magicJack Reviews

magicJack is an extremely cheap VoIP provider that works by using your existing Internet connection to make and receive calls. magicJack provides a plug-and-play device (like a USB drive) that you can connect to your computer or high-speed modem to start making local and long-distance calls. You can use magicJack for as little as $19.95/year per line.

With the newest magicJack Plus system, you don't have to have your computer on at all times in order to receive a call.

Is magicJack worth it?

I used the magic jack for the first year with no issues, mainly for work while working from home. After I renewed for 5 years I got recordings that I now had to purchase minutes to call conference lines for work that I had been using with no issues for the past year.

First year sound quality was excellent. Setup and use were very simple.
After I renewed after the first year I started getting messages that I need prepaid minutes to utilize work conference lines that I had been using for a year with no issues.

The phone quality of the MagicJack leaves much to be desired. Sometimes it is fine and other times it is terrible. Also, I upgraded to the MagicJack Plus so that I didn't have to keep my computer on to use the phone. The first MagicJack Plus that I received worked fine for about six months. Then it stopped working. I had to pay fee to replace the old one. The new one never worked when it was plugged into a wall socket and not to the computer. The MagicJack Plus is a piece of junk!

I paid $20 for international phone and I haven't used it for a while- my account is still active but they deleted my credit.
The customer care person is not caring customers or the company's stock holders.

Don't be fooled - the price isn't as low as they say nor is the service as good.
We got MJ and it installed with ease. As we began to have connection problems, I thought it best to power cycle the MJ+ device (which connects from the router to the phone's wall jack). When I touched it, it was *hot*! Going online, I found some other people experienced that as well and found their service also suffered. "Eureka!", I thought, "that's why people are calling us and finding nobody home even though we're here and nobody's on the phone." I followed the recommendation of using a long USB cable to separate the MJ device from the transformer. Things improved somewhat but the problems remained.
I got MJ support on chat - that's the only way to reach them as MJ doesn't give out any email addresses - and they suggested power cycling the MJ device and the router. After going through that same song and dance for multiple sessions, I finally demanded they connect me to Level 2 support or else I'd drop my account. Level 2 joined chat and walked me through changes to several router settings. Over the next several months things got no better.
I contacted support and again asked for their help. I gave them specific times and dates when callers attempted to reach us and couldn't, even though we were home and the phone was not in use. I asked them to please check and see what return code or message their server received to not complete the call. (For example, were you not able to even connect to our router? Were you able to connect to the router, but not the MJ device? Were you able to connect to both the router and MJ device but not the phone line itself?) Their answer was simple: just power cycle your router and MJ device. They would not hear of anything further or discuss anything which might actually get to the root of **why** this was happening. I'm going elsewhere.

Inexpensive -- if you keep it long enough to pay for the hardware Chat support Portability to other locations
- Monthly price sounded cheap, but didn't tell me that didn't include the box and additional 5-year license. - Inbound calls sometimes don't get connected - Support is *terrible* in terms of competency; save time and just do a power-reset as that's all they can tell you.

MagicJack ordered from the internet. I know it could be purchased elsewhere but it saved me the time to go out and get it.
MagicJack works as advertised. Clear sound, no distortion. No dropped calls. I was on a conference call for over an hour last week. Clear sound with no issues.
I can only speak of course about my particular experience but MagicJack replaced my bundled cable telephone service and works extremely well and is reliable.
The transfer of your home number is very easy, takes about 10 business days before you can receive calls.
Once I had magicjack plus up and running I cancelled by phone service with the cable provider. Also I was able to realize additional savings because I was no longer tied to the cable providers voice modem. I bought my own that will pay for itself in under a year.
There should be no fear in moving to the magicjack plus service. It might seem like it is too good to be 1. However MagicJack works exactly as advertised.
I would recommend this product to anyone who wants to replace their expensive bundled cable telephone service. You are already use to using in internet provided phone. This one is no different other then it costs a lot less.
Note I often have my home computer turned off. MagicJack Plus works without the need for the computer to be on.

Can be ordered from the internet, no customer service needed Easy to set up, instructions clear Everything necessary to start using the product came with it
MagicJack plus charges a yearly fee to keep your transfer telephone number. This seems unreasonable and unnecessary

Found good reviews, but they were not supported by my experience with the product or the company! Be careful, they appear to have hidden costs associated with the use of this product. They make many claims online and on their packaging, but it's different once you install their MagicJack device.

Not sure, since customer service could never assist in getting this setup on my computer.
I must say, that this was one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had! The agent had difficulty understanding my request so asked me over and over to repeat what I had already TYPED out. I really found it annoying that there is no phone number to call to speak to someone. I found that when you call, you are basically speaking to someone who knows iittle or nothing about the product and have EXTREMELY POOR customer service skills. My agent actually began speak ill of me because she couldn't explain how to resolve the issue. I waited 20-25 minutes for an experienced agent to come on the line!!!! She was better, but still didn't resolve the issue with my set up then abruptly ended the call by letting me know that they are CLOSED! If customer support is important to you then this is not the product or company for you! ugh!!!

i bought a magic jack to use about once a month for a one hour conference call for work. the phone quit after 20 minutes of talk time. after that i could call for about 5 minutes and then it hung up on me again and that was it for that number that day. after this, i tried it with talking to friends. yes, you get a 20 minute phone limit per call per phone number per day. i got a free phone number from text plus, free (after a few ads) and can talk for hours. bye-bye MJ, i got rooked out out of $40. but now all the wiser for it.

good for short calls. anything over 20 minutes gets cut off and you can call the same number back again for about 5 minutes and then cuts off.
needed it for once a month one hour conference call for work, not to run up my phone bill. only worked for 20 minutes.

I cant review it yet as I can't get connected. If this continues, my review will be "Don't buy it. It will probably go from bad to worse and it isn't worth all the trouble.

Don't know. Can't even get started with it.
I have been trying to set up the service on a Magic Jack I bought a year ago, and I can't even get started. They wouldn't accept two different Master cards I have, even though there is nothing wrong with them. They put it through twice on one card and 3 times on the other card, but all is pending as they can't decide whether they will honour one of the cards or not. One card I used was a gift master card I got at Christmas. I can't purchase anything else on it because it is held for 20 days while they make up their mind. I can't communicate with them as every number I am given leads me nowhere. I am not familiar with the internet as I am an old senior citizen and have no one to show me how to go about chatting on it. I want to speak to a human being who can fix this mess for me and get it set up as quickly as possible. I sure as hell don't want to be paying for a service I don't even have. Is there anyone there who actually has a phone number that will go directly to someone and not a recording? I seem to just go on wait and then they hang up on me. If this continues I'll throw the thing in the garbage and use every opportunity to trash them that I can. Have other people had this problem? When the voice on the phone asks for my account number I can't give it to them as I don't have one yet, but I have a phone number with them, and pin, and password. When I can't give an account number they just hang up. Help! Please!

I read all these CONS people are talking about but I don’t see the details; need more info folks!
CUSTOMER SERVICE: Yes you use a chat room. But in the dozen times I used it, I had a person on line in less than 5 seconds. Try to do that with telephone vocal help with other companies. And I don’t have to repeat myself as with telephone help. I have my question all written out before I get in the chat room then I paste it in. And they have helped me with critical problems. Like one time my latency was 2 seconds (talk delay). They got it down to 0.15 seconds for me. Now my Magicjack is almost as fast as a land line; definitely faster than a cell phone.
DROPPED CALLS: Now this might happen after 90 minutes but if you get dropped calls after 1 minute, check your internet provider or fix your router. I use cable internet instead of DSL. Cable works very good.
NOISY: Check the telephone and LAN wires coming out of the MagicJack. Make sure they’re not all twisted or bundled together. Keep them separate. That makes a big difference. Whatever outlet you use, don’t cover it with furniture. MagicJack needs airflow. It’s a small device that needs to breathe. Once/month un-power then re-power the MagicJack. That keeps connections fresh. Plug the jack into the 1st LAN connection on the router. Then 256 computers can hook to the router and not interrupt MagicJack. When done correctly, people think you’re on a land line.
BAD WALL ADAPTER: Don’t cover the MagicJack with furniture. It needs to breathe (let off the heat). BTW, most everyone plugs theirs in on a vertical wall. I use an extension cord to get the MagicJack horizontal. It rests better that way. And it takes a lot of stress out of the connections; which sooner or later will break.
PORTING NUMBERS: Yes you have to pay $10/year to port your special number. MagicJack has to rent that number – every year!
“They now want you to buy prepaid minutes to make local calls ” Huh? I live in Idaho and have called almost every state and never ran into requiring ‘prepaid minutes’. But some SD phone lines do require everyone to pay rent to use. I shun those phone companies.
MagicJack has been measured the fastest latency of VOIP service. I.e., Land lines are the fastest. MagicJack is 2nd. Other VOIPs and cell phones are a distant 3rd, etc.,
I appreciate that if I’m on the phone and another person calls, MagicJack will take a message (after preset # rings you set up). Then MagicJack emails you the message as a .wav file. Works every time.
Get the free app. It’s amazing. If I’m in the grocery store and my MagicJack rings at home, my cell phone will start ringing. So I can answer MagicJack out of the house. Plus MagicJack looks at my cell phone contacts and displays who is calling. My house phone doesn't display the name because I don’t have names programmed into my home cordless phone. Get this: If I’m talking on the ‘house phone’ and another person calls, my cell phone rings. My wife will answer the cell phone and start talking. So we have 2 different conversations going on AT THE SAME TIME on the same phone number! Amazing. One time our house power went out. We still got our phone calls because the cell phone app was still working. And the app has very clear sound. The app has about a 0.3s latency but that is still faster than a regular cell phone! Are we using cell phone minutes? When I checked my cell phone bill the MagicJack minutes didn't show up in cell minutes or data usage minutes. So I’m wondering how they do that. And the app logs all your MagicJack calls. That’s been handy sometimes to see when people called.
I also have Google Voice. The latency is not near as good. But if you need to call SD for free (see above complaints), then use Google Voice. However, soon Google Voice won’t be free.
For international calls use PennyTalk mobile. It’s cheaper and you don’t have to pay a connection fee (you do if you use a land line). But you can’t let it sit since there’s a 99¢ monthly fee. So like MagicJack you will lose money if you just let it sit.
Overall, I've been very amazed with MagicJack.

Shortest latency of any VOIP service (critical for anyone); fast customer help; cheap; amazing Android app: can talk to 2 separate numbers at the same time w/o using a call-conference feature or using HOLD. Extremely easy-to-use website.
Dropped call after 90 minutes. But I didn’t mind. My mom can talk a lot. I do have to dial 10 digit local numbers. But I don’t know if that’s bad. Not sure where the keypad beeps are coming from about every 10 minutes. Is that MagicJack or me pressing my cheek on the phone?
Yes

I like voip and have used it and recommended it for more than 5 years, all on Magic Jack. However, when porting my MJ numbers I ran into trouble. The first one went smoothly, but took a month to complete. The second one has taken more than 2 months, and could not be completed because I had not yet paid the $32 ransom that went unknown for most of that time. I had the account number and ID correct, but they were still implementing the ransom, so my request was turned down about 10 times. MJ has been a good service, but its business model of angering its bases users seems stupid and short-sighted. Thus I do NOT recommend MJ to future users. There are alternatives that will treat you better.

Five years of good service on old MJ and two MJ+s.
Charged me $32 to port my number to Ooma. This is dumber than their lack of call forwarding. I guess they are trying to go out of business by making long term user angry at some minor request.

    The Skinny

    magicJack Revealed

    What is magicJack?

A magicJack is a small device that allows you to make Internet phone calls for cheap prices.

As of 2016, magicJack Express costs $39.95 plus shipping and handling. You get 3 months of free unlimited calling to the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. Additional years cost $35.

    How does magicJack work?

One of magicJack's top selling points is its ease of installation.

    1. Plug your phone into the magicJack
    2. Plug the magicJack into your computer
    3. Start making calls

Is there a special magicJack phone?

Nope! The magicJack device is what's known in the industry as an analog telephone adapter (ATA). You won't need a special phone in order to use magicJack.

What do you think of magicJack?

Many users have had a variety of issues with magicJack (as evidenced by the reviews). However, here are a couple of advantages of magicJack:

    1. Lowest Monthly Rates

Setting aside the fact that the first 6 months of phone service with magicJack are absolutely free, monthly rates are available for as little as $3.00 per month. Prices like that are extremely hard to complain about, and even some of our most scathing magicJack reviews still rate magicJack with 5 stars in the price category.

    2. Cheap Equipment

Any way you slice it, $39.95 is a great price to pay for the complete setup of a VoIP phone service that uses your existing phones. Other VoIP companies require specialized IP phones that can cost over $100, and an ATA adapter alone is often more than $50.

Even if the device runs into a problem and needs to be replaced, the low cost takes most of the sting out of a new purchase. In fact, with the money you'll save with magicJack's low monthly rate, the device practically pays for itself.

    3. Easy to Use

MagicJack is designed for people who have never heard of VoIP in the first place, and want a simple plug-and-play device that works right away. That's exactly what magicJack offers, and the new magicJack PLUS offers even more options. The old device required a constant connection to a computer to work, but the new one only needs to do so once to register. After that, just plug it into the wall and feel free to shut the computer off. The video below outlines how to use magicJack without a computer.

Previously the magicJack software was been reported by some as very difficult to remove. MagicJack software now comes with an easier to access uninstall option, so this point is no longer valid.

    MagicJack Customer Service

Unfortunately, magicJack does not have a customer service hotline. That means that the only way to resolve a service issue is through a high-traffic chat room, which occasionally has a slow response time as a result. Fortunately, the device is easy to install, so you'll likely never need the support. If you run into trouble, our best advice is to be patient with the chat, and see if the issue lies with your router configuration or Internet speed in the meantime.

If everything checks out and the chat system seems frustrating, just try doing something else for a while and wait for the chat system to get back to you. You can watch one of the many fan-made YouTube videos for magicJack support, try one of the links below to see if your issue is answered there, or even take care of checking your email while you wait. Sometimes, the best option is to simply wait a few hours for the peak traffic to die down, so that the support team has more time to dedicate to your needs. Either way, spending an hour or two researching and fixing any issues with the magicJack adapter is definitely worth the amount of money that you're saving with .

    Third-party magicJack Support

There are also some helpful blogs out there on the web that cover how to use magicJack if you still encounter trouble.

    Overall Analysis

In the end, and despite the issues that customers raise about magicJack service, we feel that magicJack offers a very low priced Residential VoIP service, especially for someone new to VoIP. However, there are a lot of negative customer reviews you should take into consideration. The extremely low monthly rate for unlimited phone calls is impossible to ignore, and the ease of installation further makes the case that magicJack's barebones VoIP service is one of the best in the industry.!

Don't take our word for it. We've got over 100 magicJack reviews for real magicJack customers. See what magicJack users have to say.
