Editorial Review

An award-winning provider of business and residential VoIP services, Ooma aims to deliver an exceptional calling experience with its cloud-based smart telephony system that surpasses ordinary phone service. At the heart of Ooma’s effort to redefine the home phone service landscape is Ooma Telo, a simple plug-and-play solution that enables residential users with a high-speed Internet connection to access affordable VoIP phone services. With Ooma Telo’s advanced hardware and software components and cloud services, residential users can ensure that every phone call is crystal clear, even under less than optimal Internet connections.

The provider also offers Ooma Office, an enterprise-grade phone service for small businesses. Aside from cloud-based telephony, Ooma also offers Internet security, office security, and other connected services at a fraction of the cost.

Cutting-edge Hardware and Software

Ooma Telo is specifically designed to allow residential users to experience superior home phone telephony service at a cost they can afford. Built with cutting-edge hardware, the Ooma Telo device seamlessly fits with a customer’s home network setup. In fact, the device’s advanced software technology is 20 times more powerful than the industry standard, which speaks to the service’s overall performance.

As a smart cloud-based communications platform, Ooma offers a lineup of innovative products and services including Bluetooth support, mobile phone calling with an iPhone or iPod touch, Google Voice Extensions, Ooma PureVoice, High Definition (HD) Voice, and voicemail transcription.

High Definition Voice Technology

Ooma is the first residential phone service provider that supports high-definition voice technology. With their HD Voice technology, Ooma Telo essentially doubles the audio frequencies transmitted during the call to deliver clearer, richer, and more natural sounding audio. Equipped with PureVoice HD technology, Ooma Telo ensures all calls are clear and reliable even under extreme conditions. Plus, this cutting-edge phone solution uses an advanced voice compression algorithm that lessens bandwidth by up to 60 percent when compared to standard VoIP technology.

Affordable Calling Plans

Ooma Telo is an innovative communication tool that provides free and low-cost calls to the US and Canada in addition to advanced cloud-based telephony services to its global customer base. This affordable cloud-based phone system offers two options for international calling: Standard Rate and Plan Rate. With the Ooma Telo Plan Rate option, users can use up to 1,000 minutes of international calling for under $10 per month. On the other hand, Ooma Telo’s Standard Rate offers no monthly fee, and most calls to 61 countries are typically lower than 1¢ per minute. With the Ooma Telo phone system, users will pay only basic fees and taxes as required by law. These vary by location due to state tax rates, but generally the cost may run between $3 and $4 per month. (To know exactly what the monthly Ooma Telo obligation would be in your region, you can input your zip code on the Ooma website.)

When making international calls with Ooma Telo, users have the option to pay as they go (on a per-minute basis) or they can choose to subscribe to the Ooma World Plan for unlimited calling to over 60 countries for only $17.99 a month. Customers also have the option to select the Ooma World Plan Plus and start calling to over 70 countries for only $25.99 per month. The Ooma Telo Premier service tier expands on the features that are provided in the Basic tier, giving residential users up to 25 additional premium calling features, all for a monthly price of $9.99. Ooma Telo Premier subscribers can enjoy the benefits of call blocking, a second phone number, instant second line, multi-ring, 3-way conference calling, voicemail forwarding, and more.

You want to cut your hardline chord for good and save some cash at the same time ? Ooma Telo is for you. I had to keep an hard line for my children and didn’t want to pay each month an amount way too high from my cable service provider. Ooma’s IP phone service will make you save some money each month and the installation couldn’t be easier than it is right now. Also, you’ll save on long distance call since it use your internet connection. Add to this that their customer service is A1 and you have the complet solution to cut your hard line chord.

Easy installation Cost saving Great sound quality
No cons seriously. It works as promised

Having a voip phone is a good land line. I have a cell phone, but sometimes I prefer to use a land line with my regular old fashioned plug in phone. It's nice to have one in my home and to be able to use the multiple handsets that I can spread throughout my house.

It's a land line. It's convenient.
Sometimes I have connection problems using the phone but that is probably due to my lower priced internet plan.

I first heard about Ooma from a neighbor who was giving me some hints to save money when I retired. What a surprise Ooma turned out to be. Not only am I saving over $40 a month, I also have two phone numbers and my land-line number tethered to my mobile number so both ring and I never miss a call no matter where I am. One of the many features that I especially love is that the Ooma app lists every call than comes in to both numbers and you have the ability to block that number forever more. The number of SPAM calls that I get now are almost zero. I only wish their customer service guys would actually listen to my problem instead of telling me it couldn't be done, but that was too small to discourage me from recommending Ooma to all my friends and family. Give them a try and see for yourself. You won't be sorry.

Price Features Quality of sound
Suddenly one feature that I loved quit working and I repeatedly called customer service who basically told me that it wasn't their problem.

Ooma is an absolutely wonderful value. The service is flawless. We love being able to retain a home phone and not being dependent solely on cellphones. We had an issue with our first Ooma Telo. One quick call and they sent out a new one promptly with no problems, free shipping, and free return shipping. Terrific customer service. When we first told people about Ooma they thought “just paying taxes” was too good to be true, but nope this company is absolutely the exception to the rule. We are so happy we switched over, just wish we had done it sooner.

The biggest pro is the price. We pay five dollars and change for the local and state taxes and fees. That’s it no cost for the service. The quality is five stars. The customer service is impeccable.
I can honestly say there are no cons.

Been an OOMA customer for well over a decade, if not even 15 years. It started out with the local phone company wanting $50/mo to have the lowest phone plan after their taxes and fees. The Ooma was a no-brainer for under $5/mo in FCC fees. The calls are clear and I love being able to access my VM's on my phone or online.

Affordable. Easy to use. Clear calls
Wish Spam call blocking was included with product without having to subscribe to the Premiere service

I first installed VOIP service about 2002, but reevaluated my needs about 5 years ago and switched to Ooma at that time. I already had backup power for my network and so was able to configure my Ooma Telo so that I would still have telephone service (with one POTS phone) as long as my internet provider was up. Since then, I've had excellent uptime for phone service, outstanding call clarity, and saved about $400 a year versus my prior VOIP provider. There is also a free app for making/receiving WiFi calls on a cell phone. I have Premier service which gives me the features I need and I have also replaced my previous wireless home security system (installed about 1995) with Ooma home security, updating my sensors (smoke/water/intrusion) and multiplying the savings versus the previous monitored service (Ooma also provides security monitoring, but I have not opted to use it). The security system is controlled/monitored with a separate smart phone app. [There is also an Internet Security option available for the Telo which I have not used.] So in addition to the great phone service (which can include a second line for voice or fax), you can leverage the Telo to get a lot of additional value.

excellent voice quality excellent reliability lower costs
When I broke my cell phone, couldn't turn off the security system when I got home!

Ooma is reliable and inexpensive. Customer service works hard to address any concerns and creatively comes up with solutions. I've been able to transfer locations seamlessly and continue using the same number. Porting has been straightforward. Having the ability to access voice mails online and manage my Ooma via the Dashboard has been quite useful. The call log feature allows me to track calls and provide historical documentation. I'm planning to keep Ooma going for a while as a replacement to the expensive landline option. Overall, I'm pleased with Ooma and plan to continue using it to facilitate my communication. Clearly, I'm a fan. I haven't explored some of the additional options that Ooma offers, but use the basic features at the lowest cost. This has served my purposes very well.

Reliable and good value.
Requires good and consistent wifi signal. My first location did not have that and it caused a number of reception issues and required rebooting frequently.

I didn’t want a high maintenance system and Ooma provides one you don’t have to worry about at all. I rarely even login, it just works. As part of their marketing budget they have simple activities to earn gift cards. I’ve earned $50 of Amazon cards so that’s cool too. The pricing of the Ooma is very reasonable if not negligible. The hardware which you do buy up front is durable. I think mine is a decade old and counting, not problems. It just works. That sums up the whole service - it just works! My biggest pain with a landline was constant spam calls. When I got the Ooma, I secured my new phone number, activated the black lists and my spam calls went to zero.

Easy to use, custom blacklists, spam calls disappeared for me. Low cost
Up front device purchase required but it’s not that big of a deal.
