VoIP on PSP and Nintendo DS

VoIP isn’t all fun and games, or is it?

VoIP internet phone service isn’t just for talking anymore. Game companies are leveraging VoIP technology for geek entertainment on their portable game devices the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP.

Nintendo seems to be the current leader in game hardware. The Wii impressed businesses and gamers alike but the recent release of the VoIP enabled microphone/headphone set for the Nintendo DS keeps them wanting more. Nintendo DS also made news with the recent release of Midway’s classic arcade title, Gauntlet. The VoIP capable Nintendo DS game will feature online play and VoIP chat.

The other big dog, SONY now offers portable voice and video chat via VoIP technology on the PSP. Go!Messenger offers Skype functionality and a nice slim new look. Go!Messenger lets you:

• Make voice calls to other PSP users
• Video chat with friends
• Video Messaging
• Instant Messaging

Using Skype on a PSP allows users to make free calls to anyone using their service on a PSP or other portable devices a PC, Pocket PC or Mac internationally within range of a WiFi signal.
Additionally Skype and other VoIP providers offer great rates for landline calls as well as mobile phone service.

VoIP Provider Spotlight: Expert Technology Associates

Today's featured VoIP provider is Expert Technology Associates. They've recently unveiled a new service called Email PoweredUP!™. The following passage is from their website:

"Over 75% of all businesses will experience a major, non-disaster related email outage every year.

We also help safeguard your assets with best-of-breed spam filtering and virus protection - all for about the same or less than the cost of spam filtering alone!

At ETA, we take our commitment to keeping your Email PoweredUp!™ very seriously. That's why we proactively communicate any outages to you and provide a helping hand to get you back up and running as soon as possible. VoIP and the Apple iPhone

Along with the release of their new 3G iPhone, Apple has also released the iPhone 2.0 Software Update. The update, which will work on the original EDGE iPhone as well as the new 3G iPhone, allows iPhone owners to download and install third party applications on their iPhone from the new iTunes App Store.

The iPhone 2.0 Software Update enables users to install a wide-range of applications on their iPhones including games and programs such as eBay, PayPal, Yellow Pages, facebook, and MySpace. However, this new update also has implications in the VoIP arena. Companies are beginning to develop applications for the iPhone that allow users to make calls via VoIP whenever they have access to a WiFi connection for a low fee.

VoIP over WiFi has long been available on RIM's BlackBerry, but is only now being introduced to the iPhone. These applications (i.e. TruPhone) can be downloaded from the iTunes store, and for a low per-minute rate, users can make any call, even long distance, from a WiFi hot spot.

T-Mobile Unveils Residential VoIP Phone Service

Mobile telephone service giant, T-Mobile, has landed on the VoIP telephone scene. As of today, the company plans to offer VoIP telephone service for residential users at a price of only $10 per month. The catch, however, is that you must be a T-Mobile cell service customer in order to be eligible for T-Mobile@Home digital phone VoIP service. On the surface, T-Mobile offering VoIP service at such a low price seems like a steal, but if you were to end up subscribing to their digital phone service, you would end up shelling out more cash than you originally thought.
