I've been using magicJack for about a year and a half. It is true you get what you pay for and I certainly wouldn't rely on magicJack as my primary or only phone. I use the magicJack exclusively for outgoing calls or computer tech support calls using the speakerphone. It helps keep me from exceeding my monthly cell phone account minutes.
I tried out several phones and hookups to get what I consider optimal performance from magicJack, which is just ok. It works most of the time however there are occassional days when it's unusable. I do have a good internet connection and have also used Vonage with this connection with consistent high quality.
Here are some tips to optimize magicJack:
- Use a short good quality phone line, 6' or less. Optionally you can use a mobile phone with the base connected to the short line if you need to get away from your computer.
- In the magicJack software menu set the microphone volume to max. I also use a phone that takes a 9 volt battery which allows me to increase the speaker phone volume on my end.
- Experiment with your USB ports to find the best one. It's not recommended using it through a hub and I found this to be true.
Problems I have encountered are:
- Hissing or crackling in the background, occasionally you hear beeps. Re-establishing the call will usually improve the connection.
- Sometimes you make a call and the other party cannot hear you.
- Some days the darn thing just doesn't work for a while. Restarting the software or rebooting may or may not help.
They don't recommend it for faxing. Messaging has worked well and you have the option to have messages sent to your email which I like. Their website is helpful and answers most questions. I haven't tried calling them but I can imagine, as with most companies these days, it might be difficult to talk to a person.
This is a good deal if you can use an ok secondary phone service that works most of the time.
