magicJack Reviews

magicJack is an extremely cheap VoIP provider that works by using your existing Internet connection to make and receive calls. magicJack provides a plug-and-play device (like a USB drive) that you can connect to your computer or high-speed modem to start making local and long-distance calls. You can use magicJack for as little as $19.95/year per line.

With the newest magicJack Plus system, you don't have to have your computer on at all times in order to receive a call.

Is magicJack worth it?

We recommend that anyone interested in buying a magicJack read the user reviews here first.

If you need this to just make calls and receive a call here and there its not a bad product. If you need a reliable voicemail and call log so you can get back to people then this is not for you.

The downloadable app resembles my phones home screen so it is very user friendly.
Voicemail is hit or miss, call history only shows outgoing calls so if someone calls you and does not leave a message you will never know. I wanted to use this line for a small business but every time someone calls my number they hear a magic jack commercial as the phone is ringing. Contacted customer service and spent hours on chat with them and still have no resolve.

OK, this is my entire LIVECHAT with one of their operators...
Please wait for a site operator to respond.
You are now chatting with 'Liz'
Your Issue ID for this chat is ...
Liz: Hello, how may I help you?
Wayne: Hi there, Liz. I just received the MagicJack Plus today from your company and not only did I not receive the 6 free months added to the end of my 5-yr membership but also it doesn't have my phone number attached to it.
Liz: Hi Wayne
Wayne: I tried calling my girlfriend's number from it and it left this number on her caller ID 434-282-0313
Liz: May I have your Magicjack phone number please?
Wayne: 727-
Liz: Thank you for waiting. I'll be with you in just a moment.
Wayne: ok
Liz: Thank you for waiting.
Liz: may I know where is your device connected?
Wayne: right now it's plugged into my USB
Liz: as I have checked it here, there is no magicjack plus registered in your account,.
Liz: it seems that it is not yet registered.
Wayne: but normally we're going to plug this into the wall outlet... I had it plugged into the wall outlet since earlier today and it also gets extremely hot with a burnt smell.
Liz: Do you see the Click Here to Register on the left option on the pad?
Wayne: ok, now I see it
Liz: All right, please click on that and register the device to your existing account
Wayne: so am I registering a new device or replace a current magicjack
Liz: and you may click on " Replace Magicjck" to transfer your phone number as well as your remaining license to your new magicjack plus device
Liz: register it as to replace a current magicjack so that your license and number will be transferred to new device
Liz: however your old device will expire, but you can still activate it
Wayne: ok, another problem I had with the old MagicJack is that it never rang... very seldom it would ring even though it was always plugged in
Liz: do you have the dial pad open on your screen?
Wayne: people would complain that it would just go right into voicemail
Wayne: yes
Liz: do you also see your phone number on top of the pad ?
Wayne: yes, now I do
Liz: now please try calling your magicjack number from another phone and check if it works
Wayne: ok, it rang on my laptop, but not sure if it would work with a phone plugged into it
Liz: All right, you may try connecting it to your router and check if it also work
Wayne: I also refreshed the page and it shows my device renew date is still 2/20/2015... don't I get an additional 6 months?
Liz: since you chose to replace your magicjack during registration, you r phone number as well as your remaining license was transferred to the new one however your free 6 months of license has been forfeited since you chose to replace your device, you can only get the free 6 months of you chose to register it as a new device, however your remaining license from your old device cannot be transferred.
Wayne: I did not choose to replace my device, I was offered a special deal to existing customers to upgrade and get an additional 6 months.
Wayne: Order No.: TS... Reference ID: 4...
Liz: thank you
Liz: Please wait while I check that for you
Wayne: This is the whole paragraph... I have persuaded the CEO and President of magicJack to offer the Public the lowest price ever for a magicJack, but also to offer an amazingly lower price to only you, our loyal customer. We want everybody in the world using magicJack and we believe the best way to make this happen is for YOU to tell others about the amazing voice quality only available with the new 2014 magicJack. For a limited time and only through this exclusive e-mail offer, the CEO has agreed to sell the 2014 new magicJack PLUS for just $29.95 to you, which even includes six months of FREE telephone service. This comes with a no question 30 day money back Free Trial.
Liz: I'm sorry for the delay. I'll be right with you.
Liz: thank you for the information.
Liz: However, during registration you did chose the second option which is provided below:
Liz: http://aid.magicjack.com/TransferService.PNG
Wayne: that's only because you instructed me to click on replace the device so I can put my phone number onto it... I figured that since it was coming directly from MagicJack that it already had my number on it.
Wayne: If I am not getting my free 6 months then I will send this back and demand a full refund. I did not need a replacement but chose to for the upgrade that including the 6 more months of airtime.
Liz: I understand however both option I provided above will enable you to have the same number but only the second option will have the option to transfer your license to the new one
Wayne: I understand what you are saying but since this was an email offer for LOYAL CUSTOMERS to upgrade their device for the 29.95 which even includes six months of FREE telephone service then that's what I fully EXPECTED.
Wayne: why can't you just add the 6 more months on your computer and we can end this conversation?
Liz: Unfortunately, that is not possible Wayne because that options it not provided or available here in our end.
Wayne: then I guess now is a good time to get a manager or email me a return label for this device
Liz: I understand your concern but do you wish to return your device?
Wayne: yes, I didn't need to spend the total of 41.93 on this when the old one was still sufficient enough to make calls
Liz: okay..
Liz: you may click on the link below abd fill in the return fomr
Liz: return form**
Liz: Click here
Liz: just enter your order number and email address then click Search button and click Submit RMA
Wayne: ok
Liz: Are well all set today?
Wayne: yep, thanks
Liz: since you wish to return the device back to our facility, would you like to transfer your license to the old one?
Wayne: yes
Wayne: doesn't MagicJack pay for the return shipping?
Liz: Okay, hang on
Liz: Thank you for waiting.
Wayne: It's stating that I need a MagicJack subscription renewal code to reactivate my old device.
Liz: no it doesn't Wayne and you are responsible for return shipping charges to our return processing facility. Also please know that you will not be charge of anything for return the device since it is still under the free trial and yes you have to reactivate the old device for you to be able to make and receive calls..
Wayne: ok fine, I need the renewal code
Liz: unfortunately, you do not have the renewal code Wayne however you may select the renewal plan and complete your order
Wayne: I don't want a new plan since I'm already on an existing plan ending in 2015... I just want to reactivate the old device.
Liz: I will be right with you.
Liz: Thank you for waiting.
Liz: I understand your concern Wayne but since you will return the new device, the license comes with the new one and cannot be transferred back.
Wayne: YOU DID NOT GIVE ME A LICENCE FOR THE NEW ONE... remember?????? I am an EXISTING CUSTOMER and did not receive my free 6 months on the new device so I'm just transferring everything back to the old device.
Wayne: I have 5 FULL YEARS PAID FOR so I am an existing customer with a working device... your upgrade wasn't as promised so just give me the code.
Liz: One moment please...
Liz: You are correct on that Wayne and you re returning your new device but as of this time we do not have a feature yet to transfer back your license
Liz: and I understand but I believe that I have already provided you all the information needed; I will end this conversation now, if you any other concerns in the future, please do not hesitate to chat us back. We are always here to assist you. Thank you.
Since we haven't heard from you, we must release this chat. Please click here should you need further assistance: www.magicJack.com/techchat

When customer service can not help you on their chat they end the session. The customer service people know the english words, however they do not know the meaning of the words. I have tried for sixteen months to solve the poor voice quality, dropped calls, callers not being able to leave messages, way to many number I can not call, and poor customer services. When I want to transfer my service because they have not lived up to what their contract said they would they would not give me a refund they want to charge me $30.00 to close my account. Do not use magic jack.

The price
When the phone rings you can not answer the caller. Way to many dropped calls. Voice quality is bad. Customer service is very bad.

I have family in Europe so I bought $25 in international minutes so I could call on special occasions ie. birthdays & holidays. When I went to use it I got a message saying I needed to purchase international minutes. I contacted customer service on chat and they said my purchase expired after 6 months!! Why? I paid for it, it should be mine. THEY STOLE MY MONEY!

$19.99/year
Bad customer service: They REFUSE to issue a refund. Oh!...and just so you know; whatever your issue is, it's your fault!!! Their customer service "chatter" kills you with FAKE kindness, which is almost more insulting.

I bought this device for me and my elderly mother (80 years) to make our bill less and our lives happier. This device does just the opposite. Customer service didn't resolve my problems, their billing came at a surprise. They didn't want to reimburse my money and my subscription was a couple of days into renewal. Stealing my money if you ask me. Purchased my device at Wal-mart with the understanding I would only pay 19.95 a year, prices went up to 29.95 a year and you have to pay that extra 10.00 dollars to keep your phone number or your up a creek..... My service was completely interrupted with dropped calls, bad connections and not to mention that little voice reminding you to complete a process, why not an email or a letter. To end up with problems like this, I'm going to a competitor; this was just my first year of service..

No monthly bills
Customer Service help really doesn't adjust any mistakes made in pricing or service and it's always your fault. Customer service doesn't resolve any issues you have, they have absolutely no power, your just wasting your breath. 0 advertisement, prices change with out notice, problems with device and computer compatibility, interrupted service messages while on the line, line isn't clear, dropped calls. Customer Service has no direct number.

I payed 60.00 in radio shack have all the attachments to plug it in the wall, and I do not recommend this service. It was not very well thought out and the only thing it lets me do is send faxes. Other than that it's not worth the money and it is very troublesome. You can't use your computer and be on the phone at the same time it makes you cut in and out it also freezes my computer up all the time I am really aggravated because of this and afraid that if I plug it into the wall it will catch my house on fire because it does over heat! So I leave it in my computer .

IT LET'S ME SEND FAXES
It cuts in and out,has static, overheats when you plug it into the wall, hangs up and goes back to dial tone, people call in and can't hear you after several attempts,it has cost me 60.00 and a lot of missed calls and aggravation.

My main problem is I am unable to complete a call, and this is an intermittent problem and very aggravating.
Other problem is that it will connect with but then cut in and out when the other party is talking.
Another problem is the so called tech support does not know anything and are just giving their stock answers.

cheap
Will not complete calls and jumps back to dial tone. Tech support, (if you want to call it that), said I needed to download a firmware upgrade. I did and it did not help.

Bought one of these units for our house in AZ. $39.95 at Walgreens. Upgraded to the 5 year plan. Started using the device, when suddenly could op longer call forward. Managed to email MJ and was given a link to use call forwarding, and was told it was being reviewed. Ridiculous (I told them). That was one of it's few features, and the reason to get it. Fast forward a couple of years, and was feeling that it was a good buy. Decided I would do away with my landline in Canada. Signed up online to order one. Went from $60 for 5 years in the USA to suddenly $178.00 for 5 years, with rush shipping. 2 weeks later no MJ+. Contacted them trying to find my MJ+. Was told that there is no rush shipping to Canada, that if I had read their blog, I would have known that they ship USPS, and when it gets to the border, they don't know what happens to it. I can (and do) have goods shipped to Canada in 2 - 3 days. Any other company would send it via FedEx or UPS. Not these robbers! I had already booked a holiday, so went away, and when I got back to Canada, found the MJ+ in the regular mail. Plugged it in as per instructions, and although I got a dial tone, no software downloaded, and no instructions on how to get it. Never could get hold of 'Live Chat'. It must be just a ruse. They would send BS stuff after a couple of hours and state that if I didn't respond within 1 hour, then I had to accept everything they said. I guess they think that we sit around waiting for them. Tried to have my local number ported to MJ+, but was told they could not do it in Canada. Funny how any other company in Canada can do it. There is just no customer service with magicJack. I finally got a RMA from them, boxed it up, and couriered it back to them. I will be going with a different voip provider in Canada.

Initial cost proposed to be good.
Missing a bunch of features that should be considered standard. No customer service.

We had magicJack Plus for one year and used in WI and FL with great success. No problems with sound or call connection. It was great; would have recommended to anyone. Then, I forgot the mJ device when we returned to WI from FL this spring, so I called and got another device shipped to home for under $11. Great! When device was connected, we started w/the usual great service for severall hours. Then suddenly, device wouldn't work. Outgoing calls rang busy; incoming calls went to voice mail. Unplugging device for a short time and replugging worked to reestablish connection. Sometimes, connection worked for a day or two; at other times, only for a hour. We never know when/if we can make or receive calls. Customer service is cumbersome. We called customer service over a dozen times. Each time it was the same drill...over and over, each time with a different representative. Each time, we were subsequently referred to a Top 10% Service Tec. Each time the connection would work (we told them it would because all we have to do is unplug/replug the unit to get it to work). Eventually, they just told us all indications are we have a great connection so they just hung up ("Opps, connection has been lost"message) We give up!

Great price, sound and clarity when it worked. Didn't notice difference from traditional landline. First mJ plus device was reliable; easy to install. Easily transported and great for travel. It was so unnoticed, I forgot to unplug and take it with us when we came home after last trip. Called mJ and they sent new device quickly.
Unreliable! First device was great; worked everywhere. Second device does not work all the time to make/receive calls; we never know if it's working or not. Poor customer service.

    The Skinny

    magicJack Revealed

    What is magicJack?

A magicJack is a small device that allows you to make Internet phone calls for cheap prices.

As of 2016, magicJack Express costs $39.95 plus shipping and handling. You get 3 months of free unlimited calling to the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. Additional years cost $35.

    How does magicJack work?

One of magicJack's top selling points is its ease of installation.

    1. Plug your phone into the magicJack
    2. Plug the magicJack into your computer
    3. Start making calls

Is there a special magicJack phone?

Nope! The magicJack device is what's known in the industry as an analog telephone adapter (ATA). You won't need a special phone in order to use magicJack.

What do you think of magicJack?

Many users have had a variety of issues with magicJack (as evidenced by the reviews). However, here are a couple of advantages of magicJack:

    1. Lowest Monthly Rates

Setting aside the fact that the first 6 months of phone service with magicJack are absolutely free, monthly rates are available for as little as $3.00 per month. Prices like that are extremely hard to complain about, and even some of our most scathing magicJack reviews still rate magicJack with 5 stars in the price category.

    2. Cheap Equipment

Any way you slice it, $39.95 is a great price to pay for the complete setup of a VoIP phone service that uses your existing phones. Other VoIP companies require specialized IP phones that can cost over $100, and an ATA adapter alone is often more than $50.

Even if the device runs into a problem and needs to be replaced, the low cost takes most of the sting out of a new purchase. In fact, with the money you'll save with magicJack's low monthly rate, the device practically pays for itself.

    3. Easy to Use

MagicJack is designed for people who have never heard of VoIP in the first place, and want a simple plug-and-play device that works right away. That's exactly what magicJack offers, and the new magicJack PLUS offers even more options. The old device required a constant connection to a computer to work, but the new one only needs to do so once to register. After that, just plug it into the wall and feel free to shut the computer off. The video below outlines how to use magicJack without a computer.

Previously the magicJack software was been reported by some as very difficult to remove. MagicJack software now comes with an easier to access uninstall option, so this point is no longer valid.

    MagicJack Customer Service

Unfortunately, magicJack does not have a customer service hotline. That means that the only way to resolve a service issue is through a high-traffic chat room, which occasionally has a slow response time as a result. Fortunately, the device is easy to install, so you'll likely never need the support. If you run into trouble, our best advice is to be patient with the chat, and see if the issue lies with your router configuration or Internet speed in the meantime.

If everything checks out and the chat system seems frustrating, just try doing something else for a while and wait for the chat system to get back to you. You can watch one of the many fan-made YouTube videos for magicJack support, try one of the links below to see if your issue is answered there, or even take care of checking your email while you wait. Sometimes, the best option is to simply wait a few hours for the peak traffic to die down, so that the support team has more time to dedicate to your needs. Either way, spending an hour or two researching and fixing any issues with the magicJack adapter is definitely worth the amount of money that you're saving with .

    Third-party magicJack Support

There are also some helpful blogs out there on the web that cover how to use magicJack if you still encounter trouble.

    Overall Analysis

In the end, and despite the issues that customers raise about magicJack service, we feel that magicJack offers a very low priced Residential VoIP service, especially for someone new to VoIP. However, there are a lot of negative customer reviews you should take into consideration. The extremely low monthly rate for unlimited phone calls is impossible to ignore, and the ease of installation further makes the case that magicJack's barebones VoIP service is one of the best in the industry.!

Don't take our word for it. We've got over 100 magicJack reviews for real magicJack customers. See what magicJack users have to say.

If you have used magicJack, here's you should do: Write a review. We could use your voice on our website.
