Re: What is the Difference between PBX and Micro PBX

Hello Michelle. As far as I know, these are the same thing, except that a Micro PBX is simply a smaller version of a traditional PBX. You can check out this site for an example: http://www.ariavoice.com/page/71 Hope that helps!

Hi, Thank you for the reply. Michelle.

Re: What is the Difference between PBX and Micro PBX

Michelle, there is also something called a Virtual PBX which is a PBX that works using voice over ip but is hosted by a voice over ip provider. Compare this to a traditional PBX which you would normally purchase and have installed in your office and then connect to traditional landlines. Here is a description of how a virtual pbx works, http://www.easyofficephone.com/whatisvpbx.html Here are some other sources which explain how a Virtual PBX works which you might find useful: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_pbx http://www.networkworld.com/columnists/2005/092605dzubeck.html http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1887151,00.asp

Re: What is the Difference between PBX and Micro PBX

Good post, John! Did you know anything about a micro-pbx? Is it just simply a smaller version of a standard pbx?

Re: What is the Difference between PBX and Micro PBX

John, The concept of Virtual PBX is really good. The link sent by you was useful. Tell me which provider has the cheapest pbx or the micro pbx.

Re: What is the Difference between PBX and Micro PBX

Hey Michelle IP PBXs are normally open source, based on Asterisk. There's a real good package real easy to set up called Trixbox, you can easily create a server for your IP PBX that is SIP based. so basically you can use any VoIP Service provider that uses SIP server, such as many in the market with this IP PBX you just created using TrixBox or Asterisk. Hope that helps!

Re: What is the Difference between PBX and Micro PBX

What is SIP-based? And does that mean there are 'other'-based IP PBX's as well?

Re: What is the Difference between PBX and Micro PBX

SIP-based means that the system uses the protocol SIP for the voIP use. There are some providers and softwares/IP PBX that doesn't use the protocol SIP, like skype! The most common protocol for voice over IP is for sure the SIP, but we have lots of others, like: H.323, MGCP, H.248/MEGACO, Jingle, IAX.

Re: What is the Difference between PBX and Micro PBX

SIP is a protocol as I understand it that lets your telephone hardware or software communicate with your voice over ip provider. As an example I have a soft phone (software based telephone with usb headset running on my laptop) that lets me take my extension on my virtual pbx anywhere I go. As long as I used a softphone, digital office telephone etc which is SIP compadible I can use my login and password and take my extension anywhere I want to go. For instance each of us at the office have an AAstra 9133i Office Telephone with 3 lines on it and a soft phone which we put our usernames and passwords for our extensions into. I can then call from that phone using any internet connection or call another employee by dialing their extension (such as 221). There are lots of sip capable devices and softphones on the market.
