magicJack Reviews

magicJack is an extremely cheap VoIP provider that works by using your existing Internet connection to make and receive calls. magicJack provides a plug-and-play device (like a USB drive) that you can connect to your computer or high-speed modem to start making local and long-distance calls. You can use magicJack for as little as $19.95/year per line.

With the newest magicJack Plus system, you don't have to have your computer on at all times in order to receive a call.

Having been a Magicjack user since 2010 and believe I've had it long enough to make a qualified opinion. The first 2 or 3 years after the service came out, it was troublesome for sure. Many hiccups that were aggravating but, I felt the $20 a year cost was worth the temporary inconvenience. During the early years I actually had an opportunity to exchange emails and eventually a phone call with the inventor Dan Borislo,(who has since passed away) and he assured me that every month he was making changes to the staffing and the service level. Believing in Dan's words, I chose to renew my membership for 3yrs. then 5 and just last week I renewed for another 5 years. I'm still using the original unit that was sent to me 11 years ago. Is it perfect Pretty close. I haven't had to call for service issues for years.

The price includes long distance anywhere in N America (except for Alaska and Hawaii) and, call forwarding, call waiting, call display, conference calling. You can take your MJ overseas and plug it in over there and use it to call N America for free.
Sometimes, if I'm on my computer while talking on the phone, the phone can cut in and out a little bit. Might be because I have the 1st generation unit or my internet speed.

Wasted over 2 1/2 hours tonight with customer service agent LOURDES. Put me on hold to figure out why my MJ wasn't working, I had renewed it last week, kept asking the same questions over and was not reading my responses, just canned responses. She says: "HOLD ON" and I wait and wait and wait ------ then got disconnected due to inactivity. So I called back. Waited again for 45 minutes, was #11 in the cue this time, and finally I get LOURDES again, who starts from square one even thought I told her I had just spoken to her an hour ago. She kept sending me the same canned responses and it was obvious she was not reading my replies because what she was telling me was not showing on my screen. So she kept sending the same canned responses over and over and over again. I was beyond frustrated at this point. I gave her the correct billing address and alternate phone number, same that I gave in the first conversation and they were fine then, but this time she kept sending the canned response asking for my correct billing address. It was complete: #, Street, City, Province, Country & postal code. There is nothing else. I was logged into my account and copied and pasted it to show her. No response. Finally she says "I can't help you." and disconnects.

Since it's not working, other than getting a dial tone, there are no pros.
Doesn't work & lousy customer service who don't seem to care if they help or not.

Check out their fb page and start reading comments. They get you by paying in advance, the more years, the cheaper. I paid for a year service and I have use of my phone 1%. No exaggerating. Dropped calls, callers cant hear me, static. No tone and error messages. I called to cancel..first u dont get a refund. So your out the money for the unit, out what you paid for a service and your money. I use my name on the account, my card my address but put the main name as a fake name because I'm a single lady alone. They will not talk to me, they want to talk to this fictional person. I explained the case, explained my card is what's used but nope. They insist on talking to Sigmund Freud. Just useless. Filled my complaint with BBB, hope isnt much. Save your money.

Calls are always scratchy. Power supply died within the first year. App just barely works, but is so unreliable that you won't use it. Marketing is soooo misleading, expect it to cost a lot more than what they advertise. Worst of all, when you have a problem, you will wait 20 minutes to chat with a bot. I STRONGLY suggest going with another provider.

Sound quality is bad, hardware is poorly designed/prone to failure, hidden charges, horrible customer service. App is useless.

What a terrible company to deal with. Overcharged me by 32 dollars on my credit card. Called them, waited over an hour, to be told they are unable to refund anyone for any reason, even admitting they did overcharge me!! I am shocked at the blatant thieving from this company. Advised them to cancel my service but naturally have to wait a year! Appalling they get away with it!!!! Debbie

Been a customer for a few years now. Forgot to pay my yearly fee so once i realized i paid it & the service still was connected. After a few minutes called customer service & tried to troubleshoot & it still didn't work. Customer service seen the balance was paid for the year & couldn't get why it wasnt back on. They had tech support call & they said oh we dont have the year plan anymore, its only the 3 or 5 yr plans. I said your website took my yearly pymt & now all of a sudden i have to pay 3yrs.? He said well due to covid-19 the website hasn't updated & i told him that wasnt my fault & needed to honor the yr i paid for & he said no. You cant have one thing online & then tell me something different. Bad service & it took hours to restore.

Works ok.

A former employee set up a MagicJack phone, which he used until he left the company. He set it up using his COMPANY email address and paid via COMPANY credit card. Our company is NOT able to cancel this phone number. They report that he must cancel it, even though it's a company line and set it up for company use. Very frustrating ... infuriating even. And so illogical. After much time on the phone with customer service -- and never able to cancel the line, I finally learned on my own (by searching the website) how to forward the phone line. Customer Service was nice / pleasant, but unhelpful. She wouldn't even inform me how to forward the calls. It was strange. I suggest avoiding Magic Jack.

I don't know ... didn't use it. A former employee used it.

Our account is in my husband's name. I tried to cancel it because he died and I do not use it and when I called customer service in January, they refused to cancel the account for me because my husband's name is on the account, not mine. It is my e-mail alias on the account but that apparently wasn't good enough. They required me to send in a death certificate. While I thought this was insane and infuriating, I did send in the death certificate exactly as they requested. I never heard back and followed up in e-mail 2 more times. This started on January 24th and it is now April 3rd. I logged into the account today and verified it still isn't cancelled so I called them. They still won't cancel it, telling me they now need my ID. This is crazy, the account owner is dead, they have his death certificate. That they continue to try to make me jump through hoops is appalling. I didn't have this much problem dealing with the Social Security Administration....

I would avoid MagicJack like the plague it is. I order the device. It came 2 weeks later. Took snail-mail to a whole new level. The setup told me I had to pay $12 for 911 and $25 to port my number over. Another two week wait for that. Then, I finally plugged it in - and it was dead. Spent over an hour trying to find how to ask a real human a question, then hours waiting on hold to talk with someone. They didn't have a clue, and gave me a tech support number to call. Hours later, having me plug and unplug stuff multiple times, they finally figured out the machine was DOA. They sent me an RMA and said they would send a new device. I waited weeks for the new device. It never came. Hours more on hold and they told me they never just send a replacement - I had to order and pay for another one. It finally came - again stretching the limits of what snail-mail means. After hours on the phone with tech support, it works. Then, I got another email from them telling me I have to pay for 911 again - because that last payment I made was for the DOA device - and they can't transfer it to the new device. This place is a total rip off. So, I called Billing office. They told me I have to pay again. They told me that's the way it is. They told me there is no option. I told them I wanted to talk to a supervisor. They told me that the supervisor has to call me back, so they verified my cell phone number, and then said the supervisor would call me back. Didn't happen. Today, 4 days later, I called billing again. 1 hour after they answered and said that I could talk to a rep 29 minutes from now, I finally got a rep. I told her I wanted to talk to a supervisor. She said the only way to talk to a supervisor is to have them call me back. It's been 2 hours on hold. They don't have anyone who can talk to me. Obviously, what I am demanding isn't on their script. They tell me that MagicJack doesn't process the 911 info fees, yet my payment went to MagicJack.com. I have it on my credit card statement. They are LIARS!. The people answering their phones are LIARS!. Their supervisors say they will call you back, but they don't. They are LIARS! They say they don't process fee payments, but my records from my bank says the do. They are LIARS. DO NOT DEAL WITH THIS COMPANY. THEY ARE LIARS! THEY ARE CROOKS!

When and if it starts to work, it's OK. The cost is good, but you get what you pay for...
Tech support, including their website is abysmal! If what you want isn't covered by the FAQ site, you're in deep sh@t. If what you want isn't on their script, then you're in it, too. Avoid this company like the plague it is.

    The Skinny

    magicJack Revealed

    What is magicJack?

A magicJack is a small device that allows you to make Internet phone calls for cheap prices.

As of 2016, magicJack Express costs $39.95 plus shipping and handling. You get 3 months of free unlimited calling to the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. Additional years cost $35.

    How does magicJack work?

One of magicJack's top selling points is its ease of installation.

    1. Plug your phone into the magicJack
    2. Plug the magicJack into your computer
    3. Start making calls

Is there a special magicJack phone?

Nope! The magicJack device is what's known in the industry as an analog telephone adapter (ATA). You won't need a special phone in order to use magicJack.

What do you think of magicJack?

Many users have had a variety of issues with magicJack (as evidenced by the reviews). However, here are a couple of advantages of magicJack:

    1. Lowest Monthly Rates

Setting aside the fact that the first 6 months of phone service with magicJack are absolutely free, monthly rates are available for as little as $3.00 per month. Prices like that are extremely hard to complain about, and even some of our most scathing magicJack reviews still rate magicJack with 5 stars in the price category.

    2. Cheap Equipment

Any way you slice it, $39.95 is a great price to pay for the complete setup of a VoIP phone service that uses your existing phones. Other VoIP companies require specialized IP phones that can cost over $100, and an ATA adapter alone is often more than $50.

Even if the device runs into a problem and needs to be replaced, the low cost takes most of the sting out of a new purchase. In fact, with the money you'll save with magicJack's low monthly rate, the device practically pays for itself.

    3. Easy to Use

MagicJack is designed for people who have never heard of VoIP in the first place, and want a simple plug-and-play device that works right away. That's exactly what magicJack offers, and the new magicJack PLUS offers even more options. The old device required a constant connection to a computer to work, but the new one only needs to do so once to register. After that, just plug it into the wall and feel free to shut the computer off. The video below outlines how to use magicJack without a computer.

Previously the magicJack software was been reported by some as very difficult to remove. MagicJack software now comes with an easier to access uninstall option, so this point is no longer valid.

    MagicJack Customer Service

Unfortunately, magicJack does not have a customer service hotline. That means that the only way to resolve a service issue is through a high-traffic chat room, which occasionally has a slow response time as a result. Fortunately, the device is easy to install, so you'll likely never need the support. If you run into trouble, our best advice is to be patient with the chat, and see if the issue lies with your router configuration or Internet speed in the meantime.

If everything checks out and the chat system seems frustrating, just try doing something else for a while and wait for the chat system to get back to you. You can watch one of the many fan-made YouTube videos for magicJack support, try one of the links below to see if your issue is answered there, or even take care of checking your email while you wait. Sometimes, the best option is to simply wait a few hours for the peak traffic to die down, so that the support team has more time to dedicate to your needs. Either way, spending an hour or two researching and fixing any issues with the magicJack adapter is definitely worth the amount of money that you're saving with .

    Third-party magicJack Support

There are also some helpful blogs out there on the web that cover how to use magicJack if you still encounter trouble.

    Overall Analysis

In the end, and despite the issues that customers raise about magicJack service, we feel that magicJack offers a very low priced Residential VoIP service, especially for someone new to VoIP. However, there are a lot of negative customer reviews you should take into consideration. The extremely low monthly rate for unlimited phone calls is impossible to ignore, and the ease of installation further makes the case that magicJack's barebones VoIP service is one of the best in the industry.!

Don't take our word for it. We've got over 100 magicJack reviews for real magicJack customers. See what magicJack users have to say.

If you have used magicJack, here's you should do: Write a review. We could use your voice on our website.
