magicJack Reviews

magicJack is an extremely cheap VoIP provider that works by using your existing Internet connection to make and receive calls. magicJack provides a plug-and-play device (like a USB drive) that you can connect to your computer or high-speed modem to start making local and long-distance calls. You can use magicJack for as little as $19.95/year per line.

With the newest magicJack Plus system, you don't have to have your computer on at all times in order to receive a call.

Is magicJack worth it?

We recommend that anyone interested in buying a magicJack read the user reviews here first.

I use Republic Wireless as my cell phone provider which is a wifi phone service. I wanted a regular home phone to chat on as I hate talking on my cell phone and my cell phone reception at home isn't so good. Using Magicjack was suggested and I find it to be perfectly fine. Much better than my other wifi phone set up. No one thinks I'm on some wierd phone. My only issue thus far is not having the names show up on caller Id. I think you do get what you pay for but even if this works for a few months I'll be farther ahead.

I have read all the pros and cons and it seems like people love this or hate it with a passion. Since it started out good and the phone reception and voice quality is great I love it. It works fine just plugged into the wall with no computer on.
the problems I've had was if you lose power in the connection for a brief moment you need to reinstall the set up again. Hasn't been a big problem but a little frustrating. I chatted with online support and found them ok but it was time consuming.

Was looking forward to this low cost alternative to the Vonage system I've used for about 7 or 8 years. The cost of Vonage pushed me away. MagicJack sounded too good to be 1.
Received the MagicJack packet about 5 days after ordering. The only instructions are printed on the inside flap of the package. Shows two alternate installation processes - one for router only (no computer) and a second for computer use.
After many attempts of following the details step-by-step, it wouldn't work. Finally decided to attempt to connect to the computer to see if that would work. After attempting to go through the 'Register Your MagicJack' process 4 times, I went to the live chat site for help. First thing they did is email me a MagicJack update. It took them 3 attempts and over an hour to get the registration process completed. At that point, the MagicJack worked on the computer. The tech told me it was now ready to plug directly into the router so it would work as advertised without the computer.
I tried the system on 3 different routers - it never would work - I got a continuous dial tone, the system wouldn't dial out.
I re-connected to the computer and went back to the chat room. Over a 3 day period, and a total of 7+ hours of attempts; AND after talking to at least 12 of the 'Top 10 technical support specialists' I was transferred to - they never could get it to work. They even attempted to talk me through router setting changes.
I got disconnected twice - due to their instructions to unplug the router - which disconnected the computer connection and cut them off. When connecting back, I had to start over each time - with a rookie tech agent, starting over with the explanation (they had no record/tracking of my prior calls), eventually getting escalated again to one o their 'Top 10 technical support specialists'. They were never able to resolve the problem.
But, I decided to keep the system and use it through my computer. After 2 weeks, it would no longer work on my computer. Today I contacted the chat room again. First thing they did is send another MagicJack update. This fixed the problem on my computer. I explained my dis-satisfaction with the entire MagicJack experience, telling the agent about the failure to work on a router as promised.
Today's agent asked me if I had an iPhone (I do), and suggested that I use the power plug/adapter that I use to charge my phone; hook the MagicJack to that adapter, then try connecting to the router. I followed the steps, using my iPhone adapter, and the system worked.
The tech agent said the problem was the MagicJack provided adapter. I asked if they could ship me a new/working adapter. Here's where I really got 'hacked' with MagicJack.
They will NOT send a new adapter until I return the defective one, at my expense. Then, they will ship me a new one. The tech agent strongly suggested that it would be best if I just purchase one myself from a local store.
The system is horribly pathetic, the company's policy for providing a replacement for defective parts is unbelievable, and although the customer service techs made every attempt to assist - the chat process is long and cumbersome - especially when getting cut off and having to start over. And, it took over 4 weeks for them to suggest that the problem was with the power adapter.
DON'T WAST YOUR TIME AND MONEY ON MAGICJACK!!

Price is good. Product works ok when connected to the computer.
Pathetic Customer Support. Can only get support through online chat. Sound/voice quality is horrible. Registration process is lousy - appears simple in instructions, but many missing steps.

Not much else to say other than the service stinks. One would hope that you get what you pay for but that would all be too easy.

I had to buy four magic jacks in the last year or so just because I would not get support for defective AC Adaptors. C.S. manager did not have any customer service skills and did not care or appreciate the urgency to restore phone/fax line. Three AC Adaptors went bad, two of them within first two months and again no help or support from C.S. or tech support. That is why I am taking the time to point this out as it is clear to me that there is an issue with MagicJack wall AC Adaptors but MagicJack would not acknowledge it and will force you or suggest that you will need to buy a new one. They do not even offer AC Adaptors only. Add lack of professionalism from C.S.

Cheap but you get what you paid for
No Customer service, no reliability as far as equipment, repeated issues with AC Adapter and no support of help from provider as it is not included in any warranty or insurance. Have to buy a whole new unit. Customer service was very rude and not understanding the urgency to get new AC Adaptor that went bad for a two month old magicjack and do not care that this is being used for business and do not care.

quite the scam! first off, we purchased magicjack with the assumption that it was $30 for life, after paying over $100 for our hardware, port in fee and the first year we were very unhappy with the quality and the fact that we could not even call forward our line as it stated it could (apparently they disabled this feature). After requesting to port back our number we had to pay another $50 for an additional year fee as well as a $30 port out fee!!! as a business customer and having dealt with many other providers, MagicJack tops them off for the worst in every category. VERY DISAPPOINTED TO SAY THE LEAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

none
bad customer service, bad quality, no features, many hidden fees

They cite the terms when denying a refund. I cited the term that they agreed to provide me a working phone service.

MagicJack...approach with caution.
I bought a magicjack back in 2010 just to use as a second line, as I work from home a couple days a week, and don't want to tie up the home phone line. I did not, and will not, give up my POTS service, the magicjack was purely supplemental.
For a while it worked OK - I could live with the sometimes mediocre sound quality, with some 1800 and 1866 numbers being blocked (incl CRA at one point - not good in tax season), and the occassional (probably weekly) going offline as it's just a second line for me. you get what you pay for.
The deal breaker was in 2012 when they started blocking local conference line numbers that I dial into for work (Verizon and Bell conference services) - instead of connecting me, it would instead play an ad telling me I should use the magicjack conference service to "host my conference call" uhmmmm, yeah. that's all well and all, but I'm trying to connect to OTHER peoples conference calls. The workaround, until recently, was to use the toll free numbers that most (but not all) conferences have.
but recently, even the toll free numbers for conference lines haven't been connecting. I just get silence then the dial tone.
That's it for me. I bought 5 years service, I've used 3. I'm ditching the remaining two and cutting my losses. also the prices - my Canadian number has to be renewed yearly, $10, plus the service itself is $30, so $40 a year (3.33/month). Still cheap, but not such a deal if it doesn't work, which for my needs, it does not.
I've since bought a real ATA (Cisco SPA112 device for $38) and signed up for voip.ms; for my needs, it's, a whole lot more reliable, better sound quality, and best of all, no blocked numbers...least none I've found yet; and prices (for my needs) are on par with magicjack. voip.ms isn't quite plug and play, but its not complicated either.

Cheap is what you pay...
Cheap is what you get - Many numbers are blocked, mediocre sound quality, prone to go offline

Everything, customer service is horrible ! they don't care if you are unhappy, their mission appears to be to just repeat the same BS over and over while not listening and then just cut you off, don't waste your money on this thing.

low price...
Although the Canadian packaging ( French / English ) clearly states you can move you existing Phone numberto the Majic jack, you will find once you have ste up the majic jack, created an account and try it will not happen. Contacting majic support gets you the real story, the do not have permission in Canada anywhere to port existing numbers. They are seeling this thing 0ly advertised that you can do this, Stay away.....

MajocJack has horrible Customer Service. Can't talk to a person. Can not escalate to a more competent person. When they make a mistake (e.g. disabling the wrong unit when replacing it under warranty) and REFUSE to correct their mistake.

RAMIN: goodbye.

Great price. Voice quality is good.
Extremely poor technical support. Good service while it is working, but a big pain solving service issues once you go down. NOT good to have 2 units under same account as they manage using Device NAME which can be edited instead of Device Serial Number.

My Magic Jack Plus finally died after about a year and a half (I think) so I decided to switch to Basic Talk since I wasn't happy with Magic Jack anyway. I kept my old phone number when I got the Magic Jack Plus, so I wanted it ported over to the Basic Talk when I switched services. I don't know how much work it is to port out a number but I thought being charged $32.34 for it was quite a bit too much. That's just another reason why I wouldn't recommend a Magic Jack to anyone.

Less expensive than my previous phone company
Not reliable, dropped calls, went out a lot and finally died.

    The Skinny

    magicJack Revealed

    What is magicJack?

A magicJack is a small device that allows you to make Internet phone calls for cheap prices.

As of 2016, magicJack Express costs $39.95 plus shipping and handling. You get 3 months of free unlimited calling to the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. Additional years cost $35.

    How does magicJack work?

One of magicJack's top selling points is its ease of installation.

    1. Plug your phone into the magicJack
    2. Plug the magicJack into your computer
    3. Start making calls

Is there a special magicJack phone?

Nope! The magicJack device is what's known in the industry as an analog telephone adapter (ATA). You won't need a special phone in order to use magicJack.

What do you think of magicJack?

Many users have had a variety of issues with magicJack (as evidenced by the reviews). However, here are a couple of advantages of magicJack:

    1. Lowest Monthly Rates

Setting aside the fact that the first 6 months of phone service with magicJack are absolutely free, monthly rates are available for as little as $3.00 per month. Prices like that are extremely hard to complain about, and even some of our most scathing magicJack reviews still rate magicJack with 5 stars in the price category.

    2. Cheap Equipment

Any way you slice it, $39.95 is a great price to pay for the complete setup of a VoIP phone service that uses your existing phones. Other VoIP companies require specialized IP phones that can cost over $100, and an ATA adapter alone is often more than $50.

Even if the device runs into a problem and needs to be replaced, the low cost takes most of the sting out of a new purchase. In fact, with the money you'll save with magicJack's low monthly rate, the device practically pays for itself.

    3. Easy to Use

MagicJack is designed for people who have never heard of VoIP in the first place, and want a simple plug-and-play device that works right away. That's exactly what magicJack offers, and the new magicJack PLUS offers even more options. The old device required a constant connection to a computer to work, but the new one only needs to do so once to register. After that, just plug it into the wall and feel free to shut the computer off. The video below outlines how to use magicJack without a computer.

Previously the magicJack software was been reported by some as very difficult to remove. MagicJack software now comes with an easier to access uninstall option, so this point is no longer valid.

    MagicJack Customer Service

Unfortunately, magicJack does not have a customer service hotline. That means that the only way to resolve a service issue is through a high-traffic chat room, which occasionally has a slow response time as a result. Fortunately, the device is easy to install, so you'll likely never need the support. If you run into trouble, our best advice is to be patient with the chat, and see if the issue lies with your router configuration or Internet speed in the meantime.

If everything checks out and the chat system seems frustrating, just try doing something else for a while and wait for the chat system to get back to you. You can watch one of the many fan-made YouTube videos for magicJack support, try one of the links below to see if your issue is answered there, or even take care of checking your email while you wait. Sometimes, the best option is to simply wait a few hours for the peak traffic to die down, so that the support team has more time to dedicate to your needs. Either way, spending an hour or two researching and fixing any issues with the magicJack adapter is definitely worth the amount of money that you're saving with .

    Overall Analysis

In the end, and despite the issues that customers raise about magicJack service, we feel that magicJack offers a very low priced Residential VoIP service, especially for someone new to VoIP. However, there are a lot of negative customer reviews you should take into consideration. The extremely low monthly rate for unlimited phone calls is impossible to ignore, and the ease of installation further makes the case that magicJack's barebones VoIP service is one of the best in the industry.!

Don't take our word for it. We've got over 100 magicJack reviews for real magicJack customers. See what magicJack users have to say.
