magicJack Reviews

magicJack is an extremely cheap VoIP provider that works by using your existing Internet connection to make and receive calls. magicJack provides a plug-and-play device (like a USB drive) that you can connect to your computer or high-speed modem to start making local and long-distance calls. You can use magicJack for as little as $19.95/year per line.

With the newest magicJack Plus system, you don't have to have your computer on at all times in order to receive a call.

Is magicJack worth it?

We recommend that anyone interested in buying a magicJack read the user reviews here first.

After been in business for over 40 years, one has seen management patterns
that repeat themselves while on the way to bankruptcy.

Magic Jack is a company with over 1000 bad reviews!!! Over 1000 deceived,
unsatisfied and disgusted customers!

Customer service and technical support is non existent!!!

The product does not work and the CON-ARTISTS just hide offering you no
solution for the problems!

It is cheap, but how good it is if it does not work properly?

The product is a cheap, cowardly inefficient and unscrupulous as the
management behind it !

Don't make the same mistake I did, read the reviews:

QUESTION? Did anyone's calls decrease when they got their Majic Jack?

I ported my business line to Majic Jack a while back. My business calls were
about 30 to 40 per day before I got Majic Jack on that business line.
After going with Majic Jack, I get from 5 to 7 calls a day and most of them
are telemarketers. I am confused. Chat support says they are Tech, but
when I asked how to check this, they said, "We have Call logs." I have
checked my call logs and they are the same as my actual call.

What pisses me off is my brother called me from out of town when he had an
accident and said I did not answer. He said he called many many times, but no
answer.
I checked my call logs and his calls were not there. I checked his phone and
there was the calls. So, what the hell!!!

Tech is NO HELP!!! Has anyone experienced this? I hate to go out of
business thinking the economy went dead the day I got Majic Jack.
Any ideas?

Email me if you have an idea

The actual MJ works well
Is it possible that calls are not going through and my customers are not getting me? Calls went from 30 to 40 a day before MJ. Now, 5 to 7 a day. WHY???
Yes

okay I purchased the Magic Jack yesterday. got it home had it set up and
making calls within 5 minutes!! yes seriously!!! working great...called to
Vancouver and Alberta both calls nice and clear and crisp. And you just
cannot beat the price for long distance calling. $35 USD for a full YEAR of
service. When I told my brother about it he thought I'd said $35 per month
and that it wasn't such a great deal....I clarified...35 bucks USD a YEAR!!
or 5 YEARS for $100 USD...that is just crazy cheap! oh yeah ...purchase price
$45 CDN at Walmart... that INCLUDES 1 full year of service. Signed up in
minutes and paid my $10 USD for a CDN telephone number!! I'm kicking myself
for not doing this sooner....just figured out I have given Shaw about $1550
CDN for the last 5 years of phone service...and could have been using Magic
Jack!!

That would have saved me about $1400 CDN in the last 5 years!! I do have a
high speed internet service so I think that is an important factor. someone
on a slower (non high-speed) may not be as impressed!

If you are in Canada there are a few drawbacks to be aware of :
(1) you cannot Port your current CDN phone number (at this time)...they say
that they are working on this issue but are they really?? Since they charge
an extra $10 US a year for giving you a random CDN -based phone number...and
an extra $10 US if you choose a CDN number from a list....so they are making
good money on extras so they may never work on getting numbers ported to MJ.
But seriously why the heck would they NOT be doing this??? they could get a
ton more customers in Canada if they allowed porting. we Canucks like our
telephone number and don't want to have to learn another one! :-) So anyway
c'mon Magic Jack people get PORTING FOR CANADA!!

(2) So you get a random CDN phone number...well not totally random...you get
a choice from several areas codes in your province...but the exchanges that
are combined with those area codes may not be anywhere near where you live.
Why is this an issue you ask. Because anyone that lives in your local area
will have to pay long distance charges because they will have to dial a 1-
prior to dialing the 10 digit CDN phone number.

So Yes, you get FREE UNLIMITED calling to USA and Canada for your Magic Jack
phone but any of your friends and family and any business that is not on
Magic Jack are paying Long distance charges to call you...even if they live
across the street! Possibly this is different in the city that the area code+
exchange actually applies to but it just doesn't work in small town BC. The
area code I picked is one that covers my city but the exchange that follows
the area code is for Victoria. Oh wait...I guess those people in Victoria
won't have to pay Long Distance Charges to call me but someone down my block
does. Going to have to get some friends in Victoria. I guess they figure if
every one gets smart and changes over to magic Jack then there's no longer an
issue.

(3)Support: I have spent a few hours today trying to solve these issues with
Magic Jack...or at least get them to admit there's an issue but they just
keep blaming the "other service providers" for charging the long distance
rates for a local call coming to me. Maybe everyone will get smart and start
using Magic Jack!!

I can't believe how good it works! (oh yeah we did try Vonage 10 or 12 years
ago and it wasn't that good....probably better now because high speed
internet is in every home!)

CHEAP like Borscht! Works well....very good sound...crisp and clear! Did I mention cheap...can't believe people are still paying $20- $40 a month to the phone company....this is $35 USD PER YEAR!!
Supports is terrible. No Porting of Canadian Phone Number. Limited exchange numbers for your chosen area code.

My guess is that my Magic Jack Plus is non-functional. Power supply is
apparently dead and it looks like it took the Magic Jack with it. Lights up
and the computer recognizes something is there when plugged into the USB port
but no software opens and it will not connect a phone. Tried to find
troubleshooting information on their site but there is none. At least
nothing helpful. Decided to order a new one. Tried twice. No idea if none,
one, or two are ordered. There has been no confirmation email sent. I would
just go out and buy another but then maybe I will have three. What a sucky
company. You may buy one and be fairly content considering the price. I
was. Now? Not so much. Oh yeah, if you like to talk, the Magic Jack service
will hang up at 1 hour without warning. Does not affect incoming calls and
Magic Jack customer service will not admit this.

Cheap
Zero customer service. Poor, poor, poor web site. Hangs up phone calls at or past one hour.

Magic Jack is very inexpensive and worked well when I first bought it in
2010. Over the years it has gotten worse to the point that it does down
once/day for me now.
I don't recommend it. Also, their customer service is lousy!

My original [and only] magicjack plus device was faulty upon receipt. The
ports did not hold connections and therefore the cables were never well
seated. I made multiple calls to MagicJack customer service, only to be told
I would have to pay for a new device. So I bundled the whole thing in a ball
of tape.

Over the last few years, the device intermittently did not work and became
unreliable. Last week I was no longer able to receive incoming calls
[although the calls did go into the MagicJack voice mail box] and despite
the fact there was no dial tone, I was able to complete outgoing calls as
long as they did not require using the touch pad on the phone. I contacted
support again and was told they would 'check into it' soon. When asked to
define 'soon' I was told to be patient as I would be receiving an email in 24
to 48 hours -- that was 3 days ago and I have yet to received an email.
Today the magicjack quit working entirely.

Lucky for me, last week I contacted another VOIP carrier and will be
transferring my telephone number to a dependable service. Unfortunately,
MagicJack has refused to release the port to the new carrier [so I can keep
my phone number]. After a chat with MJ customer service regarding this
issue, I was again told to be patient and they would 'look into it' in a
couple of days. That chat too, took place several days ago and according to
my new service carrier the port has still not been released.

I can only state that you do get what you pay for. Before you buy into this
service, ask yourself if the aggravation is worth the price.

it was cheap
it was cheap -- literally the device itself is substandard. The people in MJ customer service are polite but vague and their technical support team appears to be undertrained or not trained.

Works better than Vonage and it the price is much cheaper 100 for the
magicjack and it includes 5 years of service. Unbeatable price, I like the
magic jack phone app. I never have any problems with the quality. Works
perfect. I also transferred my old Vonage number to my magicjack and have
that forward to my cell. Before Vonage I had that number with ATT. I had the
number since 1995 so I did not want to lose it. Customer service is like any
other company. If I have questions I chat with them on the website. They are
fast and reliable.

Works perfect and no other company can beat that price.
No Cons, MagicJack and their app works perfect.

Terrible choice. Regret ever getting involved with these people. MagicJack
was a technical headache from the beginning, never properly worked. Customer
service is very poor, don't know their products and make refunds a total
nightmare. Technical service only accepts live chat NO PHONE CALLS .... even
though they are a phone company. $60 wasted. If you're ready to throw money
away or deal with huge headaches give them a try, otherwise move on!!

None.

This service is very dependent on your internet service. I have FIOS and I
rarely have problems with MagicJack calls. Sometimes, after 20+ mins of talk,
it will drop the call. I have noticed that sometimes sending a fax thru
MagicJack doesn't work very well. I've not had to contact service since I
initially got the device 3 years ago. No problems with the hardware or the
service. I recommend.

It sounds like a great deal and maybe for some it it. But for me it has be
very frustrating. I have tried for a year to get consistent service to work
and it has let me down over and over. Sometimes it works fine as intended and
at other times it simply won't work. Often a call can come in but I can not
call out... at times when I really need it to work it has stopped working all
together. Yes, it's a great price but only on the days it decides to actually
work. The rest of the time it is a total piece of crap. It would be
interesting to read my blood pressure on those non-working days...LOL. I am
definitely starting my search for an alternative.... which will not be some
overpriced BS like AT&T. Maybe someday MJ will be a great value but
presently it may give me a stroke or heart attack; and that is not a good
value.

Cheap.
Inconsistent functionality.

    The Skinny

    magicJack Revealed

    What is magicJack?

A magicJack is a small device that allows you to make Internet phone calls for cheap prices.

As of 2016, magicJack Express costs $39.95 plus shipping and handling. You get 3 months of free unlimited calling to the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. Additional years cost $35.

    How does magicJack work?

One of magicJack's top selling points is its ease of installation.

    1. Plug your phone into the magicJack
    2. Plug the magicJack into your computer
    3. Start making calls

Is there a special magicJack phone?

Nope! The magicJack device is what's known in the industry as an analog telephone adapter (ATA). You won't need a special phone in order to use magicJack.

What do you think of magicJack?

Many users have had a variety of issues with magicJack (as evidenced by the reviews). However, here are a couple of advantages of magicJack:

    1. Lowest Monthly Rates

Setting aside the fact that the first 6 months of phone service with magicJack are absolutely free, monthly rates are available for as little as $3.00 per month. Prices like that are extremely hard to complain about, and even some of our most scathing magicJack reviews still rate magicJack with 5 stars in the price category.

    2. Cheap Equipment

Any way you slice it, $39.95 is a great price to pay for the complete setup of a VoIP phone service that uses your existing phones. Other VoIP companies require specialized IP phones that can cost over $100, and an ATA adapter alone is often more than $50.

Even if the device runs into a problem and needs to be replaced, the low cost takes most of the sting out of a new purchase. In fact, with the money you'll save with magicJack's low monthly rate, the device practically pays for itself.

    3. Easy to Use

MagicJack is designed for people who have never heard of VoIP in the first place, and want a simple plug-and-play device that works right away. That's exactly what magicJack offers, and the new magicJack PLUS offers even more options. The old device required a constant connection to a computer to work, but the new one only needs to do so once to register. After that, just plug it into the wall and feel free to shut the computer off. The video below outlines how to use magicJack without a computer.

Previously the magicJack software was been reported by some as very difficult to remove. MagicJack software now comes with an easier to access uninstall option, so this point is no longer valid.

    MagicJack Customer Service

Unfortunately, magicJack does not have a customer service hotline. That means that the only way to resolve a service issue is through a high-traffic chat room, which occasionally has a slow response time as a result. Fortunately, the device is easy to install, so you'll likely never need the support. If you run into trouble, our best advice is to be patient with the chat, and see if the issue lies with your router configuration or Internet speed in the meantime.

If everything checks out and the chat system seems frustrating, just try doing something else for a while and wait for the chat system to get back to you. You can watch one of the many fan-made YouTube videos for magicJack support, try one of the links below to see if your issue is answered there, or even take care of checking your email while you wait. Sometimes, the best option is to simply wait a few hours for the peak traffic to die down, so that the support team has more time to dedicate to your needs. Either way, spending an hour or two researching and fixing any issues with the magicJack adapter is definitely worth the amount of money that you're saving with .

    Third-party magicJack Support

There are also some helpful blogs out there on the web that cover how to use magicJack if you still encounter trouble.

    Overall Analysis

In the end, and despite the issues that customers raise about magicJack service, we feel that magicJack offers a very low priced Residential VoIP service, especially for someone new to VoIP. However, there are a lot of negative customer reviews you should take into consideration. The extremely low monthly rate for unlimited phone calls is impossible to ignore, and the ease of installation further makes the case that magicJack's barebones VoIP service is one of the best in the industry.!

Don't take our word for it. We've got over 100 magicJack reviews for real magicJack customers. See what magicJack users have to say.

If you have used magicJack, here's you should do: Write a review. We could use your voice on our website.

Have something to say? Leave a comment about magicJack.

Have you used magicJack's service? Write a review. You can help other prospective customers make a good decision.
