Residential VoIP

  • Cheapest VoIP Services of 2026

Here is what makes for the cheapest VoIP provider:

    1. Offers a contract. Longer contracts will make for lower monthly rates.
    2. Provides unlimited calling. Free local and long distance calling will make for a lower monthly bill.
    3. Delivers cheap international rates. Per minute international rates should be lower than their competitors.
    4. Maintains reliable service. Quality of service and customer support are important for a VoIP phone system.

  • Residential VoIP Requirements

Lingo made unauthorized changes to our account, including canceling active phone numbers without permission. A basic request to forward a phone line took two months, and their cancellation process has been intentionally difficult. We are still waiting on a final invoice. We didn't realize how badly we were being scammed until our new provider started looking into everything. We had phone numbers on our account that belonged to other businesses, and we were supposedly renting phones from Lingo. Now they are claiming we own them. No one at Lingo seems to know what they are doing, and getting anything resolved is nearly impossible. I work with many phone vendors and have never had this many issues. This is not how a phone company should operate. Our new phone company is more affordable and has provided fantastic service. I regret letting this drag on for as long as it did.

there are no pros. There are so many other VOIP that are so much better.
Unauthorized account changes, canceled phone numbers without permission, incompetent support, phone forwarding request took two months, difficult cancellation process, delayed final invoice, deceptive billing practices, phones on account for other businesses, claimed rented phones now said to be owned, lack of accountability, unhelpful and uninformed staff, impossible to get anything resolved, overpriced service, poor value compared to new provider, wasted time and resources, regret not switching sooner.

Horrible - Dishonest - Useless Customer Service - Lie about contracts They lie right off the bat when they call you. At least the guy who calls to hook you speaks your language. After that it's accents you can't translate from call centers with a million other voices in the background. I agreed to their services in 2018 with free first month and 6th month. That was a lie. Never happened! Tried the customer service on that. Of course they say they don't know anything about that. Customer service person I can't understand. Ask if there is someone who can speak better English and am told "NO" Can't email me. Doesn't care. Over the years, they have added about $25 to my bill. Bogus taxes - unexplained "Other Charges" Got a letter a few months ago with a bill. The bill was for my gradually ever-increasing bill amount, the letter says I'm being charged another $20+ for some other taxes they had failed to include on my bill for the last year. Paid that. Couldn't bring myself to suffer through a useless episode with overseas customer service agent. Finally sick of them, switched the line over to a cell with Verizon. Lingo continuing to bill me for a service they have not been providing for two months. Paid it once. The second time I call Customer service. Hung up on. Call again 15 minutes on hold - another guy I can't understand. What I am able to get from him: Verizon didn't notify them (A lie, Verizon can't use the number until Lingo releases it - I waited several days for that to happen) I am suppose to still owe the bills + more to come which will include a $200 Early termination charge!!! Say I am under some other contract that they can't provide me with. Just simply a lying scamming company . By the way, they were called Birch Communications when I signed up. They changed to Lingo somewhere along the line. Not BBB accredited - No shock there I'll update this when I get my next statement.

They buy lines from ATT and resell them cheaper than ATT can somehow. Well at least to start with...
They will lie to get you in and then continue to change the rules and hide behind customer service agents you can't communicate with.

I signed up for my elderly mom, who cannot use a cell phone. We had been happy with the service, and the price was better than AT&T, plus included 1500 minutes of long distance, which AT&T does not unless you pay a lot extra. Recently my mom's phone was out of order, and we had to wait a week to get it back working. (It was a line/cable problem.) In addition to a terribly long wait, customer service was absolutely horrible! Excessive wait times, incorrect trouble tickets, ZERO customer service on weekends. Today I am calling them about a billing question, and so far have been on hold for 1 hour and 45 minutes SO FAR. I don't want to call back and start all over, so I've got the phone on speaker and on the charger.

This is uncalled for - -absolutely no customer service when the land line will not work. Several attempts to call only to be put on hold for half an hour and then get disconnected multiple times. I strongly suggest NOT using this company. I originally had SAGE which was great but it was bought out by Birch - not as good of service - -and then Birch was purchased / acquired by Lingo Communications and there is NO SERVICE! Believe these reviews when you read them!

NONE - customer service is non-existent
No customer service and I mean NONE. To be put on hold for half hour or longer and get disconnected and have to start over is nuts! This is technical support, billing, every avenue I attempted to reach a person!

This is the 2nd time I have become frustrated requiring time to write a review for my Mom who has this service in West TN. It is impossible to have reliable service from this company. They now claim that they need to bury a cable under ground as the static and dysfunctionality has continued. It is particularly poor after a hard rain. My Mom has a business and uses her landline as her cell phone does not work well in her home (only by one window/door). Thus, she has essentially had virtually no service for many days. They keep saying they will send someone to bury the line, but it does not occur. They continue to make excuses rather than fixing the problem. This situation has become untenable and I plan on notifying the business business bureau and ask the to investigate further.

None that we can tell given the service and lack thereof
Difficult to get repairs done in a timely fashion. Static on line frequently which limits ability to hear callers.

I was a Happy LINGO customer for 10+ Years. I was Happy because I only had to call customer service 1 time in that span and they sent me new equipment and everything was back on line quickly! I have spoken with no less than 10 people at IMPACT-LINGO in the last 2 months and I honestly feel bad for the employees who work there. Instead of getting to the bottom of my problems ... I got canned responses and no solutions. I have had no less than 2 different Trouble Id's and they have sent me 2 different pieces of equipment. The second time they even lied about shipping the equipment. I have spoken with Sarah, Sierra, Sarah, Sierra, Brooklyn, Jeane, Asha, Kari, Autumn, Cody, and Vanessa R (Supervisor) If you see this post ... I recommend you start looking for another job because the LEFT HAND isn't talking to the RIGHT HAND!! This is BY FAR the WORST customer service incident I have ever had!! Two months of back and forth and finally today I am told that the current equipment purchased by Impact isn't compatible with the Time Warner Cable equipment I am using. ????? I honestly quit. IMPACT ... YOU KILLED my customer LOYALTY to LINGO!!! Good Riddens! Dennis 928-941-1911

Someone else commented that they just don't care. This is true. It's a shame that it's true for even one more person, let alone all those who won't bother to write about it. Not everybody will call them about it either because it takes too long and is too much trouble, as noted. I have decided, yesterday, to switch and leave this unconscionably poor service behind, after maybe 12 years. I'm concerned about my blood pressure after being on the phone with them every single day this week -- about two technical problems as yet unsolved and no communication about. I don't understand how they will keep customers after they royally botched this transition with Impact Telecom, and it's now August 2019, months after things should be going so well that it's unnoticeable. Worst conversion/integration of companies and technologies that I have personally experienced in 40 years. They have failed in the areas of communication, reliability, empathy, response time, being solution-oriented, allowing escalation of complaints, response from escalation, customer experience, true customer care, and competence. I would go on to describe my actual issues but it is not worth my time anymore. Just know that if you need to talk with them about anything you will be sorely disappointed in the technical service and customer service experience with the employees who are imprisoned by "our procedure." This is a warning and for the trouble and loss they've caused me I hope many will read this and not only avoid them but cancel service with them. They don't deserve to be paid for the poor business practices they represent. Call for yourself and see what I mean. The only reason I went about "1" in my rating on price is that they have compared favorably with what they claim to do for you. I truly wanted to make my "1" ratings zeroes but the only option there would have been to leave them all blank.

Most horrible customer service and they simply don't care how many consumers are upset . We were with Priimus telecommunications for 15 yrs no issues but since Birch and now Lingo took over its became a nightmare. My international service stopped working and I called 10 times for last 5 days and no one to talk to .. Hold time range from 25- to 75 minutes and then the rep doesn't know what you are referring to so they transfer you again yet to another incompetent customer service rep who again simply doesn't know why there is an issue with long distance calls for 5 days . I asked to talk to supervisor, no luck so I canceled he service!! The cheap cost is not worth it .Bad customer service , horrible communication and lame service all around Goodbye Lingo never again .!!!

    Cheap rates
Poor customer service , luck of communications , rude answer service , hold time to access 75m , long distance issues , luck of knowledge from rep who are in tech support and suppose to resolve issues .

We were happy with Lingo service since 2005. However, the current customer service from their current parent company (Birch Telecom - since March 2016) is of no value. It is easy to reach the company at their sales line (still the old Lingo organization), but a nightmare to reach customer service (Birch Telecom). We spent several hours on hold today before we were able to reach a customer service representative to cancel our account -- such bad service, we could not even make phone calls any more. We received an automated cancelation confirmation e-mail with information about how to e-mail the company. E-mail messages to [email protected] are rejected -- "You have reached an email address that is not monitored for responses." Additionally, the cancellation e-mail told us they would send a return label (and charge us $9.95 for the label) to return a Lingo adapter. The problem is that we never received a Lingo adapter; we used our own equipment to connect to the service. They also threatened to charge us $75.00 equipment recovery fee for equipment we never received from Lingo. At one time, Lingo was a reliable US company. Now, Lingo is a scam company that should be avoided -- don't even consider trying any of their services -- find a reliable competitor for VoIP phone service.

Good company when they first started. In 2005 they were a reliable US company. Reasonable price for unlimited calling in North America and Western Europe.
NO MEANINGFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE. Wait time for customer service is frequently more than 60 minutes. Try to charge cancellation fee even after more than ten years service. Try to charge Equipment Recovery fee when they did not provide any equipment.

A continuation/update of my experience with Lingo. To recap, reception was always awful and sometimes impossible. Every problem except getting paid was unfixable. Their email was turned on and off repeatedly. The contact phone number for both customer service and tech support was turned on and off. I emailed them on December 7 as a final cancellation after repeated emails and calls over 7 months asking them to roll back my account to where I had understood it to be, the basic account. My payment should have been under $20 as advertised. As of my last payment they had me up over $43. To add insult to injury, when I called to confirm that the account was closed and a refund for the remainder of the month would be forth coming, I was told they do not refund anything. I was told that emailing my cancellation was not acceptable to them. So, keep in mind, they only do things officially using a medium that does not allow one to document their actions. In addition, they are mailing me a shipping label, but I was told it definitely will not arrive before January but I would not be billed. We'll see how that turns out. Heads up, they merged with Birch Communications.

    None
Bad quality, deceptive billing, customer service is turned on and off with no notice (both email and phone), they are based in Canada and do not participate in the government oversight program, they add services and increase the bill with no notice of any kind. When asked to roll back to previous service they ignore, deflect (email saying their system is down and they will get back to me and then don't respond at all after a month and a half) and out right lie.

I was with PhonePower for 5 years and recently "ported" to CallCentric. I am so glad I did! This summer, we learned that our home phone had been ringing busy for over a week and important calls had not gotten through. After much hassle with PP, I researched other Voip providers. Bottom line: I now have superb technical support, excellent custom features, and a much lower bill. Other than getting no calls for weeks, I was unhappy for a long time about other issues. #1: calls going through Nomorobo spam filtering rang once at home before Nomorobo killed spam. Calls that went through had the Callerid screwed up. The PP web interface was always very slow, clunky, and limited options, such as a small limit on blocked numbers, etc. I did not realize that other Voip providers now offer modern, fully customizable features, web gui and mobile apps. The PhonePower billing, rates, and policies are abominable compared to competitive providers. For example, when my credit card expired and got a new expiration date, as they do every few years, I don't think I ever received any notice. If they didn't email, they certainly knew the phone number to call me on! That was 9 months before recent issues and I did solve the billing problem. By the way, the online bills never show a name, jut an address. Which makes it more difficult to port a phone number out. Probably not by accident: "Hotel California" that is easy to get in and a huge pain to check out. Buyer beware. (I did get ported with the help of CallCentric support asking for a screen shot of the payment screen with my name on it). Five years ago PP was the best I could do after Verizon dumped us. Now, not so much.

Decent network and voice quality for most of the past five years
Weeks to resolve an issue of calls not going through; poor process for spam filter and Callerid; expensive and poor billing, rates, and policies; slow, clunky, restrictive software; not competitive in 2023

I have been a customer since 2009. The service meets my needs with the main line and a cloned line, giving me the ability to have 2 calls simultaneously. From the beginning I have brought my own adapter (picking it from the list of supported devices). I recently replaced it and discovered that the automated provisioning scripts don't support the setup of the second line. That's okay -- I contacted PhonePower and they put me in touch with one of their technicians who was able to give me enough information so I could manually configure my adapter. Recently (August 2023), I noticed that my adapter showed everything was good but calls weren't coming through (going immediately to voicemail) and then one of the 2 lines became inactive. I contacted support via email and continued to work on the problem (I'm in IT so I don't mind digging into problems and stepping through a reconfiguration process). Using my notes from the manual setup, I got things working again. I also noticed that my firmware on my adapter was significantly out of date and updated it too. I had it fixed before customer support reached out to assist. Things ran well for a number of weeks and then suddenly calls were going directly to voicemail again. That's actually not a bad thing since PhonePower automatically sends a copy of the voice mail to my email. So, I typically screen my calls anyway. To fix it, I have simply unplugged my adapter for a few minutes and then everything works fine -- I can call the house phone from my mobile and everything rings through just fine. I don't know if this is a problem at PhonePower or with my adapter or perhaps my internet provider. I'll dig into it one of these days but it isn't on the top of my list to fix. The amount of spam calls has been reduced by use of NoMoRobo which Phone Power provides free along with good instructions to setup. So, overall, I'm happy with PhonePower. The sound of the calls is excellent; customer service has been responsive and helpful; and it does a pretty good job filtering out spam calls. Some reviewers have reported caller id not working in the past. All I can say is that it has always worked for me since 2009.

Reasonably priced phone service with multiple line capabilities. I love the customer service -- both being US based and very helpful.
With a BYOD adapter, the automated provisioning/configuration scripts may not configure the second line (if you are subscribed to it) and may require manual configuration.

I have been a happy PhonePower customer for many years. Yet 2 years ago the caller ID Name stopped working. A very useful feature. A dozen calLs always got the same response: working on the problem, no forecast for resolution. NEVER FIXED. 2 months ago the speed dial add/delete function would in error delete all speed dials. STILL NO FIX. And the website is SLOW, SLOW, SLOW. SUMMATION: they aren't investing in support/upgrades. They don't care. Probably think VOIP phones are going away -- due to ubiquitous use of cell phones. -- and they want to maximize profits by not paying for support functions other that a call center person.

Watch out, they auto renew with no notice and will not return any funds should you want to cancel. You cannot not tell them to cancel auto renew unless you call within 30days of the renewal. This happened to me 2X; we all lead busy lives and one must wait over 20 min on hold to even get through to a rep.

It is a limited service. At first it was unlimited minutes, but after a few
months we received first email about crossing the limit and if it happens
again we will be a subject to a different plan. Customer service informed us
about the imaginary limit when company does not make money. It is false
      advertising, buyers beware.

Cell phone service to many internatiomal destinations, but with a caviat.
      False advertising and harasment.

Paid everything up front and barely used their service. After the two years I had a hard time finding the phone hardware because I hadn't used it in a year (and we moved). When I didn't want to continue with their service things went south. Horrible customer service. I tried to work with them but they were bullies. They wanted their hardware back. Ok, that makes sense. Well, I eventually found the equipment and I told them I found it and would send it in. They still put collectors out for me with annoying daily phone calls even though I TOLD THEM I HAD THE EQUIPMENT.
I am self employed and I have never treated anyone like that. Shame shame Phone Power.
The worst part is that they wanted to charge $99.50 for a box that was clearly less than $40 in cost.
Warning to all - don't trust their business practices. They have no concern for anyone but themselves.

I am having phonepower service currently. I have two different brand cordless set connected to two lines. The call quality is great, however the service is not reliable. I am not very pleased with the interface setting up call forwarding/simultaneous ringing through web interface. Very confusing and not straight forward. I do not want to have a primary phonepower service. I am not going to renew after 2 year service. Almost every month I see phonepower techincal difficulties such as (out of service for 30 mins or cannot dial toll free numbers). I do not like this kinda interruption. Otherwise, I stayed an hour long interview and then stayed hour long outgoing call and recieved long calls all worked backed to back fine with crystal clear call quality. I have downstream(30mbps) and upstream(3mbps) any given point which is exceptionally good for decent call quality. I will go back to viatalk which is more reliable than phonepower. I would not recommend phonepower right at this time, let them polish up their quality and then worth trying.

Crystal quality phone calls when it works. Internet cable which is high speed very almost zero downtime. At a same time connected two lines works fine. International calls works great.Setup is fairly easy. I use xp or 7 shouldn't matter.stayed on long calls without interruption.
      (a) I have a hard time to setup simultaneous ringing/call forwarding through web interface. In my opinion it is very confusing and not straight forward. (b) I can't get more than one month call records which doesn't make any sense. (c) Service is not reliable which bothers me. When I pick a voip service as a primary phone service it better be reliable. Every month I see that phonepower goes out of service for an hour or can't dial toll free phones. Once I call customer service they say we are working on the problems, which is not good for me. I had a better service with Viatalk and I am switching back to them . The price is not cheap like magicjack either. So paying a premium I expect a good quality service which in my opinion phonepower doesn't deliver. Once they polish up their quality I might consider . At this point of time I don't recommend phonepower.
