Unreliable

Pros: Cheap.
Cons: Poor voice quality. Non existent customer service (No contact phone number). Quality just not consistent.

Reviewed by: Anonymous

About 60% of the time calls are clear and have no problems. Currently calls have hiss noise and some don't connect at all. The internet connection is fine and I am using a Skype phone that connects directly to the router.

Getting the most from Skype

Pros: It is affordable, you can let people know you are not available, have multiple SkypeIn numbers from all over the world.
Cons: No E911 capability, outbound calling has no caller ID, or a strange number appears.

I found a few ways to improve my call quality by eliminating the use of my PC and using either a wifi phone, or a special cordless phone with Skype built into it. This is far more convenient, and the sound is substantially better. I purchased a phone made by Linksys that uses my home phone and Skype together, and prompts me if I want to call using my home phone or SkypeOut. AWESOME! Another option is using a USB phone with Skype in the computer. I purchased one for about $50 that also was a significant sound quality improvement. I also purchased the SMC wifi phone from Skype. That is okay, but it needs a web browser in it to expand some of the wifi connection options (like using airport wifi, etc, that need user agreement confirmation) I have put in my comments into Skype in that regard, asking them to look intently at the Linksys WIP330 wifi phone for Skype certification. This phone could be a great product to use for voip carriers that support wifi phones in multiple areas.

Skype is getting a poor name and quality with folks that I contact. The first thing I have to ask people is, "Can you hear me?" Most of the time it is a negative response. I'm getting really aggravated with the phone system.

I gave Customer Service an average score because I haven't used it. I have had no reason to use it. Everything has worked out great for me with Skype, so far.

Going elsewhere

Reviewed by: Anonymous

Used it for quite a while. Quality is mostly good and free PC-PC calls are great. Now they started to charge connection fees and short calls double or triple in price. There are many much cheaper options. Further their propriety system doesn't allow to interact with other providers. Once you invest deeply you are stuck and have to dance according their whims. Customer service is close to hopeless. I'll switch over for paid calls as soon as my credit is up.
Have a look at wengophone, open, community build and supported. Any commercial provider can link in and provide PC to landline calls so competition will keep the price low.
