Good Quality, Poor Customer Service
Gene says: I've been with 1Thouchtone.com for several months. From the beginning, the service worked without any problems. The quality was decent though not sterling until I discovered the bandwidth settings on their website. Changing from High Quality to Low actually improved the call quality and significantly reduced the bandwidth needed. My guess here is that High Quality needs more bandwidth than I had available.
I travel extensively, both domestically and internationally and brought the ATA on several trips. It worked great virtually everywhere though its presence (and the additional telephone) did raise a few eyebrows at the hotels. The supplied Motorola ATA has an auto-volt power supply and works on any voltage from 100 - 240 and 50Hz or 60Hz so international use is childs play. (You'll need an adapter for the plug though most hotels have a few to loan out for free. If you decide to buy one, the shops in the European airports have better quality ones than the junk you'll find in most US airport shops.)
However, their customer service and support leaves something to be desired. The ATA died about 5 days ago and it has been a major hassle dealing with their support folks. The toll free number on the website prompts you to leave a message and wait for a callback. Submitting a ticket on-line is pretty easy and they did respond to the first request by e-mail fairly quicly. But, after that, it was a major hassle dealing with half a dozen support techs getting them to agree that the ATA had failed. It was pulling the code from their system, but was quite totally dead on the inside interface. No dial tone, no sync, no DHCP from the embedded server, and no internet access on the PC port. They blamed it on my firewall, then on my ISP, my cabling, etc. for 5 days until agreeing to send out a new ATA. I'm waiting on that now and will re-post once the system is back up and running.
They're not the cheapest, but are one of very few providers that offer a local number in my area (Joplin, MO) and that was a significant consideration in my initial choice. If they can improve their customer support response times or offer a BYOD option they'd be an excellent choice.
