magicJack Revealed

What is magicJack?

A magicJack is a small device that allows you to make Internet phone calls for cheap prices. As winners of the 2013 Frost & Sullivan Consumer's Choice Award for Overall Best VoIP Service Provider, we are happy to have them as one of our paid sponsors.

As of 2014, magicJack costs $49.95 plus shipping and handling. You get 6 months of calling free to the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. Additional years cost $29.95.

How does magicJack work?

One of magicJack's top selling points is its ease of installation.

  1. Plug your phone into the magicJack
  2. Plug the magicJack into your computer
  3. Start making calls

Is there a special magicJack phone?

Nope! The magicJack device is what's known in the industry as an analog telephone adapter (ATA). You won't need a special phone in order to use magicJack.

What do you think of magicJack?

Though some users have found issues with magicJack, we firmly believe that they offer the cheapest and most cost-effective service available in the Industry. Here are a couple reasons why:

1. Lowest Monthly Rates

Setting aside the fact that the first 6 months of phone service with magicJack are absolutely free, monthly rates are available for as little as $2.50 per month. Prices like that are extremely hard to complain about, and even some of our most scathing magicJack reviews still rate magicJack with 5 stars in the price category.

2. Cheap Equipment

Any way you slice it, $49.95 is a great price to pay for the complete setup of a VoIP phone service that uses your existing phones. Other VoIP companies require specialized IP phones that can cost over $100, and an ATA adapter alone is often more than $50.

Even if the device runs into a problem and needs to be replaced, the low cost takes most of the sting out of a new purchase. In fact, with the money you'll save with magicJack's low monthly rate, the device practically pays for itself.

3. Easy to Use

MagicJack is designed for people who have never heard of VoIP in the first place, and want a simple plug-and-play device that works right away. That's exactly what magicJack offers, and the new magicJack PLUS offers even more options. The old device required a constant connection to a computer to work, but the new one only needs to do so once to register. After that, just plug it into the wall and feel free to shut the computer off. The video below outlines how to use magicJack without a computer.

Previously the magicJack software was been reported by some as very difficult to remove. MagicJack software now comes with an easier to access uninstall option, so this point is no longer valid.

MagicJack Customer Service

Unfortunately, magicJack does not have a customer service hotline. That means that the only way to resolve a service issue is through a high-traffic chat room, which occasionally has a slow response time as a result. Fortunately, the device is easy to install, so you'll likely never need the support. If you run into trouble, our best advice is to be patient with the chat, and see if the issue lies with your router configuration or Internet speed in the meantime.

If everything checks out and the chat system seems frustrating, just try doing something else for a while and wait for the chat system to get back to you. You can watch one of the many fan-made YouTube videos for magicJack support, try one of the links below to see if your issue is answered there, or even take care of checking your email while you wait. Sometimes, the best option is to simply wait a few hours for the peak traffic to die down, so that the support team has more time to dedicate to your needs. Either way, spending an hour or two researching and fixing any issues with the magicJack adapter is definitely worth the amount of money that you're saving with .

There are also some helpful blogs posts that we've found on how to use magicJack if you still encounter trouble:

Overall Analysis

magicJackIn the end, and despite the issues that customers raise about magicJack service, we feel that magicJack still offers one of the best possible options for Residential VoIP service, especially for someone new to VoIP. The extremely low monthly rate for unlimited phone calls is impossible to ignore, and the ease of installation further makes the case that magicJack's barebones VoIP service is one of the best in the industry. With the 6 months of free calling that comes with service, you can't afford to not switch to magicJack today!

MagicJack Works Great

Pros
I've had a original MagicJack since they first came out and I'm still using it today, I've had no problems with it since day one.
Cons
The only con I have is with the IP you might me using..it has failed a few times in these years but the failure has always been with the IP not my computer or the MagicJack.

Once again as stated above: I've had a original MagicJack since they first came out and I'm still using it today, I've had no problems with it since day one. And the only problem with it has always been my Inter Provider connection. Once in a while I get a little noise, but again I know its the IP because I can hang up and do over and no noise. How can you have phone service any cheaper ?? you can't.

Slightly better than smoke signals. - Magicjack

Pros
The only pro here is the price, and Tragic Jack just raised that. Also, they are now putting fees on top of the price, so one needs to keep this in mind. The audio quality is alright 95% of the time, which I don't consider bad for the price.
Cons
Where do I start. The customer service? That's a joke. These idiots don't have a clue as to what a customer is requesting. My power supply went bad for my Magic Jack Plus? They wanted me to do dances through fire to get a new one from them. It was easier, (and cheaper), just to buy a new power supply from eBay. (And it was a better built one too). If you never have to use their customer "no support", you'll be okay. They just raised the prices too, plus are now adding fees to the prices. I'm need another phone line. Tragic Jack probably won't be my choice.

I have 2 of these devices. I still have the first one that you must plug into the computer to use. Believe it or not, it's the better of the two as far as dependability and quality. Oh.... and if you talk for a long time? (90 minutes seems to be the "magic" number). Tragic Jack will cut your call off... and will not let you redial the number. You'll get a recording saying all lines are busy. The other party can call you back though. I've had the first unit since 2008, and it still works. I've used it on my laptop with 4G connections with no problems.

Cheap and a number - Magicjack

Pros
Cheap, gives you a number, can port a number if you want, can get other area code numbers.
Cons
If you want to talk it is not always reliable. Need a fast internet service it would work much better.

I give this number out as my home phone. I hardly plug it in, takes the voice mail and emails it to me. I don't use it for calls I have a cell. Then i someone with something important I can call them back. I also use this number for credit card companies since they are always calling to sell some service. This way I never have to listen to them ring my phone. When it comes time to activate the new card from your home phone I plug it in and call in bingo it is activated.

Terrible service and customer support! - Magicjack

Pros
Cheap
Cons
Terrible quality, terrible support, hidden fees!

I have used magic jack for several years. From day one I've had terrible service (dropped calls, when calling my MJ number, can't hear the caller, trouble dialing out, terrible voice quality). I have replaced my magic Jack device, later upgraded to two newer devices and still no improvement. My internet connection of 25/5 is great too, which they insisted was slow. MJ device connected directly to the router.

I was very patient with the (chat) tech support which is most likely located outside of US and seemed to copy/paste pre typed responses that did not make any sense.

Don't Bother! - Magicjack

Pros
It all sounds great in theory...
Cons
It does not work in reality... if you have satellite internet

As soon as I decided to try this device I got a really bad taste in my mouth for the company because of the way the push-push-push the sales on you for extended service, rate plans, insurance, faster delivery.. non-stop. I said no to all of them and still got it within 3 days.

The worst service I have ever met! - Magicjack

Pros
Low price, terrible service!!!!
Cons
Terrible customer service. Don't trust their ad. Magic Jack never works if you don't plug it in the computer.

Magic Jack service is the worst I have ever met. My magicjack never works without to plug in the computer. I have to leave my computer on all the time in order to make the magicjack box works. I tried to call their custom service to fix that, but they were terrible and rude, and they can't fix the problem. My suggestion is DON'T BUY MAGIC JACK. It's awful!

Perfect for Home Phone and International - Magic Jack

Pros
Simple to connect, excellent sound and reliable, dirt cheap
Cons
Lack of customer service but what do you expect for $3/month, house calls by a service technician?

Have used Magic Jack Plus for about two years. Cannot understand the negative reports. I have Time-Warner as my IP; Magic Jack connected to the router and to existing house wiring at all times. Excellent sound quality on International, National and Local calls and 100% reliable. Very low rates to landlines outside North America. And if you live or travel in Europe (and probably anywhere in the World) with a Wi-Fi connected computer or router you can call the US at no extra cost.

I have used Magic Jack as my home phone for 3 years.

Pros
Cheap price, good service
Cons
Customer service was not the best, call quality sometimes not the best.

Over all I am very happy with my 2 Magic Jacks. I keep one in the house to use as my home phone and another in my mancave for my personal use. I use mine in conjunction with Google voice service and have found the combination of the 2 work extremely well. For the price of less than $20 a year, I don't think you can beat it. I believe that the call quality problems I occasionally experience is due to problems with my ISP and not the Magic Jack.

Never try to port out your number, impossible - Magic Jack

Pros
Low cost, you cannot beat that
Cons
Customer service is non existent. Cant port out a number without going through enough problems to make anyone pull their hair out.

The phone quality is horrible on calls. Always cuts out, even with high speed internet at 20+ Mbps. Then if you try to port out your number to another provider, the stall, create red herrings to chase down, then start a wild goose hunt, then they circle around and start it all over again. This is the most pitiful customer service experience I have ever had with anyone, and that includes cell phone and cable companies. I would definitely steer anyone away from this horrible company. It is just not worth the aggravation and clueless people on their end.
