Many, many VoIP providers use Asterisk. Because it is free, openly developed, and compatible with just about every VoIP type, Asterisk is a good choice for running an IP PBX phone system.

VoIP providers often use Asterisk to supply PBX, but many VoIP providers that don't sell PBX services are still compatible with the software on the user's end.

Other VoIP Service Providers Compatible with Asterisk

There are many more Asterisk-compatible providers than just these VoIP providers. If you want to run Asterisk as your own IP PBX, ask your provider if they are Asterisk-compatible.

More than likely, your VoIP provider is Asterisk-compatible, even if they do not offer support for Asterisk.

Asterisk is open source software for PBX. Asterisk is almost universal, in that it will work with virtually any type of PBX, including terminating to a traditional landline.

Asterisk acts as an IP PBX communications server. The software will run on Linux, Unix, OS X, and Windows machines. Basically, Asterisk can run on any computer, and the tech-savvy can even configure Asterisk software for use with home VoIP.

For your business, you can use Asterisk as an IP PBX. You will have to pay for VoIP service, but because Asterisk is digital, you will need less hardware. Asterisk is free, remember, so you will be saving money.

Configuring Asterisk is not a walk in the park, but Digium now offers online training. If you are technically-minded, you can probably set up a server with instruction in a few hours.
