Editorial Review

An award-winning provider of business and residential VoIP services, Ooma aims to deliver an exceptional calling experience with its cloud-based smart telephony system that surpasses ordinary phone service. At the heart of Ooma’s effort to redefine the home phone service landscape is Ooma Telo, a simple plug-and-play solution that enables residential users with a high-speed Internet connection to access affordable VoIP phone services. With Ooma Telo’s advanced hardware and software components and cloud services, residential users can ensure that every phone call is crystal clear, even under less than optimal Internet connections.

The provider also offers Ooma Office, an enterprise-grade phone service for small businesses. Aside from cloud-based telephony, Ooma also offers Internet security, office security, and other connected services at a fraction of the cost.

Cutting-edge Hardware and Software

Ooma Telo is specifically designed to allow residential users to experience superior home phone telephony service at a cost they can afford. Built with cutting-edge hardware, the Ooma Telo device seamlessly fits with a customer’s home network setup. In fact, the device’s advanced software technology is 20 times more powerful than the industry standard, which speaks to the service’s overall performance.

As a smart cloud-based communications platform, Ooma offers a lineup of innovative products and services including Bluetooth support, mobile phone calling with an iPhone or iPod touch, Google Voice Extensions, Ooma PureVoice, High Definition (HD) Voice, and voicemail transcription.

High Definition Voice Technology

Ooma is the first residential phone service provider that supports high-definition voice technology. With their HD Voice technology, Ooma Telo essentially doubles the audio frequencies transmitted during the call to deliver clearer, richer, and more natural sounding audio. Equipped with PureVoice HD technology, Ooma Telo ensures all calls are clear and reliable even under extreme conditions. Plus, this cutting-edge phone solution uses an advanced voice compression algorithm that lessens bandwidth by up to 60 percent when compared to standard VoIP technology.

Affordable Calling Plans

Ooma Telo is an innovative communication tool that provides free and low-cost calls to the US and Canada in addition to advanced cloud-based telephony services to its global customer base. This affordable cloud-based phone system offers two options for international calling: Standard Rate and Plan Rate. With the Ooma Telo Plan Rate option, users can use up to 1,000 minutes of international calling for under $10 per month. On the other hand, Ooma Telo’s Standard Rate offers no monthly fee, and most calls to 61 countries are typically lower than 1¢ per minute. With the Ooma Telo phone system, users will pay only basic fees and taxes as required by law. These vary by location due to state tax rates, but generally the cost may run between $3 and $4 per month. (To know exactly what the monthly Ooma Telo obligation would be in your region, you can input your zip code on the Ooma website.)

When making international calls with Ooma Telo, users have the option to pay as they go (on a per-minute basis) or they can choose to subscribe to the Ooma World Plan for unlimited calling to over 60 countries for only $17.99 a month. Customers also have the option to select the Ooma World Plan Plus and start calling to over 70 countries for only $25.99 per month. The Ooma Telo Premier service tier expands on the features that are provided in the Basic tier, giving residential users up to 25 additional premium calling features, all for a monthly price of $9.99. Ooma Telo Premier subscribers can enjoy the benefits of call blocking, a second phone number, instant second line, multi-ring, 3-way conference calling, voicemail forwarding, and more.

I have had Ooma service for about 10 years now. I had change from ATT to Ooma because of the price. I have saved a ton of money with this service, I have not had any problems with the service I receive. The sound is great no interference, static, or drop calls ever. When I first signed up for this service I had a problem with the box. I called customer service and they were able to walk me through the steps to resolve my problem. I have never had to call them again. Their service is great and would never go back to a land line phone again. They are so friendly and they are very professional. When you call them they make sure you are happy with the outcome and you never feel like they are in a rush to end the call. The quality of the services they provide are just as good if not better then other companies for a fraction of the cost. They reliability is great. All I have to say is try Ooma for yourself you will regret it. The only regret you will have is why didn't I try this sooner.

Overall I'm happy that I finally switched from AT&T to Ooma. The service has been rock solid, the call quality crystal clear. The biggest complaint I have is on the spam call filtering functionality. Most of my calls these days come with a CallerID showing "Some City, CA". Unfortunately Ooma's call blocking doesn't let you put a comma in the string to filter on. That makes it impossible to filter these calls. Their customer support, which has been fairly unhelpful compared to Googling for details, suggested filtering "contains 'CA'". I explained to them that's far too general a filter, and would filter calls from multiple members of my family.

I used to use Vonage - I left after getting frustrated on technical issues + price seemed a bit high. Have since taken their box globally with me when I travel + most recently the app to have true high quality VOIP service which gives me a local # for people to call me on anywhere I travel internationally. Top notch + easy to use. Setup initially was a bit of a learning curve because I'm a tech geek + ask a lot of questions. But this was 8 yrs ago, so am sure it's even desire to set up now as a new client.

Pricing service, availability + their iPhone app are easy + work consistently for me.
initial set up (8 yrs ago) was tougher than I hoped. Technology has since advanced, so I'm sure it's even easier to port in a phone number and use their services. I do recommend.

Ooma is the best thing one can get if you are looking for pricing and call quality. I was skeptical going with a non-land line which is what I needed and Ooma Telo was what I purchased. The service was great and the actual performance of the Telo was great as well. Saved a lot as a plus.

The Ooma Telo is a great value. The low cost is complemented by the clear quality of the calls and excellent reliability of the product. Working from home is easy with Telo and far better than spotty cell service (no dropped calls, weak connections, etc.). I have tried many VOIP services over the years and Ooma is the best.

Low cost, reliable product and service, great features (call forwarding, caller ID, blocking, etc.).

Absolutely worth every penny!! If you have a "package" from the cable company ditch it now!! Get an Ooma Telo, buy an Arris modem and a wireless router. You'll have $30+/mo on phone and $12/mo on "equipment rental. If you can get by with streaming services or you live near broadcast TV (buy a $30 antenna - you'll be surprised) the you can knock your monthly bill down to around $45 for internet only. No endless rental fees for a wireless modem (that also allows other customers to use your internet!!), no phone fees ($5/mo in government taxes - charged by Ooma - but that's inevitable), no cable TV fees. I feel sorry for the people who get halfway there then spend $65/mo on internet!! Buy a modem and router - you'll be saving $20/mo unless than 6 months (paying for the equipment cost). I'm getting off topic - Ooma is key to having a "landline phone" at almost no cost - remember, unless you have an actual phone company providing your phone service (does that exist?!?) your cable company is also routing your calls through the internet. They just charge you for it! Voicemail notification, in app smart phone calling as if you are on your landline, amazing HD3 handsets - this is a steal and will save you money for YEARS to come.

Reliable, many features including 2nd line, built-in voicemail and notification, ability to connect to 4G networks with adapter and have power back-up with optional accessories (I have yet to find out if the cable internet works during a blackout - never tried). Security potential, design, quality and number porting (keep the same number you've had forever!).
Only cons are not cons at this price point but things you might want to consider adding to your system if necessary. No built-in battery, ummm, yeah, that's about it. Ooma is the top of the best of the home VoIP solutions. You CANNOT go wrong.
