Magic Jack - We've all heard the saying, 'You get what you pay for,' and it's become increasingly clear that magicJack is no exception. Sure, it appears to be a small, crafty device claiming to change the world of communications for a ridiculously low annual fee, but the reality is you may find yourself down and out after ordering from this company.

Magic Jack

Pros: Low price; easy to install
Cons: Bad quality; intermittent service; unreliable service and hardware

Reviewed by: cschulx (xxx.xxx.252.165)

The lure of low price quickly turns to grief. MagicJack is the next thing to no phone service at all. I bought mine almost a year ago. In the beginning, it seemed like a worthwhile purchase. But then the quality became terrible to the point that it was almost useless. Sometimes I'd want to dial a number but had no dial tone. Other times I'd get a dial tone, but once I'd dialed the number, nothing; just silence. Plus, the fact that every time one dials a number, the annoying window pops up that then must be gotten rid of. On my computer, when MagicJack is installed, I cannot put the computer in Standby. That might just be a quirk of my my computer or Windows XP. I doubt it.

Eventually my MagicJack quit working altogether. Save your money. MagicJack is worthless.

MagicCrap

Reviewed by: caminale (xxx.xxx.127.101)

I bought my MagicJack over a year ago and, yes, I renewed for five years. The device is TOTALLY UNRELIABLE for making calls. So why did I renew? Because I DO like the voicemail and call forwarding features, so for $12/year on the 5 year renewal, I've got a permanent number I can redirect to anywhere in the world. I'm willing to pay $1/month for a permanent, portable, redirectable phone number.

On the other hand, the device itself SUCKS! I've used it on 3 different computers, and all kinds of different internet speeds and i've spent countless hours on their lame chat window tech support with their technicians running me around in circles over the SAME repair protocols that don't fix squat.

My magicjack device takes up to 1.5 hours to load, as long as i keep plugging it in and unplugging it, until it finally loads. Bottom line: IT'S A PIECE OF CRAP.

If you want a permanent, portable, phone number with voicemail that you can redirect around the world, i think magicjack is GREAT, especially for the price. Otherwise, it's junk. If I were running the company, I'd advertise it as just that: a permanent, portable, redirectable number. Use it for that and you'll be delighted.

Magic Jack

Pros: like it all
Cons: none so far

Reviewed by: captdavid (xxx.xxx.48.226)

This is working out very good for me. Voice mail is good and sends a email when I have one. I have canceled my land line service and saving about $45 a month. A friend did some a connection issue but I can live with that as he just waited a few moments and then connected.

Majic Jack has problems

Reviewed by: EddyQ (xxx.xxx.189.172)

I got this Majic Jack about 6 months ago. It used to work fine in two different machines. But it is now malfunctioning in both machines. I suspect the problem is in their firmware updates ... just a guess because I have done several updates and it seems to just get worse. My basic problem is that it will sometimes just dissapare and I have to either unplug/replug it or reboot.

Pros: Cheap! That is the reason I bought Magic Jack. Quality is good. I recommend magic Jack to everyone I know. I have been happy with it.
Cons: Compatibility with phones. Customer service is not very helpful. Not the most dependable means of communication. Drops calls, sometimes will not dial, and you have to reset it.

I have had Magic Jack for 3 months now, I run my Magic-Jack on a Mac, and I have had a couple of problems. For one it is not compatible with the cordless phone that I bought to go with it, which means that I can't see whose calling on the handset. I have had some dropped calls, and I had a problem with the handset not hanging up when I pressed the end button on my handset, which I would then have to go to the computer and hang it up on the softphone, that was very frustrating! Customer service is no help at all. I had already tried the steps they were telling me to do to fix these issues and they were still trying get tell me to try them again. After a couple of magic fixes, and some rebooting the computer all issues have been fixed. I have been overall satisfied with the system. When I purchased Magic Jack I simply plugged it in and it worked fine. I have only had the couple issues with the phone and these issues were fixed rather quickly. It has been dependable and works fine. Sound quality was not great at first, there was a little delay, I used the Magic-Fix and it solved that problem.

Magic Jack

Pros: Cost Ease of Use Convenience Sound Quality (with decent internet connection)
Cons: Self serve

Reviewed by: CraigTPE (xxx.xxx.227.251)

For US$20/year, you can't expect customer service to be available at your finger tips. Get serious. If you want full service, you gotta pay for it.

I have been a Vonage customer for 5 years. Vonage is completely reliable and, assuming your internet connection has adequate bandwidth, the sound quality is crystal clear. Vonage doesn't need the computer as the adapter plugs directly into your modem and is packed with features.

But do I really need all that? Magic Jack is only US$20/year vs Vonage's US$300!! That is a HUGE difference. So what if I need to go through the computer or can't snap my fingers and get someone from customer service?

The installation process took maybe 2 minutes and was completely effortless. Within 2 minutes, I had my number and was up and running. It was MUCH easier, and is much more portable, than Vonage.

The sound quality will depend on your bandwidth. If you have a cheap, low-bandwidth internet connection, then yes, the voice quality will suck. That is the same with ALL VoIP services. I got a slight echo on one call from Taiwan to the US. Big deal.

I'll be testing it out for the next couple weeks before I drop Vonage, but so far, two thumbs up.

Magic Jack Works Great

Reviewed by: sebol99 (xxx.xxx.215.67)

I read a lot of the reviews and all of the bad ones have the same thing in common, dropped calls poor connection. All of these problems have nothing to do with Magic Jack and have everything to do with the quality of the broadband connection in their homes. I got this device in 3 days I plugged it in and it took 2 minutes to set up and I have been using it all weekend even made international calls, Crystal clear and stable. My broadband connections are very strong and my wireless is very stable. If you have poor signal coming into your home via your cable or you have an instable wireless connection your Magic Jack will be unstable. The magic jack is just a device that allows you to connect a phone via voice over IP that’s it. If the service is bad the problem is with your cable service or your wireless network. Even the smallest amount of signal loss not notices while watching TV can cause this. I would have your cable guy out to sure up the signal strength of you broadband service. I did chat with the live customer care regarding administrative questions and they are pretty useless and the web page could use a makeover to be more customer friendly and easier to use to manage your account but I do like the product for me it works great. 911 is no big deal all VOIP servies have this problem in  the power goes out. I always have a cell phone on me and unless you have a corded phone you still cannot use a lan line if the power goes out and you ahve a cordless phone.I like this so much i have ordered another for my family to use at thier house.

The Majic Jack Sucks!  The reliability is approximately 20%  It drops calls, fails to connect most of the time, and the sound quality is aweful!
