Internet Phone is another word for "VoIP" (Voice over Internet Protocol) or "Internet calling". Internet Phone is a great way for people to save money on their monthly phone bill.
magicJack is an extremely cheap VoIP provider that works by using your existing Internet connection to make and receive calls. magicJack provides a plug-and-play device (like a USB drive) that you can connect to your computer or high-speed modem to start making local and long-distance calls. You can use magicJack for as little as $19.95/year per line.
With the newest magicJack Plus system, you don't have to have your computer on at all times in order to receive a call.

Magicjack really doesn't adjust any mistakes made in pricing or service
Monsterbot7
I bought this device for me and my elderly mother (80 years) to make our bill less and our lives happier. This device does just the opposite. Customer service didn't resolve my problems, their billing came at a surprise. They didn't want to reimburse my money and my subscription was a couple of days into renewal. Stealing my money if you ask me. Purchased my device at Wal-mart with the understanding I would only pay 19.95 a year, prices went up to 29.95 a year and you have to pay that extra 10.00 dollars to keep your phone number or your up a creek..... My service was completely interrupted with dropped calls, bad connections and not to mention that little voice reminding you to complete a process, why not an email or a letter. To end up with problems like this, I'm going to a competitor; this was just my first year of service..
No monthly bills
Customer Service help really doesn't adjust any mistakes made in pricing or service and it's always your fault. Customer service doesn't resolve any issues you have, they have absolutely no power, your just wasting your breath. 0 advertisement, prices change with out notice, problems with device and computer compatibility, interrupted service messages while on the line, line isn't clear, dropped calls. Customer Service has no direct number.

MAGICJACK IS THE WORST RIPOFF
iphatcoolcat
I payed 60.00 in radio shack have all the attachments to plug it in the wall, and I do not recommend this service. It was not very well thought out and the only thing it lets me do is send faxes. Other than that it's not worth the money and it is very troublesome. You can't use your computer and be on the phone at the same time it makes you cut in and out it also freezes my computer up all the time I am really aggravated because of this and afraid that if I plug it into the wall it will catch my house on fire because it does over heat! So I leave it in my computer .
IT LET'S ME SEND FAXES
It cuts in and out,has static, overheats when you plug it into the wall, hangs up and goes back to dial tone, people call in and can't hear you after several attempts,it has cost me 60.00 and a lot of missed calls and aggravation.

My main problem is I am unable to complete a call, and this is an intermittent problem and very aggravating.
Other problem is that it will connect with but then cut in and out when the other party is talking.
Another problem is the so called tech support does not know anything and are just giving their stock answers.
cheap
Will not complete calls and jumps back to dial tone.
Tech support, (if you want to call it that), said I needed to download a firmware upgrade. I did and it did not help.

magicJack vs Canada
17Tons
Bought one of these units for our house in AZ. $39.95 at Walgreens. Upgraded to the 5 year plan. Started using the device, when suddenly could op longer call forward. Managed to email MJ and was given a link to use call forwarding, and was told it was being reviewed. Ridiculous (I told them). That was one of it's few features, and the reason to get it. Fast forward a couple of years, and was feeling that it was a good buy. Decided I would do away with my landline in Canada. Signed up online to order one. Went from $60 for 5 years in the USA to suddenly $178.00 for 5 years, with rush shipping. 2 weeks later no MJ+. Contacted them trying to find my MJ+. Was told that there is no rush shipping to Canada, that if I had read their blog, I would have known that they ship USPS, and when it gets to the border, they don't know what happens to it. I can (and do) have goods shipped to Canada in 2 - 3 days. Any other company would send it via FedEx or UPS. Not these robbers! I had already booked a holiday, so went away, and when I got back to Canada, found the MJ+ in the regular mail. Plugged it in as per instructions, and although I got a dial tone, no software downloaded, and no instructions on how to get it. Never could get hold of 'Live Chat'. It must be just a ruse. They would send BS stuff after a couple of hours and state that if I didn't respond within 1 hour, then I had to accept everything they said. I guess they think that we sit around waiting for them. Tried to have my local number ported to MJ+, but was told they could not do it in Canada. Funny how any other company in Canada can do it. There is just no customer service with magicJack. I finally got a RMA from them, boxed it up, and couriered it back to them. I will be going with a different voip provider in Canada.
Initial cost proposed to be good.
Missing a bunch of features that should be considered standard. No customer service.

We had magicJack Plus for one year and used in WI and FL with great success. No problems with sound or call connection. It was great; would have recommended to anyone. Then, I forgot the mJ device when we returned to WI from FL this spring, so I called and got another device shipped to home for under $11. Great! When device was connected, we started w/the usual great service for severall hours. Then suddenly, device wouldn't work. Outgoing calls rang busy; incoming calls went to voice mail. Unplugging device for a short time and replugging worked to reestablish connection. Sometimes, connection worked for a day or two; at other times, only for a hour. We never know when/if we can make or receive calls. Customer service is cumbersome. We called customer service over a dozen times. Each time it was the same drill...over and over, each time with a different representative. Each time, we were subsequently referred to a Top 10% Service Tec. Each time the connection would work (we told them it would because all we have to do is unplug/replug the unit to get it to work). Eventually, they just told us all indications are we have a great connection so they just hung up ("Opps, connection has been lost"message) We give up!
Great price, sound and clarity when it worked. Didn't notice difference from traditional landline. First mJ plus device was reliable; easy to install. Easily transported and great for travel. It was so unnoticed, I forgot to unplug and take it with us when we came home after last trip. Called mJ and they sent new device quickly.
Unreliable! First device was great; worked everywhere. Second device does not work all the time to make/receive calls; we never know if it's working or not. Poor customer service.

While the MagicJack is a great way (and fairly stable) for me to call the USA while in the Philippines, the customer support here at home COULD NOT BE WORSE; IT’S HORRIBLE.
Cheap and fairly dependable communications
Know (before you buy) that you will NOT get any product support worth 10 cents

FREE Local & Long Distance Calls ???
Zeddikus
When I purchased Magic Jack device, I was promissed "FREE Local & Long Distance Calls". The same is mentioned on the main page of MagicJack.com. In the critical moment, when I tried to call to a clinic in my city with local number (605)-XXX-XXXX, a cheerful man's voice from Magic Jack recommended me to go to my.MagikJack.com and purchase some additional credit to make a call to this local number. I thought, probably it was only single exclusion. But, no. Most of my friends from my city are not available with Magic Jack too. The same reason.
I tried to clarify this question via Magic Jack chat service. I was explained that in fact not all local & long Distance Calls are free. Only SOME of local & long Distance Calls are free. Another part of numbers requires to purchase some additional credit from MagikJack. The assistant recommended me to read Terms and conditions of their service carefully. When I tried to ask, why MagicJacks's advertisement and promisses do not correspond to their service, the online assistant terminanted our chat session...
So, Magic Jack is not kind of company, you can trust in the critical moment.
Cheap.
Not all local numbers are free - some of local numbers require to purchase an addition credit from MagicJack.

MAGICJACK IS THE WORST PURCHASE I'VE EVER MADE
jminer
My callers could hear other people's conversations bleeding into ours.
Very often when specific people would call, I would get nothing but dead air but they were able to hear me going, "Hello...Hello...?" Then I would have to call them back.
Once, I had a memorial service at my house, so I had a lot of guests who had never been here, so on the invitations I gave instructions on how to use the call box in the lobby so that I could buzz them in. Half of those callers--including the Minister for the ceremony--called repeatedly and the phone never rang AND never showed on the call log. It happens quite a lot and makes me wonder how many other calls I've missed.
There is no Customer Service phone number, so I've spent hours at a time chatting online while one idiot after another tries to "troubleshoot" my problems. I keep telling them that the only reason I have to have a landline is because there's no cell service out here, but they repeatedly ask me to do things like call my phone number from a different phone, etc.
The MJ is set to EST and I'm on PST, so the timestamp on the calls was always 3 hours off, and the clock on the phone is also.
Certain phone numbers that I have saved into my phone handset's directory and assigned to a speed dial WILL NOT speed dial and require that I look up their number and dial it the old-fashioned way.
Sometimes that person on the other end can barely hear me at all, even though I'm speaking louder and louder. And I have a brand-new high-quality phone.
At times, I've either restarted my computer or the internet has flickered or gone out for a second and I've forgotten to reset the MJ, so I've gone for long periods before realizing that I have not had phone service. Anyone who's tried to call me during that time is not logged, so I have no idea.
Often the voice mail gets a glitch in it where it gives the menu options but will not play the messages.
It's cheap and you don't have a phone bill for a whole year
Nothing

Magic Jack - Not a magic carpet ride

I'm disabled and have to have 911 service. Now what do I do? If I call from my cell and can't communicate they won't know where I'm located. That means in an emergency that I could possibly die. Thanks MagicJack.
Cheap
Dropped calls, some people I call hear an echo, no 911 service!
A magicJack is a small device that allows you to make Internet phone calls for cheap prices.
As of 2016, magicJack Express costs $39.95 plus shipping and handling. You get 3 months of free unlimited calling to the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. Additional years cost $35.
How does magicJack work?
One of magicJack's top selling points is its ease of installation.
Plug your phone into the magicJack
Plug the magicJack into your computer
Start making calls
Is there a special magicJack phone?
Nope! The magicJack device is what's known in the industry as an analog telephone adapter (ATA). You won't need a special phone in order to use magicJack.
What do you think of magicJack?
Many users have had a variety of issues with magicJack (as evidenced by the reviews). However, here are a couple of advantages of magicJack:
1. Lowest Monthly Rates
Setting aside the fact that the first 6 months of phone service with magicJack are absolutely free, monthly rates are available for as little as $3.00 per month. Prices like that are extremely hard to complain about, and even some of our most scathing magicJack reviews still rate magicJack with 5 stars in the price category.
2. Cheap Equipment
Any way you slice it, $39.95 is a great price to pay for the complete setup of a VoIP phone service that uses your existing phones. Other VoIP companies require specialized IP phones that can cost over $100, and an ATA adapter alone is often more than $50.
Even if the device runs into a problem and needs to be replaced, the low cost takes most of the sting out of a new purchase. In fact, with the money you'll save with magicJack's low monthly rate, the device practically pays for itself.
3. Easy to Use
MagicJack is designed for people who have never heard of VoIP in the first place, and want a simple plug-and-play device that works right away. That's exactly what magicJack offers, and the new magicJack PLUS offers even more options. The old device required a constant connection to a computer to work, but the new one only needs to do so once to register. After that, just plug it into the wall and feel free to shut the computer off. The video below outlines how to use magicJack without a computer.
Previously the magicJack software was been reported by some as very difficult to remove. MagicJack software now comes with an easier to access uninstall option, so this point is no longer valid.
MagicJack Customer Service
Unfortunately, magicJack does not have a customer service hotline. That means that the only way to resolve a service issue is through a high-traffic chat room, which occasionally has a slow response time as a result. Fortunately, the device is easy to install, so you'll likely never need the support. If you run into trouble, our best advice is to be patient with the chat, and see if the issue lies with your router configuration or Internet speed in the meantime.
If everything checks out and the chat system seems frustrating, just try doing something else for a while and wait for the chat system to get back to you. You can watch one of the many fan-made YouTube videos for magicJack support, try one of the links below to see if your issue is answered there, or even take care of checking your email while you wait. Sometimes, the best option is to simply wait a few hours for the peak traffic to die down, so that the support team has more time to dedicate to your needs. Either way, spending an hour or two researching and fixing any issues with the magicJack adapter is definitely worth the amount of money that you're saving with .

There are also some helpful blogs out there on the web that cover how to use magicJack if you still encounter trouble.
Overall Analysis
In the end, and despite the issues that customers raise about magicJack service, we feel that magicJack offers a very low priced Residential VoIP service, especially for someone new to VoIP. However, there are a lot of negative customer reviews you should take into consideration. The extremely low monthly rate for unlimited phone calls is impossible to ignore, and the ease of installation further makes the case that magicJack's barebones VoIP service is one of the best in the industry.!
