Editorial Review

An established name in the telecommunications industry, Vonage provides powerful residential VoIP services that are affordable and easy to set up. They offer four home phone plans that are flexible and loaded with all the right features to let users stay in touch no matter where they are in the world.

Four Flexible, Feature-Packed Home Phone Plans

Residential VoIP customers can choose from four phone plans: Vonage North America, Vonage World, U.S. & Canada 400, and Vonage 3000 To Globe Philippines. For as low as $9.99 per month (for a full year contract), users can enjoy over 25 calling features (such as SimulRing, Three-Way Calling, Voicemail, and Call Forwarding) that come free in all plans. Users can also choose to add more features (such as a Dedicated Fax Line and Virtual Number) to enhance their plan.

Take Your VoIP Service with You

Vonage understands that people are increasingly on the go today. This is why all Vonage calling plans come with the Vonage Extensions App. This lets you make and receive calls using your smartphone as if you were at home.

Vonage is a money pit. I had it for a few years, just too lazy to cancel, I guess...the reception was never clear due to my internet connection (DSL), and I could not get it clear using filters, calling support, even by buying a new phone with a different frequency.
My service got canceled when I changed checking accounts. I called them to see about getting it reconnected, and they said I had to go through the whole sign-up process again. And the guy in customer service actually started yelling at me. I hung up on him.
I will NEVER use Vonage again...stay away from them.

The Vonage Companion is the worst software I've seen made for a Mac. Beyond it not working properly the service is really just the worst I've used. I use both Skype and Vonage, Skype comes in clear and crisp as does the output from what callers tell me. The Vonage is just choppy... I can't understand it, at first I thought it was the fact I had a Vonage Vtech phone so I switched to the Vonage companion and the issues are the same, I've contacted support prior to switching to the companion and they've tried to trouble shoot it... we did everything you could think of at first they would tell me it was my connection so I jumped my connection speed from 2 MB to 5 and then 10 to 12MB... unbelievable. I travel a lot and this is the same issue I'd get each place I was, different cities, different countries BUT I didnt write the post to talk about the service but rather the Vonage Companion, the Mac software for vonage. I don't understand why companies try to break into the Mac market and design shitty software you see on PC's most people are using Mac's because they just work, and the user interfaces are beautiful so when you get something that looks like the companion (in attempt to look different I suppose) it defeats the whole purpose. Ok so I'll look past the look of the app because I have Vonage, for now, but why in the world would the Vonage Companion turn my Volume up when you start the application? If I want the Volume turned up any higher I'll do it myself, if Vonage wants to remind me provide a visual reminder that I may want to turn it up, don't force it. Secondly the application wont close sometimes, I have to force close the application often... If I decide to turn off the computer the Vonage Application will prevent the computer from shutting down - "Get With The Program Vonage" - how much money do you guys make off your customers, you can't spring to have a decent app made for the Mac? I don't understand to much about VOIP so I don't know why Skypes service just works but I do know that you can make a Mac application that works.

I just cancelled my service with Vonage.  We've been pretty happy customers for about a year.  However, I am subscribed to their 500 min/mo service plan, and the rates went up from $15 to $18/mo.  Also, because I'm getting married (and seemed to be glued to the phone all the time now), I've been going over my minutes, so my phone cost $90 total for the last two months.  They charge 1.5/minute for minutes over 500.
The only reason I'm switching service is because I found a better deal.  For almost the same price as the 500/mo plan with Vonage, I can get unlimited calls through ITPvoip.com.  Although their 500/mo plan was very attractively priced ($10/mo), I went with unlimited because their overage charge is $2.5/minute, which would rack up fast.  Plus, I used a link to their site from VOIPreview.org, and it gave me two free months of service and a couple free features that normally are pay services.
The biggest pro we have enjoyed with Vonage is the router they offered.  It is very high quality, and we've always had a good signal quality from it.  Second biggest - getting our voicemails via email.  However, the voicemail feature is also offered through the new service.
The biggest con we've found was that sometimes during peak daytime hours, the phone will get tinny.  I can't really blame Vonage for this - it's our broadband provider that annoys me.  However, it's a definite downside to voip service, and I happened to have Vonage when it occurred.
I don't remember every having to deal with customer service, so I'm guessing I'm lucky.  We never ported a number or had any need for any bells or whistles, so the base services we used were excellent.  I would recommend Vonage (if it were cheaper!) to more technically inclined people - my fiance and I are both IT techs, so I think that helps with our positive experience with voip in general.
I really enjoyed the Vonage service, and I felt that they had a great array of services offered with the phone.  I hope we have an equally enjoyable experience with itpvoip, but without the cost.

I've been Vonage customer for 3+ years , and got some problems with cal quality at first, but problem was found at my cable provider (poor internet quality). Once fixed I haven't got any major issues with service. Some time Voip router will freeze and needed to be powered down for no less than 3 minutes in order to get working right.  This problem was fixed with installing power line conditioner (power adapter for VOIP device is really secetive). otherwise I like this service and will keep it. Customer service guys (in India) are sucks.  I love voicemail and forwarding options. Also web acount manangement are really great.  I would recommend this service, but you guys really need to make sure you have good stable high speed internet.

Great sound quality(with good internet) and many usefull options. Easy to navigate webmanagement console. Works pretty well.
Sometimes adapter freezes and needed to be powerd down for 3-4 min. Very sencetive power adapter. Overseas customer support is bad, but most problems can be fixed just by resetting the router.

The Skinny

When it comes to residential home phone service, Vonage offers three different plan types to suit your calling needs: Vonage North America, Vonage World, and U.S. & Canada 400. Vonage North America is their newest plan, and gives subscribers unlimited calling using either your home or mobile phone across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The Vonage World plan (their most popular offering) includes unlimited calling to more than 60 countries, on top of unlimited calling to mobiles in 10 countries. The U.S. & Canada 400 plan is catered towards residential customers who only need limited minutes, yet still want a VoIP-powered residential phone system. It comes with 400 included minutes, with a low per-minute charge thereafter.

The Rub

Vonage World is their most popular plan, and rightfully so: it meets all the needs of today's consumers for one low price. Choosing their one-year agreement promotion can help you secure only $9.99/mo. for the first six months, with $27.99/mo. thereafter. Plus, it also includes free shipping and free activation! The plan includes unlimited local and long distance calling on top of unlimited talk to more than 60 countries (see provider's site for details). Additionally, the Vonage World plan includes unlimited calling to mobile devices in 10 countries. And as always, calling other Vonage subscribers is free! The plan also includes 25+ features, the Vonage Extensions app, and a mobile app.

Their included feature set covers all bases, giving users the tools they need to effectively manage their calls, voicemails, and more. They have seniority in the VoIP business, and are very competitively priced with other providers in their market. They even let you port your existing number for free, or give you the option to select a new phone number from an area code you choose.
