MagicJack is one of the most popular providers out there today. With their revolutionary technology — the MagicJack — this provider has widely expanded the US market for VoIP with its aggressive advertising and cheap phone service.

MagicJack has one residential VoIP plan. You can lock in low rates by signing a contract, up to a five year term. However, MagicJack’s phone service is dependent on your internet connection (like all other VoIP providers), so make sure that you check your high speed internet connection before you buy. Magicjack: Technical Issues From Day 1

Posted on: Feb 01, 2012
Pros
Cheap, but you get what you pay for
Cons
Had dead air when a call was first connected, so I would miss the "hello". Also, it would drop calls on a regular basis. Bottom line - unusable.

Had technical issues from day 1.   Spent literally over 15 hours on their online chat tech support.  Tried every software & driver re-install, and configuration possible.  Ended up giving them remote access to my machine, where they added configurations to my internet router, and my firewall.   Still did not fix the problem after 15 hours of working with tech support.  At that time, they started dropping my chat session for tech support.  I would contact them via chat, they would say they are transferring me to an agent that can help me, and that was it - the chat session was dropped.  Tried that a dozen times before I finally just gave up.  At that point it was apparent they did not want to work with me on resolving the technical issue.  I've been a technology professional for over 20 yrs, and owned a software company.  That was the most horrid technology experience in my lifetime.  I had no choice but to go with another provider.

MagicJack Plus - Worst Customer Service

Posted on: Dec 19, 2011
Pros
Cons
Customer experience

Such a worst customer service that I've ever experienced in my life. Ordered magic jack for $34.95. I didn't get any confirmation on the order placed. Chatted with their so called Live Agents. Agent told me he sees the order but didn't go thru. It was problem with my internet service provider. What a crap? He gave me link to update my credit card and I did it. He confirmed me he sees the update and it'll get processed within 4 hrs. After 4 days no update and tried reaching a live agent. same statement order received, but didn't go thru. Internet service provider error. They will make you to wait for 30-45 mins. Then they will transfer Vienna: I am transferring you to one of our top 10% agents as rated by our customers. Please hold while I transfer you. I decided to cancel the order and informed him to cancel. this is response I received. Randy: Alright. Please do not worry. As I checked it here, the order was been killed and did not go through successfully and that would mean that the order has been canceled already by the system.  Please do not worry, you will not be charged for it and the $1.00 is a test charge and will be dropped off within 24-48 hours. what the hell I was doing with these guys for more than 2 hours..wasting my time when the order was already cancelled. Please don't waste your money..such a horrible experience.

MAGIC JACK SCAM

I sent a message to [email removed] requesting further info. I also said that people should be informed that they still have to pay the monthly telephone line charge and local and federal taxes the 911 fee, etc. I received this return message

Remote host said: 553 5.7.1 Not an open relay, so get lost[RCPT_TO]

MagicJack: Sub-Standard Service

Posted on: Nov 21, 2011
Pros
Cons

The cons are so significant the pros are completely insignificant.  When attempted installation; IT WOULD NOT LOAD; the techs were not knowledgeable, at all.  I talked to three different techs, with three different opinions and solutions.  In the end, the assistance resulted in my system drivers being corrupted, creating serious issues with my operating system.  Regarding the quality of the calls, it is deplorable. The calls are VERY noisy and often, abruptly dropped.  Further, when your computer is down and offline, so is Magic Jack.  There is an annoying window that pops up on your compluter monitor whenever you receive or place calls. It is a nuisance.  As stated, the tech support is TECH NON-SUPPORT!  DO NOT BUY INTO THE MARKETING CRAP!!  IT IS A SUB-STANDARD SERVICE....YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR !!  DON'T FALL FOR THE HYPE MARKETING; AS PREVIOUSLY STATED....THIS IS A BOGUS SERVICE THAT ISN'T WORTH THE FEES CHARGED.  If you're into mashochism; this is your system.  I hate it; my opinion is common among Magic Jack victims !!

Magic Jack works great for me, but...

Posted on: Jul 27, 2011
Pros
Magic Jack works great for me for both incoming and outgoing calls. I can also fax in off hours. Faxing during peak hours 4Pm-10PM gets noisy lines ... but that is the internet connection, not Magic Jack.
Cons
The people in the Magic Jack chat support but cannot do things to a customer account that they should be able to...like renew the account for 1 year ($19.95) when they have a billing bug. Their top 10% chatters should have this capability and/or their manager should be able to do this.

Magic Jack works great for me; incoming/outgoing calls, and faxes. Due to identity theft problems, I do not use or have a credit card. Their FAQ response to "What forms of payment can I use?" indicates that a prepaid credit card can be used. I went to Walgreens and bought a prepaid Visa gift credit card and tried using it to add another year onto my Magic Jack account. The prepaid credit card was rejected. After contacting their chat support personnel, they said that their "engineers" were assigned the problem and would notify me when it was fixed. In the meantime, my subscription would lapse until the Magic Jack site would accept my prepaid visa credit card. I asked if they could renew my account, its only $19.95 for an additional year and I had found a bug in their billing system that was affecting their revenue stream. They were adamant that they could not renew my account and terminated the chat. So for Magic Jack customers that can use a personal credit card, it is a good product. But if you try to use a prepaid credit card, it will not work until they fix their billing bug.

All in all I have to say I am very happy that I went with MagicJack

Posted on: Mar 22, 2011
Pros
At $20 per year price is the biggest PRO, 911 calling, voice, and FREE 411 not to mention email notification when a voice mail is received.
Cons
The only con is having to have it connected to internet to work.

I was stuck in a circle of paying too much for too little. In 2001 I got Direct Tv and for Christmas my wife got me a tivo, it is a Direct Tv box so this meant in order to recieve updates on the Tivo it had to be connected to a land line. I purchased the "lifetime subscription" (a $12 a month saving in itself). So I had the issue of having to have a landline and I went with DSL from that provider. The monthly cost for phone and internet was $135. I had no issues with this for a long time, but the fact is 3mb limit on DSL became too slow so I started looking into ways to save money and increase my internet spped.

I had heard about MagicJack but never looked into it, one day I saw an infomercial for it and I began to think "could this be the answer I need?". I am a bit of a geek so I do have old outdated computers in the home, I thought "why not use one of them for MagicJack?". I <cut the cord> with my landline/dsl provider. I contacted the local cable company for just internet service. I now have 16 mb internet that I pay $65 a month for (this cut my cost I was paying landline provider in half). In the six months I have been using MagicJack it has made all calls with no issues and I have recieved calls and voicemails with no issues either.

My home may not be the perfect test because everyone in the home has cell service from Sprint. This means all mobile calls in or out are free. We do not use the landline as often as many would, but I do have a phone connected should we get calls or someone needs to use a landline. I also like the fact should I decide to travel I can just bring the MagicJack plug it into my laptop and make and recieve calls. Most hotels provide internet service so this is also a PRO. If I needed too I could sign up for international plan, but that has never come up in my case. MagicJack also allows you to create a vanity number (at an extra cost) should you require that.

All in all I have to say I am very happy that I went with MagicJack.

MagicJack Review

Posted on: Mar 15, 2011
Pros
Excellent price. Works well when connected to a broadband connection that is fast enough.
Cons
Most miserable tech support I have ever encountered on the Internet in the past 14 years. Promise of one time free change to make a number change was a lie. They stalled so long in making a requested change that they managed to change the free change to a charged change. Very, very poor, and weak excuses for why they are unable to make changes promised, and some never are honored.

The experience of the inventor, and the product idea is just great. When it first came out he did try to accomplish all of what was promised. However, as the company grew, so did the upper management operations. It grew into a hodge-podge of deceit, lies, and broken promises. When I first got my MagicJack phone service about three years ago, they did not support my area code. The number I was given had a good, local prefix and number, but with the wrong area code for my area. I was promised that when they got my area code they would correct that for me for free, and would leave my phone number as it had been assigned. As they had some problems with a live chat at the time, I was called by a support tech when I finally got my request through to them. This turned out to be a bad thing for me as they now have no record of that call. The last two times I have contacted live support, both said the same thing, exactly. (Their engineers were working on the problem, and that it would be taken care of soon.) I was even told that they would notify me when they got it taken care of. I had asked that they notify me by email as they seemed to be doing that anyway with calls I had missed. I was given to understand that their engineers would have the problem 'fixed' within a couple of months. This was in both calls, and both were separated by a year. l approached the issue on the last call about the promise of one free change as it was then I was informed about the new charge for that change. They refused to honor that earlier promise. To me, that promise was a type of contract that must be honored as whoever had changed it is required by law to honor all previous agreements. At any rate, they refuse. I cannot, in all honesty, make a recommendation to a person to get this service without informing them of the very poor support, and of probable breach of any promise that the company makes. I tell them of the many issues that can cause the system to not work well, but that if they have a good broadband connection it does work well most of the time. This is especially true if only used for long distance calling outside a persons local call area. I also mention that most times for another person to call from a local number to a MagicJack phone with a non-local area code they may be charged for a long distance call. When it comes to the "Portability" of a phone number already in use by a person, MagicJack doesn't even support this with their own numbers, let along one provided by another phone service. In my case, my number, and prefix is a valid, and non-issued number in my area, but MagicJack has refused to keep my number while changing the area code to my local area. My experience in the phone service communications field is great, so I am able to see through the lies given by the MagicJack tech support. They are most likely not real tech support people, but instead mere 'operators' that are given a 'pat' set of instructions to say to people. Accurate, honest information does not come from MagicJack.

MagicJack Review - An Unproductive Conversation

Posted on: Nov 15, 2010
Pros
Cheap....$19.95 a year
Cons
It is impossible to speak with a person on the phone. Absolutly no way to have a phone conversation except if you are terminating under your free trial. All technical conversations can NOT be escalated to management level persons. As can be see below, magicjack does not assume responsibility for resolving multi-vendor problems.

Jake is Magicjack; Dave is me. Note no solution, just a hang up.

You have just reached one of our super agents. These agents are graded in the top 10% by our customers and will fix your problem now. They are here to make sure you are satisfied. We are also giving you a one year free warranty to make sure you stay as a customer.

You are now chatting with 'Jake'

Jake: Hello, how may I help you?

Dave: Hi Jake. I'm about to take my magicjack back to radioshack, but I am giving you one last try. People can NOT call in to me. I am able to call out.

Jake: Did they heard any message when they try to contact your magicajck phone number?

Dave: I want call in and I want it fast. in Ohio (TMOBIL) and Washington (AT&T) they are being told to dial 1-305-848-8288

Dave: that number has them repeat my magicjack number and then they get through to me.

Dave: Not Acceptable.

Dave: I want direct calls in to my phone now

...

Jake: Dave, the 305-848-8288 number is temporary setting for the non-magicjack users to call your magicjack number. The only way to resolve that problem is to call the phone carrier of those number and tell them to properly route the calls

...

Dave: That is Magicjack's problem. why haven't you done it?? you ARE the phone provider, NOT me.

Dave: How do I find out about the other 48 states?

Dave: and finally, why should I be wasting my time with this??

...

Jake: Our engineers already communicated also the engineers of the other phone carrier and they are still on the process. Now, we gave a temporary settings for the non magicajck users to call the magicjack number by dialing the 305 number

...

Dave: when will this problem be fixed??

Dave: when will I have direct dialed input from all 50 states??

Dave: are you there??

...

Jake: We don't have the time frame since our engineers are still coordinating with the engineers of the other phone carrier about that and you will just receive incoming calls if they're done

Dave: Why did this work last week with no problem, then suddenly start to fail??

...

Jake: I perfectly understand your situation, however I believe we are keep on repeating the same process. May I now end this chat session? Thank you

Chat session has been terminated by the site operator.

MagicJack Review - After using a magicJack for2 months, it fell apart

Posted on: Oct 14, 2010
Pros
price
Cons
reliability, slows Internet connections, cheap quality, etc

After using a magicJack for2 months, it fell apart in two pieces. I used it on my laptop and I hate it.  Once in awhile magicJack just doesn't work. Restarting the software, unplugging or rebooting may or may not help. Sometimes when you work on a computer and talk to the other party they cannot hear you. It is not a magicJack it is a made of cheap plastic magicJUNK!
