magicJack Reviews

magicJack is an extremely cheap VoIP provider that works by using your existing Internet connection to make and receive calls. magicJack provides a plug-and-play device (like a USB drive) that you can connect to your computer or high-speed modem to start making local and long-distance calls. You can use magicJack for as little as $19.95/year per line.

With the newest magicJack Plus system, you don't have to have your computer on at all times in order to receive a call.

An absolutely rubbish company. Try and dial any of their customer service
numbers - THEY DON"T WORK!
So your only choice is live chat - and they'll just close the chat on you to
get you gone. Took 3 weeks of contacting customer service to get my number
out of their hands so I could transfer it to another provider.

I have used MajicJack for over 5 years and love it. However when you call
them (844)866-2442) the customer support staff have horrendous english and
are very hard to understand. They tell me that Jan 2, 2015 an email was sent
to all subscribers informing them of a new fee that they will be charging. It
is for a "phone number service". I was told to read the subscriber agreement.
I asked for a copy of this email and was informed that one could not be
provided. No where in the document does it tell you about this new "fee". My
subscription is good until August 2023, but i need to renew the number each
year for $10., and now have to pay $110 for a "phone number service". Given
they are sneaky bastards, I am pissed off and thinking about throwing it
away..

With so many negative reviews, I thought I'd write a fair one. I have had
magic jack service for over 6 years, I initially took the plunge because my
brother had the service and was happy with it. Magic Jack is only going to
be as good as your internet service. I have high-speed, reliable internet
through Atlantic Broadband and I have great phone service with Magic Jack.
It is not perfect, it does take 1-2 seconds to connect (so don't say "hello"
to fast or the other person won't hear you). I would say that about 2-3% of
the calls have static for no known reason (hang up and call back and it's
usually fine). I really wish I could block specific numbers on Magic Jack,
but it is not an available feature. The call forwarding does work really
well though. My service is always reliable (until the devices start to go
bad- see below).
My biggest complaint about Magic Jack is that the devices never last more
than 2 years. I purchased my 3rd device (Magic Jack Express) last year. My
first two devices started overheating and dropping calls after about 2 years.
You need to count that into the overall cost of using Magic Jack. I don't
use many of the features available, I just use it as a house phone and
occasionally forward calls to my cell phone.
Overall I am satisfied with Magic Jack for the price, I wouldn't have kept it
for 6 years if I wasn't satisfied!

Cost, reliability of service, call-forwarding
Devices quit working after 2 years, no call blocking feature.

Do not recommend this ..The quality of line service static and noise is
terrible.. On either end people can not hear.. To receive support you can
wait 30-40 minutes only to be cut off saying call back later. Price may be
reasonable but the service and the quality of transmission is unacceptable.

$30 charge to port out and $13.95 warranty replacement charge after only 3 weeks

I started having trouble with my Magicjack after only three weeks. You can
not get service over the phone, only chat. The first day I tried, I typed
with them for SEVEN HOURS with only a 45 minute break. They only fixed some
of the problems but still would not authorize a replacement. After three or
four more hours and several unsuccessful attempts to fix it they finally said
they would replace it if I paid $13.95. When I ported my number out from them
they charged me an additional $30 plus tax to port out to another carrier.
Instead of Magiicjack, buy a Obi voice modem and use Google voice for free
(except for the port in fee)

You better be tech savvy and know how to research and set this up, I had no problem but illiterate people might run into some snags unfortunately

Excellent price, paid for 5 years at a good discount, unit malfunctioned once and was sent a new unit for free - no questions asked
For the first few years we kept getting charged a port charge every year - this is a one time charge which they were charging us annually as an annual charge - bad bad, I kept reporting them, didn't do any good, then when I paid for the 5 years in advance I never seen another porting fee - good good

Conference call numbers are not free (non toll free numbers).
There are certain other US numbers are also not free. They will ask to add prepaid balance.

1) permanent noise, 2) interrupting voice sound, 3) additional payment for normally free numbers, 4) no customer service over the phone - only by chat, 5) no forwarding calls thru the phone only thru internet, 6) if you forwarded calls from your land phone to your cell you cannot call from your cell to your land phone.

Save your money. In this case, you get what you pay for! They charge you yearly to import your number. Then when you decide to go with a different provider, they charge you a fine for importing thje number to the new carrier. Their customer service is awful! The sound quality is poor, and there is a delay whenever you answer a call. You can't hear the caller for several seconds. You lose service frequently, more often than you have service.

I can't think of any pros.

Fine if it works, but often does not. No phone support/Windows only.

It all was said above. Great if it works, does not too often. No phone support, online chat only. You have to have a computer with Windows in order to configure/update the Magic Jack.
Technical support makes you do the same troubleshooting over and over again, most times with no satisfactory results.
I would have loved to keep the unit, but it is just aggravating with all the interruptions.
Some do not have this issue, well, try it for yourself.

Works excellent (when working), great voice quality, often full duplex (you can hear the other person while talking), price of course!
You all know 'Error 23' I bet. Connection is always lost after power outage, most times everything has to be re-configured. No phone support. You have to have a Windows (infected) computer to update the Magic Jack.

    The Skinny

    magicJack Revealed

    What is magicJack?

A magicJack is a small device that allows you to make Internet phone calls for cheap prices.

As of 2016, magicJack Express costs $39.95 plus shipping and handling. You get 3 months of free unlimited calling to the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. Additional years cost $35.

    How does magicJack work?

One of magicJack's top selling points is its ease of installation.

    1. Plug your phone into the magicJack
    2. Plug the magicJack into your computer
    3. Start making calls

Is there a special magicJack phone?

Nope! The magicJack device is what's known in the industry as an analog telephone adapter (ATA). You won't need a special phone in order to use magicJack.

What do you think of magicJack?

Many users have had a variety of issues with magicJack (as evidenced by the reviews). However, here are a couple of advantages of magicJack:

    1. Lowest Monthly Rates

Setting aside the fact that the first 6 months of phone service with magicJack are absolutely free, monthly rates are available for as little as $3.00 per month. Prices like that are extremely hard to complain about, and even some of our most scathing magicJack reviews still rate magicJack with 5 stars in the price category.

    2. Cheap Equipment

Any way you slice it, $39.95 is a great price to pay for the complete setup of a VoIP phone service that uses your existing phones. Other VoIP companies require specialized IP phones that can cost over $100, and an ATA adapter alone is often more than $50.

Even if the device runs into a problem and needs to be replaced, the low cost takes most of the sting out of a new purchase. In fact, with the money you'll save with magicJack's low monthly rate, the device practically pays for itself.

    3. Easy to Use

MagicJack is designed for people who have never heard of VoIP in the first place, and want a simple plug-and-play device that works right away. That's exactly what magicJack offers, and the new magicJack PLUS offers even more options. The old device required a constant connection to a computer to work, but the new one only needs to do so once to register. After that, just plug it into the wall and feel free to shut the computer off. The video below outlines how to use magicJack without a computer.

Previously the magicJack software was been reported by some as very difficult to remove. MagicJack software now comes with an easier to access uninstall option, so this point is no longer valid.

    MagicJack Customer Service

Unfortunately, magicJack does not have a customer service hotline. That means that the only way to resolve a service issue is through a high-traffic chat room, which occasionally has a slow response time as a result. Fortunately, the device is easy to install, so you'll likely never need the support. If you run into trouble, our best advice is to be patient with the chat, and see if the issue lies with your router configuration or Internet speed in the meantime.

If everything checks out and the chat system seems frustrating, just try doing something else for a while and wait for the chat system to get back to you. You can watch one of the many fan-made YouTube videos for magicJack support, try one of the links below to see if your issue is answered there, or even take care of checking your email while you wait. Sometimes, the best option is to simply wait a few hours for the peak traffic to die down, so that the support team has more time to dedicate to your needs. Either way, spending an hour or two researching and fixing any issues with the magicJack adapter is definitely worth the amount of money that you're saving with .

    Third-party magicJack Support

There are also some helpful blogs out there on the web that cover how to use magicJack if you still encounter trouble.

    Overall Analysis

In the end, and despite the issues that customers raise about magicJack service, we feel that magicJack offers a very low priced Residential VoIP service, especially for someone new to VoIP. However, there are a lot of negative customer reviews you should take into consideration. The extremely low monthly rate for unlimited phone calls is impossible to ignore, and the ease of installation further makes the case that magicJack's barebones VoIP service is one of the best in the industry.!

Don't take our word for it. We've got over 100 magicJack reviews for real magicJack customers. See what magicJack users have to say.
