I've been chatting with my parents about voip, now that I've got it. They told me they spend about 15-20 dollars minimum for long distance alone. So I suggested they get one of the less expensive services (you can find them on this site, a few of which are Sunrocket, Cordia, and Zingotel) that offer unlimited long distance. I also suggested they keep their traditional phone until voip has earned their trust entirely. Now they will pay less for their overall phone service by a few dollars a month, plus they'll have unlimited long-distance to the US and Canada, less expensive international calls (not that they make that many anyway...but it's nice), voicemail, caller ID, and all that jazz, plus they'll have 2 lines and maybe even an extra number since some providers offer a free extra number. I told them they can't really lose this way, but just make sure they can drop the service easily if need be. In the future, if they decide to drop their traditional line, they can transfer their current number to the voip provider and save the 25-35 dollars they spend now. Hope this all has been helpful.
