I have sunrocket and when I got their service they said I can fax but I found out that you maybe able to fax. They told me to turn my fax to lowest setting and it must be g3 compatable, and also put a dsl filter inline. I did all that and it still didn't work. What I found out is that the Voip service must have a dedicated line for faxes only to have a reliable fax service.
You need a dedicated VOIP fax line so you can recalibrate your adaptor for that line - strictly for fax.
Yes, it does help to turn your Baud rate down to 9600 Baud (some HP ink jets will do this) and turn "Automatic Error Correction" off.
However, if your adaptor is calibrated for fax only, you should be fine without changing your Baud rate and you can leave AEC on.

The biggest thing you want to look for in a fax line is usage of the T.38 ITU standard. It is designed for sending faxes over IP networks. And if your voip line is setup to send faxes, you can still use it for voice.
