tone is there but will not connect. Down loaded all the fixes, and updates, but makes no difference. Sometimes works, but then cuts out. Frutrating waste of money!!!!! This is a majic jack problem because I have another VIOP phone line on the came cable line and it works perfectly all the time.

They auth'd my account so many times my bank shut the card down thinking it was being hacked.  Then they took my money and didn't bother to give me my service.  I had to go through at *least* five agents to get someone that was giving me the same empty promise that others before them gave: Please wait 24 to 48 hours and your service should work.  We've forwarded your issue to the Engineers blah blah blah blah and nothing.I might recommend this to my enemy.  That's about it.

I was incorrectly impressed by the device until I stumbled upon the fine prints. One fine day, the company disabled my connection (after 3 months of service). They have the worst customer service I have seen. I chatted on their website with multiple reps, and finally they told me the only way to get help is to call a particular phone number. And as expected, there is no one there to pick up. About a weeks of trying, I got hold of someone and he bluntly told me that I have excessively used it. I asked what it is supposed to be unlimited talk. He DENIED and referred me to clause 6 of TOS. I asked how do you define “execessive”, he did not answer. I have used couple hours a day for 3 months and they think it is EXCESSIVE. They are not ready to enable my connection, but now asking me to pay 1cent/min (!!!). This is insane and a BIG TRAP! Here is the clause: ————– 6. Proper Use … If magicJack sees excessive use or systematic or intentional misuse, it reserves the right, in our sole discretion, to terminate your use of the magicJackTM device and/or Software immediately, and you will not be entitled to get a refund of any licensing fee or any other fee you may have paid to us. ———— STAY AWAY from this TRAP!!!

Magic Jack

The only reason that I gave MJ a series of 1 ratings is because there was no 0!  For weeks I tried to get this thing to work.  I changed from dial-up to broadband to save $$$.  I am on Social Security so saving $$ is important.  Now I have a broadband bill and a phone bill because Magic Jack does not work!

Not Ready for Prime Time - continued

As an update to my MagicJack review, last week Thursday I received a return authorization from MagicJack and sent the jacks back via First Class Mail.  Today I received an e-mail from MagicJack indicating they had received my return and that a credit would be issued to my debit card.  I checked my bank account and the credit had already been posted.  In fairness, I thought I should mention they held up their end of the 30 Day Trial bargain.
