IP Phones
IP phone arre telephone specifically made to work with VoIP technology. Unlike landline phones, which have phone jack ports, internet phones have Ethernet ports to transfer voice and data.
Traditional landline/analog telephones can also work with VoIP; analog phones will use an analog telephone adapter to convert the sound of your voice to a VoIP call.
IP phones vs. Adapters
With VoIP, an IP phone can replace a cordless home phone system or an entire office phone system (yes, IP phones have that many features).
An adapter can work well if you already have a conventional phone system that you use — or you don't want to replace your phone system.
Unfortunately, adapters for conventional phones can have bad sound quality with VoIP when compared to IP phones. Certain digital features, like caller ID, will not work with analog phones.
IP phones are a better long-term solution than adapters.

IP Phones at Home
IP phones replace your current phone system and eliminate the need to purchase adapters from some VoIP providers. Call quality is better and you use all VoIP features.
For example, if you have VoIP service with a complimentary second line, you will want a 2-line VoIP phone.
Softphones are also available with some plans. A softphone is a computer program that creates a virtual IP phone on your computer, as long as you have speakers and a microphone or a headset.
A stripped-down softphone will be free; a fully-featured softphone can cost anywhere from $5 to $50.
When looking at IP phones for your home, make sure that you check what the IP phone is intended for. Business-class IP phones are very expensive - and not necessarily what you need for home phone.
Internet Telephones for Business
IP phones can increase office productivity. Handsets, cordless phones, wireless phones, and headsets make office phones very versatile.
You can have classic desk phones along with an LCD display for caller ID. Some models now have a color LCD display and photo backgrounds, like the Cisco Unified IP Phone 7975G.
Wireless models are also available with advanced features. Cisco has phones, for example, that work with WiFi. Some wireless models come with a base and speaker phone and 15 hours of talk-time battery life.
Internet Phones with Conference Calling
There are some internet phones designed for conference calling, especially good for businesses. These telephones can pick up sounds across a room, perfect for a large meeting.
Conference call IP phones usually have a software interface that allows you to mute everyone but the person speaking. Conference call IP phones also usually have additional speaker sets to allow more people to contribute to the conversation.
Internet Phone Models and Pricing
Typical IP phone brands:
- Aastra
- Cisco (Linksys for residential)
- Nortel
- Polycom
- ZyXEL
- Snom
The prices on IP phones vary. Desktop phones usually range from $200-$300. Conference models can get up to $1000.
Proprietary Internet Telephones
Some service providers offer proprietary models of internet phones that only work within their VoIP network and with their features.
An internet phone service provider may offer you a special deal or discount to purchase their proprietary phones; if you ever need or want to switch VoIP service providers, you will likely have to purchase new internet phones.
For example, business service provider RingCentral has proprietary internet phones an organization can purchase designed specifically with its features and networks in mind. However, RingCentral also sells Cisco and Polycom phones with its service.
Long-term Investment
Of course, internet phones are compatible only with VoIP because they have Ethernet ports. It may be an investment to purchase phones for your office, but a worthwhile one if you have a long-term VoIP plan. If you think you’ll ever have landline service again, you may want adapters instead.
