magicJack Reviews

magicJack is an extremely cheap VoIP provider that works by using your existing Internet connection to make and receive calls. magicJack provides a plug-and-play device (like a USB drive) that you can connect to your computer or high-speed modem to start making local and long-distance calls. You can use magicJack for as little as $19.95/year per line.

With the newest magicJack Plus system, you don't have to have your computer on at all times in order to receive a call.

Is magicJack worth it?

We recommend that anyone interested in buying a magicJack read the user reviews here first.

Customer service agents don't seem to be knowledgeable one bit. Each chat sessions agent contradict the previous chat - I for sure can never get a correct answer anytime. I get tired of typing and just have to hang-up without any proper resolution for which I started the chat with your agent. It does certainly looks like the service reps are not at all trained properly of the products and services. I've some examples of it if you contact me I can give it to you

I spent 10 hours chatting with customer support, my magicjack only worked with the computer on, but I wanted my Magicjack to be connected to the wall, but the phone never worked connected to the wall. I'm returning it back to RadioShack today. Now I know why the magicjack is cheap, there customer support team sucks!!! Every time they said they were going to transfer me to someone higher up or to have someone get remote access to my computer, the person on the chat would disconnect me and never come back. I tried about five times the same procedure and nothing. I asked to be passed to a manager and it was my last attempt to see if they would do so, so I could keep the system, but they never did. I spent 10 hours and accomplished nothing! Don't waist your time or money!!!!!!!

Save money and it only works with you installing the magicjack to the computer. But it's too good to be 1, don't buy unless your okay for your computer to be on 24/7. I cannot risk my computer being on 24/7.
MagicJack came out with magicJack PLUS. They claim you can connect without a computer. It does not work when connected to the wall, you need to connect it directly to the computer. I do have internet service and I did connect the ethernet to the magicjack and it never worked. My computer and internet was fine during the entire time. So I knew it was not my internet service.

I bought 5 years worth of MajicJack and after 1 year I was shut off. They say I will be turned back on as soon as someone in Bangladesh? gets in contact with their accounting office and sends me a verification number. 24 hrs, no number!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Except for the total lack of customer support it is probably worth what you pay for it. You will be "chatting" with someone who is paid a few rupies to understand the company rules and not understand human consumers and what they are paying for (like phone service). Ayesha would not give any estimate when I might have my 5 year prepaid phone service reinstated. You may ask for and be transferred to a "supervisor" as many times as you would like. Of course it is the person in the next chair who you can then spend a while telling them who you are and what is your problem.

If you want to say that you have a home phone number for cheap and don't mind getting cut off, and having no customer service except for Ayesha in LJLJ:JK:LJ, then you have come to the right place.

Cheap is cheap! Think twice before purchasing this device. Most of the reviews you will read are fake, created by their marketing team. Just imagine – would you run to your computer to write a good review if you are completely satisfied? You are writing a review only if you are angry and want to take your revenge. If everything works fine you just forget about that.
You will have 30 days trial period. Within that time everything will work fine. I started having problems on the very next day after the trial period ended. I’ve been with the Magicjack for about 40 days and already sick and tired of their Customer NO service and technical problems.
If you purchase the device be ready to frequent disconnections. You will not hear your opponents in most cases they are calling you. They will have to either redial few times or you will redial them.
The Magicjack company has no phone number on their site. The only way to contact them is a live chat. I had to chat almost every day in order to reset the device on their end and it did not fix the problem.
They also promised me that I could continue to use my Google Voice IP number when I decided to switch to Magicjack. And within 30-days trial I could use it. On the day 31-st I lost this service. Per their operator: As per terms of service , you can't connect to a non ILEC number if you do not have an IPP on your phone .. This part of Terms of service was already fully implemented.
How could I two weeks ago?
They advertise millions of customers are join their company, but they don’t tell you how many customers leave after they experienced problems with them. Cheap is cheap!

The advertised cheap price is if you pay for FIVE YEARS in advance. If you want to keep your own number, you pay to bring it over -- and you pay every year to keep it. This more than doubles the advertised cost. Then every week you pick up the phone and there's no dial tone. How long has has the phone been dead? How many calls have you missed? Their answer: re-boot your router! Fix the problem? Only until the next time -- which will be in the next few days.

Don't waste your time or money. Very disappointed with MAGICJACK. Sound quality is terrible. Lots of popping and can't heard what people are saying. Half the calls drop out. When people call sometimes MJ will record their voice message and e-mail it to me instead of letting my machine record the message.
I called another phone service to change phone companies and keep my phone number and it will take two weeks. Then MJ sends me an e-mail and says they have to charge me $32 to port my number to the new service. WHAT A RIP OFF!
DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY!!!!!!!!!

After 2 years with Magic Jack I had no problems, so went all out and bought another 6 years. Magic Jack has changed their terms of service. They now want you to buy prepaid minutes to make local calls unless you are calling someone who also has Magic Jack or a cell phone. This is in addition to the annual fee. They seem to be able to change the terms of service in the middle of the contract. They also will not refund any portion of your subscription if you have had the service over 30 days. I am now unplugging my Magic Jack and will tell everyone I know just how shady this company is.

Low price, easy to install
The "live chat" is like talking to someone in a foreign country, communication is tough to understand. They now have recorded ads that people have to listen to when they call me. Sometimes the caller is unable to leave a message on my answering machine. Sometimes I can only get my messages by going on line. It's inconsistent.

I and my wife have been with Magic Jack for going on 3 years and we are not in anyway sorry we are using them and we intend to renew next month for another year. We are planning on getting the new device so we can plug it directly into our router. The device we have is quire reliable. I would not recommend Magic Jack as a primary phone service. However, having limited minutes on our cell phone family account, the Magic Jack is great for the many hour or longer phone conversations we have with family and friends.
For the money Magic Jack is one heck of a deal. I don't know how they do it for the money. There are competitors out there. So, if upi don't like Magic Jack, then go with someone else.
I would recommend Magic Jack to my family and friends. In fact, I have recommended Magic Jack to family and friends for years.

Great little device. Super easy installation. Great reliability. Super, super low price $39.95 per year! Come on, What do you want?
Depending upon the width of your broadband connection you may have some dropped packets and the connection voice quality can at times result in having to call again. But, again, What do you want for $3 and change per month.

I had very bad experience with Magicjack and its service,
the device was brand new, it worked for few minutes and stopped,
I wasted almost two days chating with customer service technical support, they kept transferring me from one person to other,
They keep you waiting because it seems they provide service for more than one customer at a time,
customer service went through everything, I even gave them remote access to my computer,
The issue was not resolved, at the end they said the device is defected and it has to be replaced,
They asked me for about 25% of the cost for shipment to replace it(maybe this is the cost of the shipment and device for them),
I asked for this to be waived, they said this is the policy (as if it is untouchable Holy Book)
I refused to pay and told them I will share this bad experience, they said OK (as if THEY DON'T CARE)
They misled me by saying they don't have a telephone number for technical support and they actually do,
I think they are using their previous reputation and the patent protection and market monopoly,
All what I am left with now is a piece of junk called Magicjack Device, and a bad experience about them,
Please share this with whomever wants to buy this device again.

I have had two for 5 years. The first one was plugged into a wireless PC and it had alot of trouble. I chatted in over and over and over about this and no one said anything was wrong with plugging this into a wireless device, so I didn't put any pieces together. After hours and hours and days and days of chatting over the problems with the first jack, finally I was transferred to a higher level of support who asked me no questions. He just took my information and sent me a new jack for the price of shipping. I was in SHOCK. Finally someone with some courtesy and smarts. So my second one came and I gotten myself an IP and a desktop pc, so the new one got plugged into this new setup. This one worked better, but not much. I just exchanged a grocery list of one set of problems for a smaller milk and bread list. But the real eye-opener was when I recently had it with my internet provider because my internet signal had not been good since I got my service. (I had put in alot of tickets over the years, but nothing ever changed.) But I guess I made my dissatisfaction known enough and I have now received a 3-wk long amount of attention from my IP and something very unique started happening. To do the work they were doing over 3 weeks, they had to cut my internet several times. But my phone still worked! I mean, even when the internet was down, I could still use my MJ! Now, I don't know how to tell you to get your IP to step it up with their service, but your speed has alot to do with it. Now my speed is consistently good, each time I run my own speed test.

Cheap. Great when it works -- that is, if your standards are not high.
Call clarity not great. Calls drop, but can be called back if you reset the whole thing and then redial. All calls drop after 90 mins. Many calls never came in. VM messages come in late. But I think the problems have a cause that is not MJ's fault. Read my review. Customer service is absolutely terrible. It is chat only.

    The Skinny

    magicJack Revealed

    What is magicJack?

A magicJack is a small device that allows you to make Internet phone calls for cheap prices.

As of 2016, magicJack Express costs $39.95 plus shipping and handling. You get 3 months of free unlimited calling to the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. Additional years cost $35.

    How does magicJack work?

One of magicJack's top selling points is its ease of installation.

    1. Plug your phone into the magicJack
    2. Plug the magicJack into your computer
    3. Start making calls

Is there a special magicJack phone?

Nope! The magicJack device is what's known in the industry as an analog telephone adapter (ATA). You won't need a special phone in order to use magicJack.

What do you think of magicJack?

Many users have had a variety of issues with magicJack (as evidenced by the reviews). However, here are a couple of advantages of magicJack:

    1. Lowest Monthly Rates

Setting aside the fact that the first 6 months of phone service with magicJack are absolutely free, monthly rates are available for as little as $3.00 per month. Prices like that are extremely hard to complain about, and even some of our most scathing magicJack reviews still rate magicJack with 5 stars in the price category.

    2. Cheap Equipment

Any way you slice it, $39.95 is a great price to pay for the complete setup of a VoIP phone service that uses your existing phones. Other VoIP companies require specialized IP phones that can cost over $100, and an ATA adapter alone is often more than $50.

Even if the device runs into a problem and needs to be replaced, the low cost takes most of the sting out of a new purchase. In fact, with the money you'll save with magicJack's low monthly rate, the device practically pays for itself.

    3. Easy to Use

MagicJack is designed for people who have never heard of VoIP in the first place, and want a simple plug-and-play device that works right away. That's exactly what magicJack offers, and the new magicJack PLUS offers even more options. The old device required a constant connection to a computer to work, but the new one only needs to do so once to register. After that, just plug it into the wall and feel free to shut the computer off. The video below outlines how to use magicJack without a computer.

Previously the magicJack software was been reported by some as very difficult to remove. MagicJack software now comes with an easier to access uninstall option, so this point is no longer valid.

    MagicJack Customer Service

Unfortunately, magicJack does not have a customer service hotline. That means that the only way to resolve a service issue is through a high-traffic chat room, which occasionally has a slow response time as a result. Fortunately, the device is easy to install, so you'll likely never need the support. If you run into trouble, our best advice is to be patient with the chat, and see if the issue lies with your router configuration or Internet speed in the meantime.

If everything checks out and the chat system seems frustrating, just try doing something else for a while and wait for the chat system to get back to you. You can watch one of the many fan-made YouTube videos for magicJack support, try one of the links below to see if your issue is answered there, or even take care of checking your email while you wait. Sometimes, the best option is to simply wait a few hours for the peak traffic to die down, so that the support team has more time to dedicate to your needs. Either way, spending an hour or two researching and fixing any issues with the magicJack adapter is definitely worth the amount of money that you're saving with .

    Third-party magicJack Support

There are also some helpful blogs out there on the web that cover how to use magicJack if you still encounter trouble.

    Overall Analysis

In the end, and despite the issues that customers raise about magicJack service, we feel that magicJack offers a very low priced Residential VoIP service, especially for someone new to VoIP. However, there are a lot of negative customer reviews you should take into consideration. The extremely low monthly rate for unlimited phone calls is impossible to ignore, and the ease of installation further makes the case that magicJack's barebones VoIP service is one of the best in the industry.!

Don't take our word for it. We've got over 100 magicJack reviews for real magicJack customers. See what magicJack users have to say.

If you have used magicJack, here's you should do: Write a review. We could use your voice on our website.

Have something to say? Leave a comment about magicJack.

Have you used magicJack's service? Write a review. You can help other prospective customers make a good decision.
