magicJack Reviews

magicJack is an extremely cheap VoIP provider that works by using your existing Internet connection to make and receive calls. magicJack provides a plug-and-play device (like a USB drive) that you can connect to your computer or high-speed modem to start making local and long-distance calls. You can use magicJack for as little as $19.95/year per line.

With the newest magicJack Plus system, you don't have to have your computer on at all times in order to receive a call.

They now charge for calls to conference bridges. If you plan to call into your company bridge, an interview call, etc. You have to pre-pay first. THey didn't tell ther customers this (at least not me), so we were blind sided. THis makes it worthless for me. Also the jack is to bulky for many usb prots and they warn that using the cable could reduce sound quality.

A decent choice years ago, but not now.

Magic Jack has its good and bad. The good? You cant beat the price for one year. It's a heck of a deal for phone service but when It's time to renew your subsricption, seems that they wont accept your credit card and you cant pay over the phone which is ridiculous. I would much rather get another phone line from another company and not have to worry about my card being rejected simply because they dont know how to operate their method of payment system.

Great price for a land line.
How in the heck do you pay for your bill when they wont accept a credit card. And when you tried after so many times that your card gets suspended, they still ask you to enter the correct info or try another card. Why cant they accept payments over the phone instead of on line?

I have to give Magic Jack credit for creating a service using high speed digital technology that actually works "most" of the time, and it makes a fine backup phone service. May not be entirely safe to use Magic Jack as the main phone line for a business - but I don't consider ANYTHING digital reliable enough to base one's livelihood on. On the whole I'm very happy with the price/service ratio, but will still eventually get a land line with a real cord so I'm not dependent on anything wireless or Internet-based.

Great sound quality, great price and great features. Very quick and easy to set up. In some cases, seems to work even if I can't get on the Internet with the computers. Love the voice mail notifications and ability to play back messages right on the computer - but you still have to check them using the phone or they stay there until deleted.
I have to make almost every outgoing call twice because it keeps saying I didn't include the area code when dialing.

Sound quality below average. Biggest problem was the phone would not ring for incoming calls. After trying a number of times unsuccessfully I returned the device and requested return of the $100 spent on a 5 year plan. I could never get thru on the phone to customer service. I mailed the refund request with copies of receipts but have not received any refund to date. It has been a year since installing and returning the majic jack.

Had it worked, the money saved on land line fees would have been great.

Use magic jack for the following reasons:
1.For your less important calls where you might want to talk for a while on the cheap. I like mine because I have a low usage cell phone plan and I use the magic jack if I want to have a conversation with family without worrying about minutes.
Don't use magic jack for the following reasons:
1. If you have important calls. Magic Jack will often drop calls.
2. If you need a high usage phone line. Magic Jack will cut off service for high usage.
3. If you cannot afford to have your computer on when making calls. Magic Jack + now works with the computer off but sometimes it does not work well.
4. IF sound quality is important to you. The sound quality is only as good as a cell phone at best and sometimes is choppy.
5. If you want to port an important number to Magic Jack. It costs money to port the number in and money to port the number out.

it's cheap if you want to make calls to your family and talk for a while.
1. Magic jack drops calls frequently. 2. sound quality is not the best. 3. magic jack has hidden charges I believe it is $20.00 to port a number in and $30.00 to port out. 4. Customer service is a bad joke. It is a chat box where they will often disconnect from you if you ask too many questions. 5. Magic Jack does not connect to every number. Make sure that MJ works for the numbers you want to call before the return period has expired.

I JUST LOVE MY MJ!!!!! Period! It had done what they said it could do . It is the CHEAPEST SOLUTION . It is as reliable as my internet provider. I have enjoyed the Regular MJ and the PLUS. I have LOVED them both. Used daily and I travel with mine too.

This service is as reliable as the Dry line you have installed it to. I am VERY satisfied on the whole, and have delt with the inconvenience of loosing the ISP provider once in a while. This can be inconvenient, but not bad all things considered. I can actually afford to use the phone and it IS RELIABLE!!All folks on a fixed income should get one of these and not a free cell phone. This is easy to install and you can port your old phone number. Had my number for years. Now I dont have the huge bill. Technical Service is excellent over the phone or computer.Re-Boot Monthly.
When the internet goes down, HAVE A BACK-UP PLAN!!! For the BEST Sound quality Re-Boot monthly. Gets a lot of BAD SPONSORED NEGATIVE PRESS for the Competition. SOUR GRAPES. Go BUY a MJ for yourself and the person you want most to speak frequently with. Best BUY EVER!!!

I started with one in 2008 it was good so I decided to use it for business and bought 5 more to manage business. Troubles started last August, when one of them needed to be renewed, I tried to add a year to my subscription and couldn't so I started to chat with a live agent. They told me that my account is under review and I CAN NOT renew it and I have to wait for an email telling me it is done and I can renew. sFor almost FIVE months they did not finish this endless review and the lines are falling one after the other. Now the main busines device has expired and I had several MANY numerous chats every time same reply like an automated answer
Kathleen: ,as to what I've checked your account here in our database it appears that your account is still under our reviewing process by the desired representative and basically, that is the reason why you are unable to make any transactions in your account
Kathleen: I can only imagine how this situation disappoints and frustrates you. We will work on this so that this issue will have a resolution as fast as possibl
If anyone knows how or where I can complain and report this poor service, please advise.

Since I upgraded to plus, I receive a message that a phone number expired before getting a dial tone (my old account). No one is nice on the chat, they will not provide a phone number or a manager to speak with. Honestly don't have anything nice to say about their customer service. Guess you get what you pay for.

For the price, this is a great deal. It was easy to set-up.

Warning: If you port your number to them for $20, they will 'EXTORT' an additional $10 a year to keep 'your' number. Not mentioned anywhere on their site, support says it's in their Terms of Service, but they would not say what paragraph when I pulled it up with them... It's not there!!! I renewed for 5 years for a great price, and then looking at my page it shows my service is good for 5 years out but then had a 'renew your number' button next to the phone number itself that shows it expires this month! I contacted support as mentioned above and when I demanded to know the exact words as 'proof' of the fee, he abruptly disconnected the chat and closed the conversation. I had copied and pasted the conversation to save and report to the appropriate agencies... Yes it's cheap, but if you port in your current number it'll cost you additional.

Great price, iPhone app to make your number 'portable'.
As mentioned in other reviews, they have hidden fee's that are not presented anywhere on the site. Service is useless if you have an issue...

    The Skinny

    magicJack Revealed

    What is magicJack?

A magicJack is a small device that allows you to make Internet phone calls for cheap prices.

As of 2016, magicJack Express costs $39.95 plus shipping and handling. You get 3 months of free unlimited calling to the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. Additional years cost $35.

    How does magicJack work?

One of magicJack's top selling points is its ease of installation.

    1. Plug your phone into the magicJack
    2. Plug the magicJack into your computer
    3. Start making calls

Is there a special magicJack phone?

Nope! The magicJack device is what's known in the industry as an analog telephone adapter (ATA). You won't need a special phone in order to use magicJack.

What do you think of magicJack?

Many users have had a variety of issues with magicJack (as evidenced by the reviews). However, here are a couple of advantages of magicJack:

    1. Lowest Monthly Rates

Setting aside the fact that the first 6 months of phone service with magicJack are absolutely free, monthly rates are available for as little as $3.00 per month. Prices like that are extremely hard to complain about, and even some of our most scathing magicJack reviews still rate magicJack with 5 stars in the price category.

    2. Cheap Equipment

Any way you slice it, $39.95 is a great price to pay for the complete setup of a VoIP phone service that uses your existing phones. Other VoIP companies require specialized IP phones that can cost over $100, and an ATA adapter alone is often more than $50.

Even if the device runs into a problem and needs to be replaced, the low cost takes most of the sting out of a new purchase. In fact, with the money you'll save with magicJack's low monthly rate, the device practically pays for itself.

    3. Easy to Use

MagicJack is designed for people who have never heard of VoIP in the first place, and want a simple plug-and-play device that works right away. That's exactly what magicJack offers, and the new magicJack PLUS offers even more options. The old device required a constant connection to a computer to work, but the new one only needs to do so once to register. After that, just plug it into the wall and feel free to shut the computer off. The video below outlines how to use magicJack without a computer.

Previously the magicJack software was been reported by some as very difficult to remove. MagicJack software now comes with an easier to access uninstall option, so this point is no longer valid.

    MagicJack Customer Service

Unfortunately, magicJack does not have a customer service hotline. That means that the only way to resolve a service issue is through a high-traffic chat room, which occasionally has a slow response time as a result. Fortunately, the device is easy to install, so you'll likely never need the support. If you run into trouble, our best advice is to be patient with the chat, and see if the issue lies with your router configuration or Internet speed in the meantime.

If everything checks out and the chat system seems frustrating, just try doing something else for a while and wait for the chat system to get back to you. You can watch one of the many fan-made YouTube videos for magicJack support, try one of the links below to see if your issue is answered there, or even take care of checking your email while you wait. Sometimes, the best option is to simply wait a few hours for the peak traffic to die down, so that the support team has more time to dedicate to your needs. Either way, spending an hour or two researching and fixing any issues with the magicJack adapter is definitely worth the amount of money that you're saving with .

    Third-party magicJack Support

There are also some helpful blogs out there on the web that cover how to use magicJack if you still encounter trouble.

    Overall Analysis

In the end, and despite the issues that customers raise about magicJack service, we feel that magicJack offers a very low priced Residential VoIP service, especially for someone new to VoIP. However, there are a lot of negative customer reviews you should take into consideration. The extremely low monthly rate for unlimited phone calls is impossible to ignore, and the ease of installation further makes the case that magicJack's barebones VoIP service is one of the best in the industry.!

Don't take our word for it. We've got over 100 magicJack reviews for real magicJack customers. See what magicJack users have to say.

If you have used magicJack, here's you should do: Write a review. We could use your voice on our website.
